I got a very nice 750gb serial ATA drive for $60 from Amazon in Feb 2010. A place called JDMadera on ebay sells a removable drive carriage for it for $13. Buy the two and you can put in and out that or any drive (serial) or get one each, serial / parallel and pop in / out any drive. This will give you free space and help you manage your data , safely, with a way to store it if you want it safe. Look on gogle for any 'file I can delete safely'. Don't take it's word for it. read and undersand before you do anything. However anything with a tmp at the end of the filename is OK to delete. If you're unsure do this: RAR or ZIP up all of the files that are .tmp files from any one directory so that when you later unzip them they can all go back to that same directory. Makes housekeeping easy.. Then after zipping or rarring them delete them (not the rar or zip file of course). If after a month or two you don't seem to need them of course then delete them. That's a method to help you save space. But I'd spend the $60 or $75 and get the peace of mind of having backup, safety, and anew thinking process to help you manage what will ALWAYS bea a constant problem Good luck. Andre

You really need to think about getting a new computer, Windows 98se is no longer supported by microsoft, that in self makes it a security risk and venerable to infections. I can only hope no credit card transactions ect are being done with this machine..

Daisey just removing programs will not make your computer run faster unless the hard drive is over filled. To see how much free space is on your hard drive click Start then click My computer. A window will appear and you will see your hard drive listed with the total size and the amount of free space. For the computer to run efficiently you need 25% or more free space. This allows you 'swap file' to operate at it's peak. A few questions. What anti virus are you using? What anti spyware programs are you using and do you keep them up to date and run them every couple of weeks? What firewall are you using? What operating system are you using? How much memory does the computer have? To check how much memory click Start, click Control Panel, click System and right near the bottom of the new window you will see how much RAM is installed. To start improving things you could download and install Ccleaner which is linked below. Run without changing any settings. This will remove all the bits and pieces left behind over time and give you more hard drive space. Then you should do a defrag. To defrag the computer click Start, click All programs, slide up and click Accessories, slide over and down to click System Tools then click Disk defragmenter. Once there click to start the defrag, you can walk away for perhaps an hour now whie it does a clean up and tidies all the files. Hi owbist, Thrdfrt what each poster above has noted is good advice but as you have seen they all use different methods. Unlike any other home user item a computer offers so many ways to accomplish a task. None need be wrong, it is simply a personal preference. OK, so from what you are saying is that, you can defrag in safe mode if you want or you can just use the other programs without using safe mode if you wish. That makes total sense to me. So it is as simple as that. That's good to know and now I can make my decision as to what I want to do without fear of messing up. Thanks for the great explanation. BTW, I hope that you all know that I wasn't thinking in the terms of right or wrong here, it was all about me being able to understand it. Sometimes I see things more complicated than what it actually is and my focus is, there is only one way to fix this problem. In this case, I don't need to stay on that one way track, I understand now that I can choose a different route that still gets me to the same place.
