Question about Microsoft Works

My husband has a new Dell Inspiron 570. Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, IE 9.0.

Our question is the following:

It came with Microsoft 2010 Excel Start and Microsoft 2010 Word Start.....it is awful.....I have Works Suite 2002 which came with from my Dell Desktop (XP)....I would like to remove the Microsoft 2010 Start from his computer and install Works Suite 2002....is this advisable?

Assuming Works 2002 runs under Windows 7, why not?

I would install the works before removing the office starter. That way if the works doesn't install you still have the office starter - I would leave them both on if it were me. There's no conflict. There's nothing wrong with tje starter, you're just not used to it. When MS introduced the ribbon they now use is office it confused a lot of people. The word and excel starters are not full-functioned but the work very well and are all most people really need.

Yes, if all else has failed I would remove the program and start over. Most HP printers seem to require you to start your program install with the printer not even connected to the computer. At a given point you will be notified to connect and the computer tries to recognise the printer and the process moves on to completion. Silly time now but you seem to be running out of options to try. Have you got a Works version created before the year 2000? If so did you install this patch? If not and you do not have it you can download it from here. It is the third option from the bottom. Seems foolish but we never know with these gadgets of ours. I had an unsettling day with my HP yesterday while printing labels. The humidity was causing pages to stick together to get my rankled to begin with. Then the printer would not start the print job. Hmm, checked everything. Eventually I discovered my labels were wider than the allowable settings so a notice popped up advising me. But in an instant the "I am printing" notice popped up covering the first notice and the printer could not start till I acknowledged the error that I was unaware of LOL.

All done scanning...nothing found and MSE seems to be working correctly again after a restart....I guess all is well for now. Thank you for your help and concern...you probably know how we novices panic when something goes wrong :o)

I agree with acraftylady. I used lots of the free software and wasn't satisfied that they were good enough in today's world. I also ran a good software that wasn't free and had lots of trouble with their updates. They were rated as one of the best. I decided to try the much-maligned Norton products and haven't been happier. No troubles and very nice customer support. Piasano, as suggested here by another, use Norton's "chat" tool to work with this company. If necessary Norton will be able to lock into your pc to check it and see for themselves where the problem is coming from. It's a safe tool and they will unlock and break all contact with you when they resolve your PC's problem. Another option is Open Office. It's completely free and quite powerful. It also "looks" like the older versions of Microsoft Office.

There is no conflict at all between the two. You can leave both on the computer or uninstall it before or after you try Open Office. If it were me I would leave it until I was sure I preferred the replacement.

OO is a very nice word processing application. Just be sure when you create a document you initially save it in the format you desire, i.e. Works or Word. If you don't the work product will be saved as a OO default format of .odp which won't be read by other applications.
