Question about mulled window units

We specified several large mulled window units for our new build. The framers framed all the window openings and they all look good except the bedroom. We were told when we spec'd the windows that the bedroom unit would be too large to factory mull and ship, but that it could be mulled on site.

However, the framers have put vertical strips of wood in the bedroom window frame which is where each individual window would be attached. These vertical pieces don't exist in any other window. It was my understanding that with a mulled window, you wouldn't have these wood strips between the windows. Is this what "mulling on site" means, that they just put this wood between the windows? Or am I going to have a bedroom window that looks different than the rest of my factory mulled units?

I don't care if they're physically different, I just want them all to look the same when they're done. Does anyone know?

Mulling on site or at the factory results in the same look. However, any rough framing between the two (which is what you are describing) will leave a wider spacing than being mulled together. If you want them to match other mulled windows exactly, you'll have to mull on site. Your window distributor should be familiar with the process, and should be the one to do the work.

They sell mulling kits so the windows can be attached the same way they would be in the factory. Rather than use the mulling strips, some builders use 2x4 (or 6) between the windows. Is this what your framer did?

The ATW sill should work fine and provide a much better overlap at the sill brick. Provide proper flashing under the rowlock sill. You can buy the Sterling Double Hung with an added 1 5/16" wide aluminum brick mold trim and a 5/8" tall "traditional" sill nosing. The sill only projects a small amount. The nailing flange is attached to the added trim which is probably a more water resistant detail. The cost should be substantially offset by the cost of cellular PVC trim and it's additional installation cost. But I've never actually used these trim pieces.

Hi @nehome. I know it has been 4 years but on the chance you're still around, I would love to see the result of your mulled Andersen Woodwright windows. I am about to order our windows and our order will include three 2-wide double hung mulled units (one over kitchen sink, one to replace a picture window in our dining room and one in a bedroom. I am trying to visualize what the mull will look like on the interior, The image on the quote is the exterior view and shows several different measurements, one appears to be the width of each window, ie. 23 3/8, the other is the RO width (47 3/8) and then the unit width is 46 7/8. 23 3/8 x 2 = 46 3/4 so I guess that means the mull width is .125 but this seems really narrow. I must be missing something.

Thank you, @kl23. Your windows do look great! The Full Divided Light (FDL) as Andersen calls it (others call it Simulated Divided Light (SDL) with spacer bar) is very attractive. It looks like maybe your neighbors window has Grills Between Glass. I appreciate you sharing these photos. I have had a couple people question my desire for 6 over 6 FDL or SDL with spacer bar (I hear, "oh, so you want to clean 24 rectangles between inside and out, per window!") but I really like the look and we have a traditional cape so 6 over 6 is appropriate. Any way two vinyl windows can appear together as mulled/twins?

Few things: 1) Major red flags on that framing as others have indicated. Whomever did that should be fired, relative or not 2) I'm not understanding the cost savings aspect about single windows vs twin. Its two windows either way. Pretty much all vinyl windows are custom made to size these days, the only thing that could be called "stock size" is what the local box store may have on the shelf. If that is the route planned, I'd reiterate my first point. 3) With all of that said, mulling two vinyl windows together is very cheap and easy. If there is a utility channel (most vinyl windows do have), a "C" or "U" mull will snap in there to bring them together. Some others use an "H" mull that covers both edges.

Thanks... when we went back to the site the framers had removed the strips so I guess they figured out that the windows are supposed to be mulled. I guess we'll find out when the windows show up.

sue36, yes, they had 2x4s in the window spaces but as thomas mentioned, I think this would have increased the spacing between the windows more than on those that are factory mulled. Since I don't know what's involved in "mulling" a window I can't say for sure. Time will tell.
