How small can guest bedroom be?
Comments (13)I can see it working just fine if you switch to a full-size bed instead of a twin; attach quarter-round shelf end tables to the walls at each side. You can make them yourselves. Not having the bulk of a cabinet under each one will expand the space visually and will also be a good place to stash a tiny waste basket. Every good guest room needs two decent reading lights. To achieve this in such a tiny room, all you have to do is add two, single wall mounted, swing arm lights above the nightstands. Attaching them to the side walls would be even better. Going with a plain colored, simple comforter and keeping the room monochromatic with the colors will help, too. Does the room have a closet? If so, that eliminates the need for a dresser. If you can fit it in, add a small chair and tiny table to one corner. I love slipper chairs because they're comfortable and compact, too. A nice reading lamp, next to the chair would be an added bonus, if it would fit. I'm seeing a compact/diminutive floor lamp that has a small shade. As for the closet, if there is one, build in or add shelves down one side for folded clothes, etc. A single rod at the top would accommodate longer clothing and you could hang one of those small hanging rods on a chain off of it to allow for pants and shirts to be hung there. Roman shades will keep the room sleeker than the bulk of curtains or drapes would, especially if they're the same color as the walls. I'd also look for a place to add a nice sized mirror to open up the room even more; one without a bulky frame that would intrude into the room. Anyhoo, I love challenges like this and, with all my siblings and parents living across the country from us, I'm always VERY appreciative of having a private, comfy guest room to stay in, no matter how small it is. Just give me a comfortable bed, a bedside table for my book and a glass, decent sized reading lamp (I hate those too short useless ones!!!), blinds on the windows for privacy and a room devoid of knick-knacks so that I space to put my own things out and I'm a very happy guest!...See Morequilting space vs second guest bedroom
Comments (22)Frhomez1, another thought came to me about this. You don't mention whether you have others living there. If it were just me living here I wouldn't think anything about leaving my hobby out in the "common" areas of the home. But I have DH who although he supports my having hobbies and thinks they are wonderful, I don't think he would like them being in his face all the time in the living/kitchen/dining areas. Just the same if he had a hobby I wouldn't want it in my face either. Just a thought. Knitting and crochet are easily put aside in a basket, etc. in the living room but it's different with a sewing machine, cutting table and stacks and/or bins of fabrics and supplies. When I'm in the middle of a project it gets messy, no way would I want to have to clear it out all the time. And I wouldn't expect DH to want to look at it, either....See MoreHELP elevate my 'modern' home office / guest bedroom!
Comments (16)Regardless of forever home or not it would make sense to utilize the closet better for all of your 'office' stuff so if that means getting an outlet put in there so the printer and all your stuff on the tall shelving can go in there - that would be wise. Then, daybed or not, replace the tall shelving and nightstand with a continuous low closed storage furniture piece - maybe like this photo - this will open up the room visually. This furniture piece can function as a nightstand and office storage. Closed storage is your friend in this space. Replacing the closet doors with slider doors would allow for the 'office' to function easier. Maybe the inside of the closet is converted to half 'closet' for guests use and half 'office' with shelves for printer and office supplies. Then, once you decide on daybed or not I'd repost an updated photo and we can help with rearranging art. I think where you have it now is not doing the room any justice. I could see it consolidated/edited on the wall where the tall shelving is as that will create a focal point....See MoreHelp! How can I make this small space into our guest bedroom.
Comments (57)Yikes! I didn't know that about pop-up trundles. Good to know so as to avoid them. I wonder if there are different quality ones that might be better? The day bed looks like it might work for kids, but I would hate to be the person in the back who would be up against a wall and have to climb out over the front person. eta: I looked again and it looks like it can be designed so there is no back on it, which might work perfectly, so you can have it away from the wall for access from both sides....See Moreauntthelma
