Modern Icons: The Navy Chair
You've probably noticed Emeco chairs in many home design spreads. The Emeco Navy Chair is a true test of form following function, and the resulting form becoming a classic that endures. In fact, when Emeco chairs were originally created for the U.S. Navy during the World War II era, they were designed to endure for at least 150 years. They were also designed to withstand torpedo blasts on warships. I don't know what kind of abuse modern Navy chair enthusiasts are planning on putting their chairs through, but I think it can take just about anything you throw at it.
Another thing that makes Navy chairs great is that they have a feel-good aspect; they are made from 80% recycled aluminum. Recently, they decided to expand the tradition of promoting recycling. Just this year,Emeco produced the 111 Navy Chair. Partnering with Coca-Cola, Emeco has made an effort to increase plastic bottle recycling. Each 111 Navy Chair uses the plastic from 111 recycled plastic bottles. Alright, I don't mean to sound like an Emeco commercial, I'm just a big fan of companies that care about quality and making things better. Without further ado, I present a smattering of classic Emeco chairs in a variety of settings.

A desk is a perfect spot for a Navy chair.
Navy chairs come in dining chair size and in barstool form.
The aluminum chairs can mix and match with a variety of other materials and textures. Here they look great with a wooden table, an upholstered host chair and a paper lantern.
There are also versions of the chair that have arms.
It seems a lot of the spaces on Houzz feature the barstool version. It is hard to find cool barstools isn't it? There don't seem to be a lot of great choices. Maybe I should try to find some for a barstool ideabook? Have you seen any? Let me know in the comments section!
Aluminum chairs fit right in with this contemporary industrial kitchen.
