Maytag French Door Fridge w/o Ice/Water in door -Anybody own it?

I'm looking at the Stainless Maytag 24.8 cu. ft. french door fridge with no ice and water - just ice maker in the bottom freezer. Model MFF2558VEM

It's sale priced for $999 at Sears and seems like a great deal - I don't want the ice and water in the door taking up space and eventually breaking - and it seems like a great value on a great looking french door fridge.

Questions -

1. Noise - have come across some online comments about it running loudly and constantly?

2. Quality - is this a Maytag built by Maytag - or is built by Whirlpool? Seems to be made in USA which I like.

3. No LED's or fancy features - but has nice storage space and shelving - again nothing fancy - with that deli drawer that I like - any issues here? I just don't know why I'd pay $500 or $1000 more for some bells and whistles (this is like getting my dw for free).

4. Flappy Seal on one door and door not closing easily - has anyone had problems with this?

5. ice maker in freezer with just a basket for freezer drawer - so ice can fall down through wire into bottom of freezer compartment? Can I get a solid bottomed insert for the wire pull out basket to catch any ice that falls?

We have a Maytag Performa single door that is now our basement fridge since we remodeled & put in a KA counter depth French Door in the kitchen. Obviously, I don't have the direct experience you are looking for a recent Maytag FD, but I might be able to comment on several of your questions since both are now made by the same American company. Our Maytag is probably 7 years old & may have been manufactured prior to Whirlpool purchasing, thus some of my experience may not apply. The price seems great for a French Door fridge so if you don't need the bells & whistles this might be just the one for you.

My experience with French Door is that the closing & sealing is hard to get used to. I do not think it is elegant on any brand. I still check our KA periodically, but I think it is FD, not the Maytag. The next time you are in a showroom open & close several of the FD refrigerators. You may have the same experience with all of them.

We did have ice fall to the bottom of the Maytag because of the baskets, but I don't remember it being a problem -- sometimes the ice evaporates or shrinks in size before you know it is there. We fill our freezers quite full & often have small items pop over the baskets/containers. I felt the Maytag was easier to retreive items from under the basket than the KA is. My memory of ice for the Maytag was that the ice container was HUGE giving us more ice than we required. I used some other smaller container & had plenty of ice & more freezer space.

I cannot remember it being particularly noisy, but our floorplan is not an open one. One issue I did have is since it wasn't digital (but didn't understand until I got a digital one) is veggies would freeze when we traveled. I ultimately would turn the temp up a few degrees to accomodate for the door not being opened during our absence.

In all my refrigerators I have to work with the shelf arrangement to assure air is flowing properly. It seems initially I invariably have air blocked & freeze a few items until I can rearrange the shelves to make sure I'm not concentrating air in any one place.

I love it when I can save enough on one applicance to justify (or purchase) another one. I say "go for it!". It sounds like your expecations will be met. Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed input. It does seem like a decent buy for a stylish functional fridge. I hope it doesn't run loudly and constantly.

Before buying the F&P, see my post about the noise issue I had to solve. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/appl/msg1000065218970.html If you buy F&P, be very careful when installing and moving it as the decorative stainless steel doors can dent very easily - they are paper thin. I got the model without ice or water dispenser for same reasons as mentioned above, but also I do not like drinking water that has been contained in plastic for health reasons. I did not like the french door design because it made little sense on such a small fridge and took up valuable space. I have to say the bottom freezer compartments are very nice and works well. I love the ice tray! The fridge takes some getting used to because it is less deep than a 30 inch - but we no longer come across the odd 4 week old mummified food item that got pushed waaaay back there! For extra space, we removed the wine rack, but left in all the shelves which means a reduced shelf height. The reduced shelf height means we have to repackage a few things for a better fit, but it works well after we got used to it. One more thing, I find the crispers are very good and hold a lot compared to our old fridge. My only real complaint had to do with the constant compressor noise, but thankfully I was able to resolve it.

I have the LG four-door fridge. I love it. The crisper drawers in the fridge pull out all the way, so there's no problem getting stuff out of the back. I find the two freezer drawers to be very convenient and surprisingly spacious (especially after my small, craptastic Kenmore side-by-side). FYI, mine has the ice and water on the door (although LG makes a version without this). I must admit it's very practical. That said, I prefer the clean look of a dispenser-free door. But the dispensers give kids (and husbands!) an easy way to get water and ice without having to use their grubby meathooks to paw through a bin of ice!

I totally disagree. Unless you buy a refrigerator for under a thousand dollars, an extended warranty, which covers the whole unit minus the incidentals you mention, is very much worth the piece of mind. Buy anything cheaper and you should be going into the purchase thinking it's disposable anyway. The Maytag man, lol. I wonder how many people were actually influenced by that advertising? I don't feel that the manufacturers reputation regarding mean time between failures of the appliance should come into play when considering the extended warranty. It should come into play well BEFORE you plunk down your good money in the first place. Buy good appliances, like you did, then protect them. What should come into mind when deciding to purchase an extended warranty is the ratio between what you paid for the appliance and what the warranty costs. In other words, is the unit disposable? Additionally, you need to consider how much a typical repair for that specific appliance could cost, how long the model has been in production and how many things can break down. I know readers in these forums grumble when you use a car analogy, but even the best car manufacturers take a few years to iron out bugs in new models. The same holds true for appliances. If you decide to go with a warranty, contact Maytag first. You'll probably get a better deal through them and it makes things easier if you do need a repair. The third party warranty company must go through them anyway. You might even be able to get a full replacement warranty. If you do go through that insurance company, make sure they don't have complaints against them. BTW, thats a nice refrigerator.
