how do I figure out which IP address?

I am in charge of running our security camera/download video if there is an incident (theft/vandalism) in our complex. I have to go through HOURS of searching to get data from various cameras. The office is not very comforable for me, so I would like to at least do the searching from home. I know I can watch at home from my computer if I enter in the IP addresses (or something), but I don't know which numbers/what to do to watch from home. I called the company who our equipment is with and they said they don't know, and to call the server. I called the server (Time Warner), and they said they didn't know. I seem to get the 'I don't know-call the other guy' from everyone.

If you can find the recorded video files, maybe try right clicking the filename.mp4 ? and select properties. You might be able to copy and paste the file address.. Then use the folder address to see whats in the folder(s)

Its possible it uploads to an ftp account ? So you might find it easier to access the folder and see file dates and times with an ftp program like FileZilla . If that is how your system works.. So many different ways they can save files, .. so im just guessing,,, its hard to be specific.

is there someone there that can just tell you by phone or email the current IP address there?

One easy way to get your IP address that is easy for most people to remember is go to
www.ipchicken.com

or they can get it by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.

Under Connection, click View status.
Click Details.
Your computer's IP address appears in the Value column, next to "IPV4 IP Address."

Startup programs vary by manufacturer and platform. All very subjective at times also. I can run a Hijack This and chop all manner of "seemingly" unnecessary startups out of a system and have it perform really well, only to have a callback about "such-and-such" that isn't there any more. Laptops especially can have a lot of things running that may not appear on a desktop simply due to the nature of the hardware. Of course those very same machines can have a boatload of trialware included in the image, as say, the Sony Vaios did. It is a matter of first understanding the scan from a utility like Hijack This and then actioning according to YOUR expectations. I guess that's why there are forums such as this!

No, the transformer is not an energy source, it just steps the voltage down from the 120V line voltage to the appropriate voltage for the landscape light system - maybe 12V, maybe 24v. It doesn't matter, in terms of power consumption, that the transformer stepped the power down to 12 volts because, as the voltage goes down, the amperage must go up to achieve the same wattage. It's still the wattage of the bulb that determines how much power is being consumed. It might help to know that Watts=Volts*Amps. 160W of 12V bulbs will be drawing 13.3 amps from the transformer. Notice that 12V X 13.3 Amps =160 Watts. In order to supply 13.3 amps at 12 volts, the transformer draws 1.33 Amps at 120 Volts; the line-voltage side of the transformer is working at ten times the voltage and one-tenth the amperage of the low-voltage side, but the wattage, 120V * 1.33 Amps, still works out to 160W. The particular voltage at which the load is applied really doesn't matter. Take a look at your electric bill. The units used to measure power consumption are Kilowatt-Hours, abbreviated kWh. This is the amount of power consumed by, for example, a 1000-watt light bulb if left on for one hour. Imagine that you left your 160 watts worth of low-voltage lights on all night - we'll call it 8 hours. 160 watts/1000 is 0.16 kilowatts. 0.16 kW X 8 hours = 1.28 kWh, which is what the power company bills you for. It might cost you fourteen cents for that night. If you'd had, instead, two 23w CFLs, you'd have used .046 kW X 8 hours = 0.368 kWh, for which you might pay about four cents.

Natal, I ended up doing absolutely nothing at all. This includes applying any sealer of any kind--we wanted to leave it natural. It's been almost 1.5 years since I made that last post in mid-November '05. From memory, we had our first snowfall pretty soon after the deck was finished, so I didn't have too much time to do anything. Then around that time we had other renovation projects going on, so I pretty much forgot about the deck stains. If I recall correctly, it was a very wet winter with more snow than usual, and it was also pretty cold so that the snow stayed on the deck for quite some time. Then all of 2006 passed, and I honestly cannot recall when it was that the stains became unnoticeable. I live in the Northeast, so the deck has seen it all--rain, sun, heat, and snow. I was just thinking a few days ago that the deck was looking nice these days (I happen to prefer the mellow, faded-out look--for the record, it's not totally gray or silver yet, it's a faint and weathered version of its original color). Anyway, I didn't notice the stains anymore, but then again, I wasn't looking for them. Quite possibly, the stains have indeed weathered-out, just as my builder said they would. I'm pretty sure he knew that we weren't going to seal the deck, so maybe that's why he told me to let it be. If you're planning to seal your deck, I'd listen to Pressurepros's post above, and make the builder address it. For what it's worth, someone on this board emailed me about this issue way back then, and the suggestion was to try scrubbing it out with Dawn dishwashing liquid. I don't remember the particulars of whether it should be done in solution or straight, because winter caught up to me before I could act on the suggestion. And it turns out that the stains on my deck didn't end up being a problem at all. But at any rate, I'd ask your builder about it. Good luck.

I presume you may be dealing with the old style cloth wiring. If this is the case, if you look very closly you will notice that one of the wires has a faint stripe. That is the neutral that would attach to the white wire from the fixture. A more accurate way is to use one of the various testors available. The hot black wire will show current while the neutral white will not. Your local hardware should have a tester with a lightbulb.

Is your PC on the same network (LAN) that the office PC is? If not, I'd drop the idea of reaching across the internet to access the office PC. Too difficult for a non-expert and too many security issues, also, most internet connections are too slow to upload video.

The quickest and easiest approach might be to copy the video files from the office PC onto an external drive, which you could then carry home and connect to your PC.

Raven, tell me more about what you have in mind in suggesting a novice user can use an external IP address to access a PC across the internet.

I never suggested any such thing the question was asked about finding the IP address of a computer that is the question I answered how to find an IP address!!! NOTHING MORE

As I think about it, I believe some security programs are set up to facilitate a type of "remote access" by uploading or by rerouting inquiries using a third party site.

OP, sorry for the misdirection, maybe that's what is being used? The above info can help you find the office's external (to the internet) IP address. You may need (or already have) a website address, and a user name and password.

I guess I didn't make myself clear- sorry.
I can do all the work at the office- which is about 500 feet away from my condo.
I can use/get into the office computer fine.
I don't know which IP/or whatever you need to use, so that I can get online with my netbook at home 500 feet away.
I want to watch video from my home without downloading everything to a dvd/disc at the office and then bringing it home to watch. There is a way to watch live/saved video on the computer that is at my house even though the 'film' is on the computer at the office.
Hope I made myself more clear.

I should have added that I can look at the IP addresses- and whatever ......but I don't know which things/numbers I need to know, in order to put that info into my computer. In other words, I have everything but I don't know what to do with it!

I have several network camera's.. all come with a remote configuration/live-system viewer program. All are very configurable to upload saved video to a local computer or a www computer.

To access them remotely the computer they are on has to be running some kind of server that is configured to be open to the www. For the server to actually be open to the web,, its router has to be set up to allow it to talk to the www.

Do you have a remote control system software program installed on your home computer ? Can anybody anywhere view the live video ?
