Need fridge w/O water/ice dispenser-CD or (30'

I need a fridge that is less than 30" deep (can add an inch or two for handles if necessary-Max 33") but I'd rather not have the ice/water dispenser take up so much space. Is FD better than SS? Is there one brand that's more reliable than others? I access my freezer a LOT and many FD models seem so inconvenient. Input, please?

I just ordered the Electrolux CD FD with no ice or water dispenser in the door. The refrigerator shelves were deeper than most so it looked like there was plenty of room. It does have an icemaker in the freezer section.

After living with the french door fridge at a condo at the beach for the week, I actually much prefer the bottom freezer to the side by side freezer. I did not, however, like the french door fridge at all! I felt like I was constantly opening one door and then the other to find things . . . and with a husband and three kids constantly in the fridge, nothing was ever where I put it. If I had to open one door, it would have been much better!

Also LG has a 30" wide one, but it's a little deeper than your specs. (check the air clearances for the samsung--they may push it out beyond what you want)

Many thanks to all those who weighed in on our frenzied fridge search! We've narrowed it down to the GE side by side and the CD FD Kitchenaid. Jenn-Air seems to have a model that looks virtually identical, with the exception of 'professional handles'. It's a few hundred dollars more, which may mean that we're destined to remain amateurs! The problem as Kayl said, is the 30'' depth, which is deeper than we would have liked. We're wondering if it could be recessed into the void in the wall behind, or if that would interfere with heat exchange. I talked to customer service, but we all know how productive that was! If you decide on the water/ice on the refrigerator please make sure your installer uses a metal braided hose to connect the water lines. We have had the very unfortunate experience of the plastic tube fail twice in just over a year. A year ago in our last house we pulled the fridge out for cleaning and when we pushed it back in the plastic line pinched causing tiny small leaks that took over two weeks to discover since no water pooled in front of the fridge. We had no idea until the ceiling in the room below was suddenly bulging and pouring out water onto the carpet. In the end it ruined all the hardwood in the kitchen as it leaked underneath and spread on the subfloor, cabinets had to pulled out and the room down below had to almost completely redone including carpet, ceilings, drywall, paint....... We were trying to sell and had to refuse showings for 6-8 week while it was being repaired. What a mess! And then just last night the plastic tube on our new fridge of not even 3 months ripped off the clamp spraying water everywhere at 1:30 am thank goodness I heard the noise. The water was only spraying for about 25 seconds by the time I turned it off screaming at my poor sleeping son to grab towels. In that short time before we could wipe up the water it had leaked through the floor onto the ceiling below and came out my son's bedroom light fixture. We are really hoping not too much damage has been done this time as we would hate to have another brand new home torn apart again. :( Other than that we use the water/ice all the time it's just the water lines that are our concern.

"My appliance repairman told me he only buys Kenmore because while the appliances are manufactured by other companies, they are manufactured for Sears without known issues. He said that most appliance manufacturers just keep making appliances with known defects but Sears demands they redesign before they sell it as Kenmore." I'm sorry, but I have to call nonsense on that. Sears does make changes in specification from the manufacturer-badged version of an appliance. But sometimes it's just features, like glass shelves at a lower price point on a refrigerator, or a slightly higher spin speed on a washing machine. And sometimes it's mechanical. While it's not completely analogous to kitchen appliances, we bought a Kenmore water softener that was made by Ecowater. It was DOA as of the first regeneration so we had Sears take it back. Because Sears refused to stand behind their warranty, we bought an actual Ecowater to replace it. Turns out the differences between the Kenmore and Ecowater versions were plastic gears (brass on the Ecowater) and thinner cabinet walls on the Kenmore. Sears these days can barely keep itself in business. If they really could identify which appliance features were going to go bad in the space of a few years, they probably ought to just get out of retail and become QA advisors to Whirlpool, Electrolux, Haier, LG, and Samsung.

Athensmomof3, do you think a regular fridge with a bottom freezer is a better idea than the french door setup? I haven't seen too many of them in the stores?

That would be preferable to me, but it may just be me! French door fridges are very popular. We were at my parents condo and the french door was necessary because it is a small kitchen and there would not be enough room to open a large fridge door so the choice was side by side or french door.

I might ask around to see what those who have them think . . . I only lived with it a week so it might be something you would get used to. However, I saw my mom do the same thing multiple times (open one door and then another) . . . it is a second home but they are there often and she still wasn't used to it.

we're getting the F&P - ice makers break and also take up freezer space. I'm putting in hot & cold filtered water in the sink. Also, the F&P has wonderful drawers in the freezer easier to reach and organize everything.

I SO agree, Learningguru! I use my freezer a LOT and don't want it taken up with a dispenser. I haven't seen the F&P and the link didn't work. Could you link again, please?

If you buy F&P, be very careful when installing and moving it as the decorative stainless steel doors can dent very easily - they are paper thin.

I got the model without ice or water dispenser for same reasons as mentioned above, but also I do not like drinking water that has been contained in plastic for health reasons.

I did not like the french door design because it made little sense on such a small fridge and took up valuable space.

I have to say the bottom freezer compartments are very nice and works well. I love the ice tray!

The fridge takes some getting used to because it is less deep than a 30 inch - but we no longer come across the odd 4 week old mummified food item that got pushed waaaay back there!

For extra space, we removed the wine rack, but left in all the shelves which means a reduced shelf height. The reduced shelf height means we have to repackage a few things for a better fit, but it works well after we got used to it.

One more thing, I find the crispers are very good and hold a lot compared to our old fridge.

My only real complaint had to do with the constant compressor noise, but thankfully I was able to resolve it.

Look for places that sell higher end refrigerators, they'll probably have the F&P for viewing (and other machines that may suit you even better). You can also call up F&P and ask if anyone nearby carries the brand (go to their website for toll free contact number).
