I'm still waiting for a third thought. A preserves swap might be good - I'll bet they have those on the harvest forum. Or maybe a marinade swap.

Lars not everyone makes/cans preserves but I like the idea of sending something homemade. What about a swap where we only have three categories, (1) Something homemade, (2) Favourite Cookbook, (3) Something local? Lots of options within each of these categories.

I used to wash comforters in an agitator top-loader. Looking back on it, I realize it's an indefensible practice. The agitator beats up the part that's close to it, possibly abrading the surface or worse, while the rest of the comforter barely moves. Meanwhile the whole comforter is trying to float out of the water. My wife likes to launder comforters frequently, so the rule here is that we don't buy a comforter that won't fit into our 4 cu ft (IEC measurement) Miele. This means we don't use a king-size comforter on our king-size bed, rather we use two smaller comforters. Twin, or full at most, but not full-queen which is too big. Laundromat isn't an option for a couple of reasons: 1) Decent laundromats are ten or more miles away; 2) We use unscented detergent, which means we get the mixed scent of the detergents everyone else uses at the laundromat.

Having Second Thoughts About Flooring

Thanks for all your responses! I'm really torn both ways. I'm tired of the upkeep of wood, along with having to be so many precautions to prevent scratching. I recall having to put cushions under all the sofas to ensure no gouges, along with making sure the felt tips were on all my chairs. Then there is the thing about asking that everyone remove their shoes, lest another scratch shows up. That said, their is an undeniable beauty of wood flooring. It's mostly just my DH and I (son finishing college) and a very small dog, so the daily wear and tear isn't much. We do have a lot of family get togethers though. Another issue for the hardwood is the hardness in the living room. In the house with the hardwood in the family, no one hardly ever sat on the floor (even with the padded area rug). The previous house to that and now this house which had/have carpet, I am often on the floor/carpet. I think if I were to go hardwood in the main areas, I would omit the living room for this reason alone. I LOVE getting down on the floor with the grandkids. Plus with the hardwood, I had to lay a protector under the rug, to protect the hardwood, still had problems though with fading. With tile though, I'm not sure I could use enough padding to make it as comfortable as I like (though I wouldn't have to worry about protecting the darn wood floors). The case against tile, is the cold factor. I saw where it costs about $10/sq foot for heated floors. Too pricey for me. I love some of the light color marble looking porcelain tiles. Bright, pretty and elegant. Tile goes so far away from what is mainstream in this area though scares me. Perhaps, I should get a box of tiles and spread them out and see it that way. I need new flooring so bad (crappy carpeting is pulling away at the seams even), so I shouldn't put this decision off too long.

Some random thoughts... Re: the trees. Some maples are solid trees, some aren't as said so I'd get someone who knows trees to look at them. The real estate agent *can't* say anything against the house by obligation. They have a fiduciary obligation to the seller so never trust a real estate agent. They're out for the money. If they'll put it in writing that the trees are solid, fine, then they're responsible but of course they won't. Real estate agents rank very close to telemarketers IMO. Also, if you need to remove the trees, that can be rather costly. So be careful. However, again, they could be good trees and I'm a fan of trees. Re: the lawn. I like a big yard. If you're not too finicky, just get a riding mower and you can handle mowing. Or if you don't like it, hire it done or in the future you could hire someone. I've been hiring occasionally when I just can't handle it. Not very expensive and I find great value having distance between myself and the neighbors. Re: Standing water. Can be important or not. How much water? Can it be modified slightly to drain better? With the bottom of the outbuilding rotted it suggests an issue although that could depend on the age. Have you had an unusual amount of precipitation recently, snow and rain that would make this a fluke or is it normal amount of water? If it's normal, expect it. If it's going to pond water in the summer, you could have mosquito issues. What's the soil conditions? Sandy? Clay? If there's not very good drainage that would be a consideration. Re: the outbuilding. The owner saying it's good, well, that's a representation. If they don't make a disclosure you could have recourse against them if it turns out it's more rotted than you think. I might still have it inspected and do some negotiating that they misrepresented the place so they're not trustworthy. Are there any disclosures on the place about it, the drainage, etc? Re: Mailbox. You can buy a new mailbox for $10-$20 and up if the looks of the mailbox really bothers you. That wouldn't be a consideration to me nor would replacing the glass on the light fixture. That's petty cash expense. You'd spend more buying a piece of Tupperware than those two expenses combined! I wouldn't let that determine whether or not to buy a house. Re: Outside looks (brick, etc) To me, would see the inside of the house more than the outside so to me, the inside is more important. Much like I'm more concerned about holiday decorations *inside*, that I'll see, than outside. I'm not here to put on airs for others. Some people take a lot of pride in the outside looks of their houses and want it a certain way. If that's you, there's treatments for brick, even paint, which I dislike, but many like it. Options: Have sellers remove the trees, remove or repair the outbuilding or deduct from the price appropriately. As far as adding on... Are you going to get what the other house offers you, or a different house should you decide to keep looking? Remodeling can be expensive but doesn't have to be. If you can get what you want, and if you like where you live, then it's worth considering. Sit down and write out what you REALLY want in a house. Include room sizes, costs, payments if applicable, don't forget taxes, insurance, how close to shopping, doctors, recreation, etc. Then, see if the house you're looking at has it. How about the house you have? How does it compare? Then look at a few different modifications to the house. With it done, how would it compare? For me, an attached garage is a very important feature on a house so when I look for places, it really subtracts value if there's not at least a single attached garage. It helps if it would be able to be added easily. I've run across several places I really liked, but when I went home, sat down and looked at my priority list, well I haven't moved yet... Years ago I made a list of things I really like about my place and a list of things I really don't like, together with things I would like in a new place and might like. There's been things on other houses I've seen that impress me so I noted them. I know I'll never find "the perfect place" but it helps to evaluate different ones. And now as I'm getting older, accessibility is more and more important. But I try to keep it realistic. For instance a new place would be nice if it was one level living, however as long as there's the main rooms, a bathroom and a bedroom on the main floor, it would work for me. A place with all bedrooms and bathroom(s) upstairs would not. Also with looking at places I've seen some modifications to certain common style houses that were well done and really would work well for me. Maybe some of these would help you in your considerations. Kinda makes your head spin, I know. In most places, it's still more of a buyer's market so don't let a salesperson scam you. And keep in mind there's LOTS of houses for sale even if you don't get this one!

We bought our WP at IRG in Brisbane for $43 sq. ft. and had a HARD time finding it. We live in very far northern, rural California (Humboldt County) and the few slab yards in the area hadn't even heard if it. One of the yards here finally said they could get it, but it was going to cost $124 sq. ft. uninstalled, we couldn't pick our slabs, and we would have to sign a contract before it was shipped here that we couldn't reject it if we didn't like it.... Um, no thanks. When we called IRG the first time, they said they had two slabs, but they were from different lots; one was polished, one satin. But, they said they were getting another shipment within the month. They called a few weeks later on a Monday and said they'd received 20 slabs, all polished. DH and I couldn't make the 600+ round trip drive until the following Saturday due to work. When we called to confirm they still had some slabs on Friday, ten were already gone. We arrived at opening and picked our two slabs. While we were finalizing our purchase, a lady came in wanting four slabs. She was super MAD when she saw the hold on ours and actually tried to convince the salesman to sell them to her instead, not knowing that we were the purchasers! Thank you for all the warnings. Super White and White Princess are different quartzites, both very beautiful. I am hoping for the best regarding etching, but I know it's a possibility.... We're definitely sealing, which I know won't help etching, but will prevent staining. Our slabs will be arriving in our garage this week, where they will remain until we're ready to purchase cabinets. :( I'll test them then, and, believe me, I'm holding my breath! I love, love, LOVE my slabs and don't want to be disappointed!

Yeah, like anyone here would go by the rules. Remember the "five item" rule??

I'm good on the local and cookbook items. I guess I could do home made. I'd get my mother to do it.

Oh! I like those categories. Just worried about the homemade one though. Aside from home canning items, what other homemade stuff ships well?
User

May, Homemade would cover all kinds of categories. It doesn't have to be something you canned or a food item. If you sew it could be an apron or placemats or maybe cloth napkins. The last swap Stacy sent me a beautiful painting that she did of Stetson. Diane is an artist with her camera and sent framed photos. I 've sent homemade candles before. Just a few ideas.

If you do this, I think you need to very strongly insist that it is three items only. Tell people there will be swaps where they can get carried away, but his one is a three items only swap. However, because some people can't do the homemade thing, what if you made that category homemade OR personal favorite. That way if someone, for instance, can't make cherry butter, they could send American Spoon Fruit cherry butter instead? That kind of thing. Then those people who are "homemade challenged" can still participate.

Well goodness knows I don't can or sew and I ahve only just mastered bread and that doesn't travel well......but I certainly can make something!! I really like the three categories and would be honoured to get ANYTHING homemade!

But...I would not want anyone to feel left out if they felt the absolutely could not do homemade.

Well homemade isn't all that hard. This time of year craft shows and bazaars are getting big. I think it could be someone else's handmade or handcrafted??? Yes..NO??

I love the idea..I'm all for it!

But I always send something homemade. ~wink~
And something local is way easy and a cookbook is easy too.
Funny I think I hit all 3 categories in my last swap box.

Sherry, I like your idea that anyone wanting to participate in this swap has to agree to stick to the "three items". We might need to clarify "Items" though. ie.. You might only send one jar of jam, or one cookbook, but you wouldn't send one placemat or one napkin, but a set of placemats or napkins. Some things naturally come in sets or pairs, etc.

Terri, exactly. Homemade doesn't have to be something that you make yourself, it could be something that someone else made. At the Farmers Markets that I go to there are a number of different vendors that sell homemade jams/jellies/pickles, etc, as well as crafts, such as the handpainted wine glasses, chimes made from old silverware, wooden bowls and boards, placemats, etc.. But the idea would be to stick to the general idea of "three".

So homemade shouldn't be to hard to come by.

The homemade category might give me a little trouble if it absolutely had to be made by me. Wait, just thought of something I could do! Regardless, if you open it up to homemade by anyone, that would be easy. In the last swap, I sent a jar of sour cherry jam made by a small, local bakery - that would cound has homemade, right? I also love sheshebop's suggestion of a "personal favorite" category.

I splurged on the last swap because it was my first, but I'd be happy to have a 3 item only rule this time around. Then we can be out-of-control on the one after that, right?

GG, I still think folks will get out of control.
I can't! I have to set a limit. But I love doing these!

Yes, Homemade/Handmade, by your or someone else, good enough for me.

However, it's not to hard to use the web to find a spice blend or some other "dried" thing one can put together and send. A bread mix, a cookie mix. Those recipes are a dime a dozen online.
Anyone can put those together in a ziploc or a jar or a tin.

I like it. Will participate if anyone is willing to ship outside N-America. Can't do favourite cookbook because it's in Icelandic, but might send something by my favourite cookbook author instead.

I think homemade can be stretched into including handmade. I bought a beautiful handmade ceramic vase at the Culver City farmers' market, and there are plenty of other handmade things there.

I actually studied Old Icelandic in college (as part of my German major), although I don't remember much of it. It is supposed to help to learn Scandinavian languages, and it survived because modern Icelandic is more similar to Old Icelandic than other Scandinavian languages.

I have cookbooks in German and Spanish, as well as English, but I can understand cookbooks written in Dutch, and I can also read Italian and French well enough to understand recipes. I'd probably have problems with Icelandic, however, although I could probably handle Russian. The problem I have with the German cookbooks is that everything is metric and I don't have a good kitchen scale (although I do have a postal scale accurate to 5g. FSR I'm more put off by metric measurements and weights for things like flour and sugar than I am having to read a foreign language. I guess I'm just not used to using a kitchen scale. I don't have a problem with the liters or liquid measurements - just the weight ones.

I missed the last swap, and thought I'd check out this thread! I love the ideas presented, especially that home made doesn't necessarily mean made by me!

I agree, homemade/handmade does not necessarily have to be made by the sender. This time of year is great for fall art fairs and boutiques.

Three items....hmmm....that will be tough, but I could do it if the categories aren't too specific. But you KNOW there will be someone who will go over the top and send a bazillion things and find a way to make them "count as one".

Linda
User
Linda, not this time. Anyone wanting to participate will have to agree up front to stick to the three item theme. And this doesn't mean three categories with a number of items in each.

One jar of homemade jam or other preserves would be one item, but 4 or 8 placemats would also be one item. Items that come in sets would be considered one item. And one cookbook means one cookbook. Although I have seen some cookbooks that come in sets.

And I like your point about fall fairs and farmers markets. Maybe this is the perfect time to start this swap.
