How to post photos revised 10/19/11

I'm posting a link to an FAQ on the New England Gardening Forum since the Building a Home forum does not yet have an FAQ page, and the question of how to post photos keeps arising. This is meant as a stopgap post to fill a present need.

The FAQ is excerpted from a series of threads where various forum members contributed valuable information and commentary. The threads got heavy with discussion, all of it useful but maybe hard to wade through if you just want to get a photo included in your post and don't really want to know the nitty-gritty. I'll give the SHORT and the LONG of it so you can take what you want and ignore the rest.

THE REALLY REALLY SHORT OF IT:

1. Get the photo onto your computer desktop, by digital camera or scanning or whatever.

2. Upload the photo to a web-hosting site; either by opening an account (Picasa, Photobucket, etc.) or by using a site that doesn't require an account (such as TinyPic or imgur). Pick a reasonable size for posting like 640 X 480 pixels.

3. From the list of codes on the website, pick the HTML code and copy it. DO NOT copy the IMG code. It won't work on GW.

4. Paste the HTML code into your message.

5. Preview should show the photo included in your post.

Or, if you have the direct link that starts with http: and ends with .jpg, you can just stick in the tags. You would do as above as far as uploading and choosing the size, but some programs include a lot of nonsense in their html code for you to copy, so I prefer to do it this way.

You would type in what is in red. The black is the direct link you would paste in and finish with the red tags.

Good note, aa62579. That's also a good method for just picking a photo (or other graphic) off of another site and linking to it; it doesn't have to be on a photo web-hosting site. I sometimes post a link to a weather map that will update automatically. It's useful during hurricane season or any time.

I posted this on Wednesday, October 19, 2011. It should update tomorrow.

That ratio illustrates that, on average, plants use 1.5 parts of P and 7 parts of K for every 10 parts of N. The actual amounts of P and K that fertilizers supply are not what it says on the box. 10-10-10, for instance, is actually 10-4.3-8.3 after the factoring is done to account for the fact that P is reported as P2O5 (phosphorous pentoxide) and K is reported as K2O (potassium oxide). That's the background ...... what's important is, after the factoring is done for 3:1:2 ratio fertilizers, you'll find that they supply actual amounts of NPK in a ratio almost exactly that of the average ratio of nutrients plants use. 18-6-12 would be exactly a 3:1:2 ratio, so your CRF is pretty spot on in that regard. The only drawback to using it is, you relinquish control of when nutrients are supplied to your plants. I didn't mention this on the last thread because I thought it would have been too technical. When talking about 'size' of a digital photo, it can refer to two separate, though often related things. The physical size of the picture on the screen, and the file size of the information necessary to show the photo. Physically large pictures mess up the thread formatting. Large file sizes are the ones that take forever to download. So these two photos have the same file size, just the html commands determing photo size are different. The first is 240 px, the second is 1000. You can start to see some fuzziness in the second picture where there really isn't enough information.

I caught most of it (after being in the ER with DD from 1pm to 8pm last night). I didn't realize the technique of terracing utilized to minimize soil erosion, that was employed during the Dust Bowl era. Also, the dust storms, particularly the one that dumped 3 feet of dust - can you imagine? The lady that told the "joke" about a fella finding the farmer's hat on top of the dust, picking it up and finding the farmer underneath buried in the dust, and the buried farmer then commenting that it wasn't as bad for him as the horse he was atop! She said humor was one way they dealt with the issues. The migrant farmers from Oklahoma - Okies, then a derrogatory term - well, that's another story about the conditions they lived thru. Not much better than the Dust Bowl they left behind to forge a new life. Okies were certainly relegated to a minimum societal status in those times in that region, too. Living conditions, if you can call them "living" conditions in which they had to survive, were pitiful, meager, and extremely hostile. I was painfully close to tears watching the program, and yet, drawn to it at the same time. Can you relate? Maybe it takes getting older to really be able to sympathize and struggle psychologically with these times that our relatives endured. But, endure they did, and were much stronger for it. I cannot question the heart of an Okie after seeing this documentary, the photos, hearing the stories from people who actually lived it. It leaves me feeling humbled by the people of Oklahoma, who I don't think I really, truly appreciated until I saw it in the eyes, frail frames, quivering voices, and the indisbutable, hard-boiled narrative of the images of the thrashing storms they suffered. We had a few dust storms back in the 80s when I lived in Norman. Dust storms are not like thunder storms. Rain doesn't get inside and coat your nose and throat with grit. The severity of the storms astounded me and shook me like I was a dirty old rag being manhandled by a hound. I just cannot convey how profound an experience it was to sit and watch this documentary that just seemed to literally jump out of the tv at me. Love seeing this photo! I had the chance to meet at least 6 in the area of Richmond and Williamsburg Virginia a few years back before leaving Yorktown to move back to Florida for retirement. I LOVED seeing the 'surreal' GIRLS IRL! They were exactly as I thought they were! And we were like strangers who already KNEW a lot of us... hearing 'This is like what you have in your house, MR...' was like... 'this stranger I am with has seen my house'!!! LOL how FUN..because we ALL shared a common interest! And even after I moved away from them, we are all still close friends on FB and by email... we still share ideas.... I will soon be searching out people in Central to South Florida area, I have already met some on FB. DID we EVER think that our days of being on decorating boards could turn into life-long friendships? LOVE stories like this and the photos!!! Thanks so much for sharing!

Also, if you set up an account at a web-hosting site like Photobucket, make sure the account you link to is public. A private account requires a password to view, and your link won't work. The private account is fine for people you want to give your password to.

This forum really moves fast. In my last post I should have said "public album", not "public account", for photos you can link to in a public forum.

I don't think you need to have stuff public. I no longer use photobucket much, but I kept much of my stuff private on there any never had any trouble posting an individual picture.

This is a private album. I can still link to specific photos in the album, but you cannot see any other photos in the album without knowing the exact address.

What I said would be true if you wanted to share an image from a private album.

If you were trying to share the entire album, I do believe you would need to make it public or share the password.

That's good to know. I've never used Photobucket myself so I'm going by the frequent posts where someone's link is invalid because the album is private. When they make it public the link works.

So what you're saying is that the link must be to a specific photo URL, not the album the photo is in. As long as the link is to one photo at a time, it doesn't matter if the actual album is private or public.
