opinions about microsoft essencials

What do the pros here think about microsoft essencials. I have been told that I don't need other av or malware programs if I use it. Also told to use windows xp firewall instead of outpost that I use now.

So what do ya think? I value this forums opinion a lot.

Good question...I have been using Microsoft Essentials on my Lap Top (Vista)....I have not allow Windows Firewall..so I would like to know if I need Windows Firewall with the free version of Microsoft Essentials. Thanks for any comments.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. Very simple to use and seems to work fine. It also includes Spyware protection. It actually turns Windows defender off on Vista and Windows 7. Because you don't need 2 Spyware programs running in real time at the same time.

It does not include any type of firewall protection. So you should turn on the windows vista and Windows 7 Firewall on.

since you said you don't know anything about it then I would run a belarc to get all the info about the pc and a SIW, plus you will want to run a secunia scan to see what needs updating on it and do those asap. Belarc Advisor SIW those are good to print so that you have all the info handy should you need it. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) I forgot to mention adding spywareblaster to your security list, just install, update then once a week open it hit update then click the enable all protection so the shield turns green. SpywareBlaster be sure you get the free version when you go to the download link just continue with the one you started with do not move to the trial of the pay version.

I agree with acraftylady. I used lots of the free software and wasn't satisfied that they were good enough in today's world. I also ran a good software that wasn't free and had lots of trouble with their updates. They were rated as one of the best. I decided to try the much-maligned Norton products and haven't been happier. No troubles and very nice customer support. Piasano, as suggested here by another, use Norton's "chat" tool to work with this company. If necessary Norton will be able to lock into your pc to check it and see for themselves where the problem is coming from. It's a safe tool and they will unlock and break all contact with you when they resolve your PC's problem. Along with others in the industry, top Norton security personnel works with our government to detect and resolve hacker and other security problems.

Without a scaled drawing, it's impossible to figure if this will work. You've obviously put careful thought and and some effort into making the neat lines and labeling, but without scale, it isn't really moving your project forward. Graph paper, a straight edge and a fine Sharpie is all it takes. D/l some graph paper, print and sketch your plan on it to scale. The grid is what will highlight scale errors. In particular, draw the swing of the fridge doors, is this a s/s model? Is the fridge door hinged on the right as you stand in front of it? That means that you'll have to walk past the door then turn and open the door as you haven't got enough clearance there to stand in front of open the door because of the island. Fourteen feet is still too narrow for an island as you have shown it. I suspect it looks better than it is because it is not to scale. Your end seating position won't work as you can't have the legs of two people occupying the same place. It would be OK for a high chair, for a year or two. Skip the island seating - you have a breakfast nook right there for eating in the kitchen. Narrow the island to a work only one. Keep one tall stool for sitting while you work at the island (tucked under end towards nook) or for a single person to sit and keep the cook company. Draw the plan on graph paper to catch measuring errors. Don't forget to draw in all door swing dimensions. (Is there enough room to have a person and an open door. Do it for fridge, DW drop-down door and oven.. Use actual dimensions for these. Include counter overhangs. (Generally they are 1.5", but can be varied in a pinch.) Overall the flow from one work station to another is good, but now you need to see if you can fit it in, or only if you can bend the space/time continuum somehow. You've thought about the flow through the kitchen, now move on to the next step. HTH L.

I got a new hard-drive and more RAM in my laptop. At the same time, it was upgraded to Win10. I use Opera and Google. I would use the Edge, except that it's not compatible with AdBlockPlus. I wouldn't be without ABP. I'm trying to upgrade the desktops to Win10. It took a couple of hours to (we thought) install on hubby's computer, but when it was done, it was still on Win7. So I don't know what it was doing all that time. We'd check on it, and it was installing (85% done, etc). I'm going to do it on my desktop to see if I have any problems. He did it from Microsoft's site, so I don't know why it didn't install.

I would keep your outpost firewall on XP. XP is a one way Firewall not the best.

Only run 1 Anti Virus program at a time. So yes if you install Microsoft Security Essentials that is all you need to run. Don't run it with Norton, McAfee,Avg, or any others.

upnflying the xp firewall is one way and is not sufficient. Keep your outpost if you like it or get another like zone alarm. The vista and Win 7 firewalls are 2 way and OK.

I have used MSE since it came out almost a year ago along with the MS firewall. There is no other protection on this Windows 7 computer and I have no reason to doubt it works. It updates automatically and is set to run a scan at 2 a.m. each Sunday - you can change that if you wish.

The fear with anything fully automatic is that the user may fail to check that it is working occasionally.

The down side with Windows 7 (and I think Vista) is that when the computer enters sleep mode the scan does not take place till the next time you open the computer back up. Not a real problem but at first you wonder why the hard drive is going nuts on Monday mornings :~)

Thanks everyone that puts my mind at ease. Now the laptop with vista is going to get the same treatment.
