Anyone have a CD fridge w/o water and ice maker?

We're downsizing to a counter-depth refrigerator, either a side by side or French door configuration for a narrow galley kitchen. The hitch is that we'd rather not have an ice maker/water dispenser. It seems to be an item that constantly breaks down, and we're also trying to maximize what little interior space we'll have left (fridge can only be 36''W).

Does anyone know of any brand or model of split door, CD refrigerator, that offers the option of NO in-door water and ice? If we have to, an internal dispenser would be preferable to one in the front of the door.

We have located one GE SxS model that would fit the bill, but have already had a nasty GE fridge experience, and would like to have some choice.

I know you said no GE, but I have a GE CD FD no water, no ice in the door for the last 2.5 years, and I like it very much. Quiet, nice to use, & easy to keep clean. My previous GE was 45 years old, w/ nary a problem. I just decided I needed something bigger.

We have the 72" Kitchenaid FD CD fridge. We love it. I have the internal water dispenser; the ice maker is in the freezer drawer. I have no issues filling a water bottle, or anything else. Just have to position it correctly.

"My appliance repairman told me he only buys Kenmore because while the appliances are manufactured by other companies, they are manufactured for Sears without known issues. He said that most appliance manufacturers just keep making appliances with known defects but Sears demands they redesign before they sell it as Kenmore." I'm sorry, but I have to call nonsense on that. Sears does make changes in specification from the manufacturer-badged version of an appliance. But sometimes it's just features, like glass shelves at a lower price point on a refrigerator, or a slightly higher spin speed on a washing machine. And sometimes it's mechanical. While it's not completely analogous to kitchen appliances, we bought a Kenmore water softener that was made by Ecowater. It was DOA as of the first regeneration so we had Sears take it back. Because Sears refused to stand behind their warranty, we bought an actual Ecowater to replace it. Turns out the differences between the Kenmore and Ecowater versions were plastic gears (brass on the Ecowater) and thinner cabinet walls on the Kenmore. Sears these days can barely keep itself in business. If they really could identify which appliance features were going to go bad in the space of a few years, they probably ought to just get out of retail and become QA advisors to Whirlpool, Electrolux, Haier, LG, and Samsung.

Thanks everyone. This is helpful. I don't need the ice maker either and would remove it to have extra freeze space. FWIW, last Fri I spoke to an appliance repair guy about which appliance brands are most reliable. He said to steer away from LG and Samsung, since it's hard to get parts and few people repair them. GE parts are $$$. So he recommends Whirlpool and Frigidaire (and their related brands, like KitchenAid). He thought Bosch dishwashers were good but I didn't think to ask about a Bosch fridge. FWIW, he said on fridges, about 45% of his repair calls are for broken ice-makers and/or water dispensers, either they don't work or are leaking. (but on installation, you can choose to not connect the water line). His general advice to get a big dumb box that does the basics reliably. The bells and whistles may seem nice, but they often break.

Regarding longevity, our last fridge, a Whirlpool, was 18 years old... and we are giving it away as it's still very nice and running perfectly. The ice maker had a couple minor repairs, and never once did anything leak. Fridge before that was also reasonably priced, and when I sold the home I sold it with the house, also older model, ice maker never broke, still in working order. However, it should be noted these were older models, therefore manufactured back when quality control was better, IMO. I honestly can't speak to that now. It does concern me, though. I replaced 18 year old still working perfectly washer and dryer set with a new set a few months ago, and bought an extended warranty (something I never did before, and never needed). Hope we won't need it. This time around we purchased a Sub Zero to replace our Whirlpool - wanted a much larger fridge, and built-in. FWIW, it was not remotely $20,000. We purchased it for the 2 condensers, the reputation, and the fact it's simply a nicer fridge as regards what is inside. We are an older couple, with savings for retirement, and the fridge was affordable to us, albeit I would never consider it inexpensive.

GE's CD is the deepest one I looked at (31"?) My KA is 28". The internal water reservoir takes up very little space, but it does have a ice-maker. I originally was looking at an AMANA, but it didn't have the factory installed ice maker or internal water. You might want to check them out. I was looking for single door/bottom mount, but since FD are so popular I'm sure they would have that too!

FYI, as I mention above bring your tape measure. Some CD's are deeper than others and none are exactly counter depth.

Many thanks to all those who weighed in on our frenzied fridge search!

We've narrowed it down to the GE side by side and the CD FD Kitchenaid. Jenn-Air seems to have a model that looks virtually identical, with the exception of 'professional handles'. It's a few hundred dollars more, which may mean that we're destined to remain amateurs!

The problem as Kayl said, is the 30'' depth, which is deeper than we would have liked. We're wondering if it could be recessed into the void in the wall behind, or if that would interfere with heat exchange. I talked to customer service, but we all know how productive that was!

I'm pretty sure the specs tell you what clearances need to be and they are minimal on the ones I've seen. Not sure that will be the problem with recessing it - more likely it will be the door thickness. Unless you leave fairly wide clearances on the sides, the door must not be recessed or it will not open properly. Maybe someone out there who has actually done this can comment.
