Guest bedroom / mud room layout advice
Comments (3)You're welcome. I've learned so much from Garden webbers that I'm happy to have helped someone else. I do like your new hybrid layout. As for sizes, take a tape measure and recreate the size your are considering. For example conside the 10'3'' bedroom to an actual bedroom you have now and see how it feels. It also depends on the size bed you will place in there. 10' is a bit tight but again if not used often then maybe it can do. Will your parents visit or move in? As for mudroom bench, we are having benches built into the top of the cubbies so it accomplishes 2 things in one. See pic one of the link attached. Also a list my husband complied for mudroom things to consider. (He complied a list based on research of what other people said, not necessarily need to accomodate everything). lower hook for kids 40 sq feet minimum waterproof paint thick hooks for winter coats thin hooks for smaller stuff window if possible bench drop station open shelves forshoes space for guest shoes water resistent flooring mirror? waste can rough in texture tiles to prevent slipping closet/storage?? when coats not in use Hope it helps and Good luck! Comments (13)I can see it working just fine if you switch to a full-size bed instead of a twin; attach quarter-round shelf end tables to the walls at each side. You can make them yourselves. Not having the bulk of a cabinet under each one will expand the space visually and will also be a good place to stash a tiny waste basket. Every good guest room needs two decent reading lights. To achieve this in such a tiny room, all you have to do is add two, single wall mounted, swing arm lights above the nightstands. Attaching them to the side walls would be even better. Going with a plain colored, simple comforter and keeping the room monochromatic with the colors will help, too. Does the room have a closet? If so, that eliminates the need for a dresser. If you can fit it in, add a small chair and tiny table to one corner. I love slipper chairs because they're comfortable and compact, too. A nice reading lamp, next to the chair would be an added bonus, if it would fit. I'm seeing a compact/diminutive floor lamp that has a small shade. As for the closet, if there is one, build in or add shelves down one side for folded clothes, etc. A single rod at the top would accommodate longer clothing and you could hang one of those small hanging rods on a chain off of it to allow for pants and shirts to be hung there. Roman shades will keep the room sleeker than the bulk of curtains or drapes would, especially if they're the same color as the walls. I'd also look for a place to add a nice sized mirror to open up the room even more; one without a bulky frame that would intrude into the room. Anyhoo, I love challenges like this and, with all my siblings and parents living across the country from us, I'm always VERY appreciative of having a private, comfy guest room to stay in, no matter how small it is. Just give me a comfortable bed, a bedside table for my book and a glass, decent sized reading lamp (I hate those too short useless ones!!!), blinds on the windows for privacy and a room devoid of knick-knacks so that I space to put my own things out and I'm a very happy guest!...See MoreHelp! How can I make this small space into our guest bedroom.
Comments (57)Yikes! I didn't know that about pop-up trundles. Good to know so as to avoid them. I wonder if there are different quality ones that might be better? The day bed looks like it might work for kids, but I would hate to be the person in the back who would be up against a wall and have to climb out over the front person. eta: I looked again and it looks like it can be designed so there is no back on it, which might work perfectly, so you can have it away from the wall for access from both sides....See MorePutting Together a "TV/Guest Room/Office" Space
Comments (40)freedomplace1: The home in which you grew up sounds absolutely fabulous! Between its age (nothing like old homes!), and all of that wonderful space... ah, what I wouldn't give for all those rooms right now... haha! I think you may be right - I don't know what we'd keep in a trunk in this room, really - probably some blankets and things like that, certainly nothing the guests would find necessary, as those items would be put on top of the dresser, in plain view for them to use. I was trying to remember the other day, the first time I saw a trunk used as a coffee table. Trunks have, of course, been around for centuries... but I don't remember them used as living room pieces when I was growing up, so even that is a trend, isn't it? Unless I just haven't spent much time around stylish people! l pinkmountain: I know just the tables you mean, and those really do work quite well in small spaces. Your home sounds fabulous - between the handmade, and the inherited items. I tend to like those types of things best. And of course we would end up owning the heaviest pieces when we move around a lot, wouldn't we?! Our huge, heavy, Jacobean inherited dining set has traveled the country with us... and that Horton's piece was with us in two places before we ended up in our current home. Of course now that we aren't going anywhere for a while, it's in storage... ha, the irony! everdebz: Yes, I agree - visually, transitional may work best, and I think the reason that I was looking for a visually lighter piece, is because the navy tones in the room do make it appear heavier. ital mover: That one is fun, I like the round shape and the fact that it has wheels! The only bummer would be the fact that we wouldn't be able to use it as an ottoman. I know, I know, so much to demand of such a tiny space! I did order the throw, however, it seems perfectly color-matched to the room - will post an update when that comes. Thank you! :)...See Moreauntthelma
