How do I get my desktop Icons back?

Hi again,

I thought maybe I needed to post another thread since this is a little different from my last post.

Somehow my desktop backround was changed and what I was seeing was not a blank white screen instead I was actually seeing another backround called Internet Explorer Wallpaper. Once I fixed that I rebooted but still don't have my icons back.

Can anyone tell me how I can get my desktop Icons back?

This all has happened since I downloaded Microsoft updates and I am thinking one of those updates just moved things around. I am not sure about that and I might be wrong but is there a setting I can go to so that I can get my icons back?

I have found a free program from digital support where you can fix things. I will post the link here so that you can look at it and tell me if I should use it or not.

You purchased the house last year so there is, I'm supposing, no information on what the lawn in that area did last year at this time....maybe the same thing you are experiencing. It could be the ground is hard in the area and doesn't accept moisture down to a level that the lawn uses it to its advantage. In other words, maybe the lawn isn't getting water in that area and pays the price. Too much, is as bad as too little. Too much and too little causes short roots which, when the summer heat hits it, dries it up fast. You didn't say whether you fertilize regularly. Turf grass is, like any other plant, needs food. A regular schedule of fertilizing keeps a lawn in good health and even if grubs invade, a turf that is in the best of health can fight it off. I suggest you do an over layering of compost/triple mix or good topsoil...about 1/2" to 1" and do this every spring ....and fall. Then an overseeding at the same times. What this does is builds organic matter into the soil, improves the soil to absorb and hold moisture and results in a tough turf that can stand up to the dry periods or the over-wet times. To find out how much soil/compost to buy, simply measure the area you wish to cover...length times width...IN FEET. Multiply that by the depth IN INCHES the soil you wish to put down...and multiply that figure by 3.....and divide by 1000. The result will tell you exactly, in cubic yards, how much soil to buy. Thus, if you were to cover the entire 1000 square feet with 1" of soil....1000 sq ft X 1" = 1000, then multiply that by 3...= 3000 divided by 1000 = 3 cubic yards of soil would cover the area. By overlayering 1" of soil over the lawn every spring and fall will improve the drainage and water containment quality and improve the lawn's ability to grow grass in difficult times. A good combination of seeds for northern areas is" 40% Kentucky Blue, 30% perennial ryegrass and 30% fescue. This combo makes for a tough lawn that stands up to most what nature throws at it.

Thanks, that's were I was when the Icon became unresponsive and I decided to "exit" it and post here. I had done a properties and gave it only a quick look, seeing something (poor memory) about desktop... then I click (left) on the icon and a small display/dialog box came up showing some thermometer style meters with a horizontal orientation. I couldn't get the display to disappear so I clicked the "exit" button. I have Firefox and Thunderbird and they try to connect add-ons at every update, it seems. I try to cancel the add-ons, I have enough trouble trying to remember all the features of the core application.

I guess that's the risk you take when you install a sink made of a soft, finicky material with a fake finish. Bet it cost a mint, too. :-( That sink really isn't any more functional than the overpriced "stainless steel" refrigerators that are just plain carbon steel coated with a phony stainless-look finish, and the same cheap disposable imported guts inside. If you want it to end up with a normal patina, first you're going to have to scrub the rest of the factory finish off, getting up to the edge and right down into that texture. You'll probably also want to polish it to remove the coarse grit scratches that the BKF left behind. I'd probably try fine buffing compound, the stuff auto detailers use, from a pro auto finish jobber. Stay away from the big name auto cleaners at the chain parts stores, they usually contain silicones or other shine-up residues, and you don't want those. I might also try progressively finer steel wool. Steel's harder than copper. Then just let time and hand washing have their way with it. Clean it with a mild non-abrasive cleaner when the soap scum builds up. That's a bunch of work, though. If it were my house, I'd tear out that bit of conspicuous consumption, and put in a nice normal porcelain-on-steel vanity sink. That would nuke the problem, and make cleaning just about foolproof to boot. Hey, copper's going for around $2 a pound at the scrap yards these days, so you could even get a little of your investment back. :-)

Follow cboy instruction for icons and see if that works- don't download ANYTHING go back to the other post and follow the directions for fixing system restore in the mean time we will look into icon problem if cboy instruction does not work.

I followed your instructions and then I rebooted to make sure those icons would stay in place.

Before I posted here I wanted to make sure that everything was working normal, after I rebooted walla those icons came back. "Smiles"

Thank you so much for your help. This was a simple fix but I didn't know it at the time. I right clicked on the desktop to find that the backround had been changed, so I changed that but I had forgotten how to get the icons back.

I still don't know how the backround got changed and my right clicking on the desktop was a stab in the dark, but when I did that I remembered to check the backround and that is when I discovered that what I was thinking was a white screen turned out to be an internet wallpaper backround. Myself I don't like that even being there, it gives you a false impression of something being wrong because it shows a white screen with gray lines.

Thanks cboy for all of your help and I will post on the other thread a thank you to those who stepped in to help me. I have always trusted this forum for the wonderful help that you all provide.

I would address the restore issue here, try the exercise below this will not fix the Icon issue but you need to get System restore working again.....
System restore may have become corrupted.

Clear restore points.
To turn off system restore> right click on My Computer>Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Turn off System Restore.
Apply.
Click OK.

Restart your Pc >back to System Restore.
Create a restore point.

Create a new restore point, click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
System Restore.

System Restore wizard>Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Name a new restore point.
Click on Create.

one thing that is really important about system restore, if you have an infection on your pc that could be affecting system restore and not letting it restore properly, We never want you to clear your restore points till the pc is fully cleaned of the infection, then once done and the pc is fully clean then you can clear the restore points. The reason being if something goes afoul from the infection or the cleaning then you still at least have a restore point to go back to even if it is infected, that can be worked with, but if you have already deleted all your restore points then you have no options. So always wait, and restore points do cycle out so once the pc is clean the old infected ones will eventually cycle out. But generally the procedure is to clean them out once a system is fully cleaned.

If you are having no problems it is never a good idea to clear your restore points for no reason.
A very good practice is to create a new restore point prior to installing anything new on the pc, in case it messes up you can go right back to that restore point.
