how do I figure out which IP address?

I am in charge of running our security camera/download video if there is an incident (theft/vandalism) in our complex. I have to go through HOURS of searching to get data from various cameras. The office is not very comforable for me, so I would like to at least do the searching from home. I know I can watch at home from my computer if I enter in the IP addresses (or something), but I don't know which numbers/what to do to watch from home. I called the company who our equipment is with and they said they don't know, and to call the server. I called the server (Time Warner), and they said they didn't know. I seem to get the 'I don't know-call the other guy' from everyone.

If you can find the recorded video files, maybe try right clicking the filename.mp4 ? and select properties. You might be able to copy and paste the file address.. Then use the folder address to see whats in the folder(s)

Its possible it uploads to an ftp account ? So you might find it easier to access the folder and see file dates and times with an ftp program like FileZilla . If that is how your system works.. So many different ways they can save files, .. so im just guessing,,, its hard to be specific.

is there someone there that can just tell you by phone or email the current IP address there?

One easy way to get your IP address that is easy for most people to remember is go to
www.ipchicken.com

or they can get it by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.

Under Connection, click View status.
Click Details.
Your computer's IP address appears in the Value column, next to "IPV4 IP Address."

I agree about Ventilation 101. As yourself, I've had to education myself on these matters, but unlike you, I can stare up my range hood vent, measure and picture. Any way, a squirrel cage is a type of cage in which my roof centrifugal fan/motor ensemble sits. I'm not sure of the word's origin but it resembles a squirrel's tail in shape, so perhaps it is that simple. From Wikipedia: "A centrifugal fan (not to be confused with blowers) is a mechanical device for moving air or other gases with a very low increase in pressure. These fans increase the speed of air stream with the rotating impellers.[1] They use the kinetic energy of the impellers or the rotating blade to increase the pressure of the air/gas stream which in turn moves them against the resistance caused by ducts, dampers and other components." "Centrifugal fan is a constant CFM device or a constant volume device, meaning that, at a constant fan speed, a centrifugal fan will pump a constant volume of air rather than a constant mass. One thought I have is do you need more than one fan to increase your cfm venting. Still, there is no doubt the 6" duct is a rate limiting step, as is the height away from your range. If you could do away with the hood insert vent type, and custom make or find a inverted T type vent hood with enough pipe length from your 9" ceiling to 30" above your range and which accommodates your duct(s) (6" or 8") with some fiddling, you may reach a happier compromise to allow you the range type you wish. I think I saw you mention a BS or CC. Very nice. Glad your getting some additional input. Remember to address make up air (MUA) at some point and cfm. It's a smart idea to consider the basics. Startup programs vary by manufacturer and platform. All very subjective at times also. I can run a Hijack This and chop all manner of "seemingly" unnecessary startups out of a system and have it perform really well, only to have a callback about "such-and-such" that isn't there any more. Laptops especially can have a lot of things running that may not appear on a desktop simply due to the nature of the hardware. Of course those very same machines can have a boatload of trialware included in the image, as say, the Sony Vaios did. It is a matter of first understanding the scan from a utility like Hijack This and then actioning according to YOUR expectations. I guess that's why there are forums such as this!

Hi, Mikie. Thanks. I guess I will look for a 1.5TB drive (unless I don't find any with very good reviews - I know I've seen some 1 TB drives that get great reviews for around $100). I know I have one open sata port (I did have my computer open last week to take my Tivo original hard drive and copy it to a new 1TB hard drive - with all the snafus this 1- 1/2 hr. project took 8 hours on Saturday - and on and off all Sunday to complete). There is definitely a bay for a second hard drive. I had 2 sata ports but just added an esata cable so I'm using one of those now. I definitely don't have such huge files (maybe 10-15GB at most for a long high-def movie), so I'll look into partitioning the drive (which is an intimidating idea now, but I'll work up to it). I'm not sure what you mean by break-away covers. But this computer comes with an empty slot in front where a firewire port can be. I think this is what you mean by does the faceplate have provisions for it. I've looked through Dell forums. I'm copying the link here: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/18748278.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=04&s=bsd&PageIndex=1 It's amazing that for over a year folks have been trying to add this front firewire port after the face - and most of them cannot get a straight answer from Dell. The variety of responses - including it can't be done, it can only be added to the rear, a suggestion of different needed parts - and then perhaps one answer that seems right - but they got the part number wrong and it took the woman 30 minutes to find the information out. Anyway, I've read through it several times bc. it all seems to unclear. I wish I could have read that several people did the same thing and it worked. But people had different solutions. I think I'll call Dell parts and ask about this one: Part #J4975 ($32.99): * IEEE 1394 PCI Card (all internal cables included) for Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop * One end has FireWire port that will be accessible on front of computer (i.e., via the existing slot) * The other end is the PCI Card (which connects to the motherboard) and also has three additional FireWire ports accessible on back of computer. * Internal cables (included with purchase) connect the two ends. * All four FireWire ports have 6-pin heads. But even that part number is wrong - it's supposed to be Y4975. It sounds like the right thing to me. Then I can just plug in my Lego parts. Dell support is just so uninformed. Back to the hard drive, do I need to get cables as well as the drive? I'm sure I need 1 or 2 cables to connect the drive to my computer - and I'm asking in case that answer is more clear. Thanks. Oceanna, I think many of those shows actually have very tight budgets - the real key is that the designers aren't personally invested in the space so it's a lot easier to buy something to stick on the wall - they don't have to live with it day in and day out like a homeowner would. Also some really junky stuff can look sumptuous on camera but tacky IRL. Although I do agree with you, Oceanna that some shows where the homeowner is paying for everything, some do have large budgets for art. Winker, you're in a tough spot. I would pull everything out and move things around to the rooms that you think they will work - keep moving things around until you have found some a "home". Consider storing the rest for a year or two and if you never use them, sell them. If you are brave, you can sell them right away to get that load off your shoulders. Tough love, sorry. If you have stuff you haven't used for two years - get rid of it now because it's likely you'll never use it. I know it's really hard sometimes to give this stuff up. I find TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Kirklands etc. are very dangerous stores so I usually avoid them like the plague or I'd find myself in the same trap you are in.

Is your PC on the same network (LAN) that the office PC is? If not, I'd drop the idea of reaching across the internet to access the office PC. Too difficult for a non-expert and too many security issues, also, most internet connections are too slow to upload video.

The quickest and easiest approach might be to copy the video files from the office PC onto an external drive, which you could then carry home and connect to your PC.

Raven, tell me more about what you have in mind in suggesting a novice user can use an external IP address to access a PC across the internet.

I never suggested any such thing the question was asked about finding the IP address of a computer that is the question I answered how to find an IP address!!! NOTHING MORE

As I think about it, I believe some security programs are set up to facilitate a type of "remote access" by uploading or by rerouting inquiries using a third party site.

OP, sorry for the misdirection, maybe that's what is being used? The above info can help you find the office's external (to the internet) IP address. You may need (or already have) a website address, and a user name and password.

I guess I didn't make myself clear- sorry.
I can do all the work at the office- which is about 500 feet away from my condo.
I can use/get into the office computer fine.
I don't know which IP/or whatever you need to use, so that I can get online with my netbook at home 500 feet away.
I want to watch video from my home without downloading everything to a dvd/disc at the office and then bringing it home to watch. There is a way to watch live/saved video on the computer that is at my house even though the 'film' is on the computer at the office.
Hope I made myself more clear.

I should have added that I can look at the IP addresses- and whatever ......but I don't know which things/numbers I need to know, in order to put that info into my computer. In other words, I have everything but I don't know what to do with it!

I have several network camera's.. all come with a remote configuration/live-system viewer program. All are very configurable to upload saved video to a local computer or a www computer.

To access them remotely the computer they are on has to be running some kind of server that is configured to be open to the www. For the server to actually be open to the web,, its router has to be set up to allow it to talk to the www.

Do you have a remote control system software program installed on your home computer ? Can anybody anywhere view the live video ?
