Will I be better off with these speeds?

I'm having a customer service nightmare with my broadband provider. I ran a speed test the other day that showed 5315Kb for download and 361Kb for upload.

Centurylink (previously Embarq) says they have a download speed of 10Mb and an upload speed of 896Mb. I think that sounds better. Will I be better off and is there something they're not telling me? I should probably re-phrase that and say are there any other questions I should be asking. :)

Are you getting rid of cable and getting DSL? If the current service is working properly and the "nightmare" is just a billing problem or similar, IMHO that alone is not a really good reason to switch. Everybody wants faster speeds, but DSL is a little more techy to deal with than cable (I know-I have DSL). Unless you have a really good signal-to-noise ratio and attenuation, 10 Mb is stretching the rubber band a little too tight for my comfort. If your SNR-Atten margins aren't stable (are you in an older house?) you may need some rewiring done and that could cost time-$. Try to get a telco service man to test your margins at your telephone box before you make the switch. Might save some headaches later.

If you only use the Internet for surfing and aren't uploading and downloading huge files regularly, the difference in your experience may be modest, since both 5.3 MB and 10 MB are pretty darn fast. It's like saying you can tell me the difference between 1/10 of a second and 2/10 of a second. Yes one is twice as fast, but not significant. Also, is this cable or DSL? DSL speeds are typically fixed speeds while cable speeds can slow down depending on how many other folks in your neighborhood are online with this company at the same time.

It depends... on the variety and the condition of the plants. My experience is that most HTs have x number of winters in them. Fall planting makes that x-1. It's usually a small enough number that subtracting 1 matters. I used to feel this way too, until I learned through trial & error exactly how deep to plant the roses. For me, it was visually about 2 inches under, then you have the plant settling (we did at the old house, not as much here). By the time it was covered with mulch, it was a few inches under. My roses ended up own rooting. It took about 3 years for every rose, they would die down, end up with 2 canes sometimes but year 3 they took off. I haven't lost a rose in years. I have a very small garden and would like to get it up and running by early summer. Question is...am i better off buying mature potted plants and heeling (sp?) them in or am i better off getting them in the spring? Also, if i do heel them in is it just a matter of digging a hole that will contain the pot? You're in zone 5, I was in zone 6. We had mild winters the last 2 years while mine were in pots (dug them out to sell the house). What I did was put them along the back fence in the corner or between our 2 sheds. In the back and along the sides plus the ground, I took hay and made a blanket out of it. I then added the roses, adding more hay between them. We then added some to the top. I then lined it with perennials. Worked pretty well. I lost a few in the end but it wasn't over the winter, it was after between spring & summer but mine were in pots for 2 winters. If you do find bargains it might be worth it. You could do a combination of what I did but put them in the ground on their side or at an angle, then insulate with straw.

I'm not convinced its all that easy especially the first time around. It's not a natural first reaction unless you've had previous experience and/or trained yourself and maybe ran thru a practice session. My first go: We bot a '70 Chev new and installed an after market cruise control, I think that's all that was available then. Well one day a couple years later on an Arizona freeway it hung up. I don't know why anymore or who was driving my wife or me but the scenario was: First) shoved selector into neutral Second) slowed down and pulled off the road Third) after a slight hesitation turned off the key Why the hesitation? I dunno - maybe it was just reaction time but it wasn't instantaneous and for sure was not first.

I will give you my take. I also plan on integrating in controls for my lights, music and possibly a light show with light o rama controlling my backyard flowerbed lights, yes I am one of those over the top synchronized music and lights Christmas display guys, so I totally follow your line of thinking, it makes my OCD's kick in just thinking about how much I have been contemplating about this stuff! I finally chose almost all Jandy for my pool equipment (with the exception of my beast raypak heater and color logic lights). I am running the largest aqualink RS as it seemed to have all the expandability and functions I wanted. I am also running the aquapure 1400 swg. The only part of my pool that is different is that I chose the color logic 4.0 LED lights for pool and spa. The great thing is the new aqualink systems support Jandy lights, SAM, and best of all for me, color logic 3.0 and higher. It actually has the menu choices in the PDA (pool digital assistant I think, I call it the big blue remote.) controller that correspond to the correct light shows built in to the color logic lights, so it can control them as intended by color logic, just pick the color or show and hit go! With some other controllers the only way to cycle through the shows is to power cycle the light over and over manually. The aqualink PDA also has support for multispeed pumps, you can even set a percentage of power to be used in the PDA itself. The aqualink also has extra aux slots that can be user assigned for the extra things we want to do. I really like that every facet of my pool can be controlled/monitored from the PDA or the control panel of the aqualink. Sorry if long winded, I only really looked at the Jandy equipment as I have a friend in the business who really convinced me the stuff is really good, especially since they have upgraded the speed of the PDA.

livvibabiexo, We used Kraftmaid Canvas color cabinets throughout the house. In our kitchen, with our lighting, it comes across as warm white, which is what I was going for. Note: We had tons of problems with Kraftmaid shipping and lots of damaged merchandise that had to be reordered (and we are still dealing with this since last March!). I hope your experience will be be much better than ours. Good Luck!

I have had dsl, fios and now cable. I would not go back to dsl. LOVED fios, and so far the cable has been very good.

As stated if you do not move a lot of huge files like movies and stuff then you should be fine with the speed you have if indeed that speed is fairly consistent.
Since we do not know what kind of problems you are having hard to say much more.
Also how much price difference will there be? any problems getting out of a contract? pay for equipment? etc

Thanks everyone. The problems I'm having are unreliable connections. Since Time-Warner sold more rural areas to Windjammer a few months ago I've had to call 5 times in six weeks for outages and no connections. They finally decided I needed a new modem on Sunday but yesterday and today were both "no shows" with the technician. "I don't know what happened, but there is no tech today".

I think I've decided to switch over to a bundled package through CenturyLink (was Embarq). There are no other options for me...Suddenlink doesn't serve my address. I use the internet to connect long distance for my work and can't afford not to have a reliable connection.
