How to access a Guest Acct.

From the Account Users setup in control panel:

---------------------------------------------------------

Guest account

The guest account is intended for use by someone who has no user account on the computer. There is no password for the guest account, so the user can log on quickly to check e-mail or browse the Internet. A user logged on to the guest account:

Cannot install software or hardware, but can access applications that have already been installed on the computer.

Cannot change the guest account type.

Can change the guest account picture.

-----------------------------------------------------------

How do they log into the acct. to check their email or surf? I've been reading all the links on setup but just can't seem to find it. When I open "change guest acct." the only options are change the picture and turn off.

Would like to give weekend guests access to their email, etc. and keep mine private. Thanks, Sandy

Hi Sandy,
I am assuming it's Win XP. Do you use the welcome screen (click on your icon) or Windows login (type in your name and password) to access your account?

When you logon to the computer, ,, type Guest as the login user name.

Or just open task manager and log off and back on as Guest.

I do the same as Annie and Lynn. If the people are your close friends, they usually will seat where they are most comfortable. For example, in the winter, the seats closest to the windows are colder, everyone has their favorite spot. The party you are describing sounds like the people might not know each other, or know each other well. In this case you are trying to set things up so they can have an opportunity to get to know each other better.

Don't be discouraged by the naysayers. But do think it through. It does depend on where you are. Many many people do that where we live. We did a modified version of it, because we were just weekenders before the main house was built. Outdoor kitchen, composting toilet, 12 x 14 ft cabin. I wouldn't want to live that way indefinitely, but I could have done it for a year (mild climate, though.) There is actually a mini-fridge, coffee-maker, and large toaster oven inside, just no plumbing. No HVAC. A small oil radiator is plenty for that tiny (insulated) space. It never gets hot here. First we had to have some clearing done and a driveway built. Then had a well drilled, then paid that off. Then had the full septic put in, paid that off. Then built a detached garage/shop. Those things would all have been done eventually, so they didn't really cost more. Might have been some economy of scale to having garage done simultaneously with house, but the other stuff cost what it cost. A small amount of extra trenching to get the electricity in. We built the main house with equity from the city house, so never had a construction loan, which helps when you want to do something nonstandard. Some of our friends and family love staying in the cabin, others prefer to stay in the main house. We generally give them a choice! It's crucial to know your local rules, though. Here, there are specific rules for Accessory Dwelling Units, and only so many permits given out per year.

How to break up this bonus room into a guest bedroom & office space?

I think I would make a design that has walls on the office as well. An office is not something that I consider a space that is pretty to look at and can get messy so having it in view of the public areas would bother me. The other part is what if you're on the phone do you want the noise from all the other areas to be transferring to your phone call? Say someone running the garbage disposal in the kitchen or TV noises from the living room, or just conversations, screaming children, barking dogs, etc. Not sure of your house make up, but there are plenty of sources of noise in a house. I work from home twice a week and having a place to go and close the door is very useful when others are around and especially when in meetings where I can have my phone on speaker and also work at the same time. This way I'm not disturbing others either and others can't hear what is being said either unless they stand outside the door and listen in of course.

Guest rooms - decor vs functional for guests

Tissue. Always put a box of tissue on the nightstand because when I get there, I may go through a full box. So a small trash can nearby would be of great help. :) A small writing pad and pen always comes in handy. If the room is large enough I'd definitely add some decor and still leave room for their things. Our friends and family don't need their own closet either unless there's an event to go to. When my dad would spend the night with us I always put a couple of books I knew he'd like on the nightstand. Always a 3way lamp. Enough things to make it homey. Go easy on layering the bed, even in winter. Drape an extra coverlet or blanket at the end of the bed or on a chair. No stacks of throw pillows! From experience of having to deal with them as a guest, they are a PITA. At least two bed pillows for each person. I've never hosted anyone other than a couple of out of town friends and family, and I'd never add bottled water. Too formal. Might as well lay a mint on the pillow. Make them feel at home, tell them they can have anything in the kitchen they want if they get up during the night. Nice disposable drinking glasses in the bathroom are good. If I had the room, the two pictures below are my style and the rooms are so inviting. Night stands are too small. Lamps and nightstands are too small, but the layout is perfect. I'd buy the clothes rack instead of giving up an extra closet.

Pam, I have XP-2, IE6.I leave it in standby and use the Welcome screen. I logged out of my acct. and tried to sign in as Guest but don't know where to go from there. It goes to a desktop but can't go further. I know I'm missing something very basic here.

Hi, mikie, nice to see you. Sandy

That's it Sandy! The desktop is not customized so appears as a plain jane desktop (no offense to any not-so-plain Janes). Your guest will just open IE (you may have to create a desktop icon)and go to the website where they access their email (like mail.live.com for hotmail or www.yahoo.com for Yahoo mail). If you want to make sure they don't use your account, you might password protect it. If you want to set up their email in OE, you will need all of their account and mail server info.

I was surprised to see a very plain jane desktop but it was good to see all my anti-malware sites there. Mine are all kept up to date, so these should be too, right? Or would they need updating for the new acct?

I created a desktop icon for Yahoo which should be fine since that's what they all use. And they should be able to access the rest of the web from there?

Thanks so much for your help. I was at a dead end. And I will take your suggestion to password protect my acct. too. Sandy

Your security applications should all be up to date. As far as your internet connection, do you have to click anything to get online or do you have an 'always on' connection? If you were able to open the Yahoo website, then they already have web access.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
