I've upgraded to IE8 & still no video viewing possible

Thanks, all, for your suggestions, on my "it was working yesterday & now it's not" post. I now have IE8 and still no video YT viewing possible. When the YT home page comes up, the top half shows pictures, the bottom half shows empty squares with a + in the lower left corner. But when you click on any of those, I still get "You must have Java turned off or need to get the latest Adobe Flash Player". I have the latest Flash player. Anything I can try next? GRRRRRRR!!!!!

Just a thought after reading both posts. Before installing the Flash player did you exit the browser completely before installing? Also is Scripting enabled on your computer?

Bob, you know, I can't remember if I closed the browser before installing the shockwave. Also, how do I know if I have scripting enabled. Thanks, Bob.

camp, I didn't realize it either until researching online and on gardenweb. "What are these cabbage lopers of which you speak?" (what the heck is a loper?) ... OHHHHHH, those gross lil green caterpillars I keep seeing. Gotcha! This has been fun to read everyone's input. There are too many gems to point them out individually, but I've learned that not only are garden bloggers really nice and helpful (per thyme2garden) but they are pretty funny, too! It's too bad I try to share the humor with my non-gardening friends and family ... (um, ok, everyone not on here!) and they give me the blank "I don't get it," stare. Such is life. I highly recommend the archived "so you want to grow a gardenia" thread... I read that a few months ago and was CRYING it was so funny. (I didn't even know what a gardenia WAS until that thread.) And it has given me the courage to venture into growing flowers this coming year ... once I make the lasagna beds this fall for spring ... and build a few more trellises ... and flip my compost ... and ask the restaurant down the street for coffee grounds ... and.. and.. and.. :P Oh, btw. The tomatoes are starting (in case anyone was troubled by my plethora of non-ripening tomatoes.) ... The gardening gods like me (at the moment ;) ). Thanks again everyone for sharing - Veronica

Hi, Mikie. Thanks. I guess I will look for a 1.5TB drive (unless I don't find any with very good reviews - I know I've seen some 1 TB drives that get great reviews for around $100). I know I have one open sata port (I did have my computer open last week to take my Tivo original hard drive and copy it to a new 1TB hard drive - with all the snafus this 1- 1/2 hr. project took 8 hours on Saturday - and on and off all Sunday to complete). There is definitely a bay for a second hard drive. I had 2 sata ports but just added an esata cable so I'm using one of those now. I definitely don't have such huge files (maybe 10-15GB at most for a long high-def movie), so I'll look into partitioning the drive (which is an intimidating idea now, but I'll work up to it). I'm not sure what you mean by break-away covers. But this computer comes with an empty slot in front where a firewire port can be. I think this is what you mean by does the faceplate have provisions for it. I've looked through Dell forums. I'm copying the link here: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/18748278.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=04&s=bsd&PageIndex=1 It's amazing that for over a year folks have been trying to add this front firewire port after the face - and most of them cannot get a straight answer from Dell. The variety of responses - including it can't be done, it can only be added to the rear, a suggestion of different needed parts - and then perhaps one answer that seems right - but they got the part number wrong and it took the woman 30 minutes to find the information out. Anyway, I've read through it several times bc. it all seems to unclear. I wish I could have read that several people did the same thing and it worked. But people had different solutions. I think I'll call Dell parts and ask about this one: Part #J4975 ($32.99): * IEEE 1394 PCI Card (all internal cables included) for Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop * One end has FireWire port that will be accessible on front of computer (i.e., via the existing slot) * The other end is the PCI Card (which connects to the motherboard) and also has three additional FireWire ports accessible on back of computer. * Internal cables (included with purchase) connect the two ends. * All four FireWire ports have 6-pin heads. But even that part number is wrong - it's supposed to be Y4975. It sounds like the right thing to me. Then I can just plug in my Lego parts. Dell support is just so uninformed. Back to the hard drive, do I need to get cables as well as the drive? I'm sure I need 1 or 2 cables to connect the drive to my computer - and I'm asking in case that answer is more clear. Thanks. Did anyone see the episode a few years ago in California's wine country? This spoiled, dry, unsmiling couple toured three gorgeous homes, large homes that anyone would consider to be dream homes. The man walked into one of the kitchens, a huge affair with cherry cabinets, granite counters, stainless, etc., and pronounced it very low end. My DH and I were incredulous. If that was low end, what does he consider high end? Titanium appliances? Gold-plated fixtures? Diamond-encrusted cabinets? Sheesh! Also, I don't understand why people need these huge homes. 5000 sq. ft. might seem impressive, but don't you get lost in that? How do you keep it clean? How do you afford the maintenance. Repainting and reroofing a 50000 sq. ft. home is going to be much more costly than a 1500 sq. ft job. Do you really need a separate exercise room, a separate wine room, a separate play room, a separate theater? Don't even get me started on the spoiled 20-somethings who are buying their first home for $500,000 OR MORE and sneer that a perfectly serviceable kitchen or bathroom is a "gut job." My favorite HHI was the one in Slovenia where bees had built a hive in the house (or was it bats?) also the one in Buckinghamshire, England, with the thatched roof.

If you look on the index, where the list of topics is, on the right, just above, and underneath the post a new message area, and right under the GardenWeb has joined Houzz box), you'll see the mode selector. There's a sorting style dropdown menu that let's you choose to sort by latest activity (like on GW), Featured, Popular, and Unanswered. I don't know who or how they determine Featured and Popular, but I bet there's something in there that's making all these old threads pop up! Farther to the right are the three boxes. The leftmost is for the basic index of thread topics, signified by many lines (3 lines). Middle box has two blobs because when you choose that, the entries are thicker. That's the one I was talking about. In the two bars, middle box, "preview" mode, you see the first two lines of the last post on the thread, as well as the last poster's screen name and avatar, and how old the last post is. Plus, the preview of the first picture posted in the OP post. The one solid box, on the far right, gives you the first two lines of the OP post, indented with its picture preview to the left) and the last two replies to it, but with all the threads strung in a row. This is a great way to see if there's anything new in a slow moving forum. It used to show the full threads, I think, but our threads are too long for that. :)

I recently had a video viewing problem but despite installing and uninstalling Flash multiple times my problem continued. Finally I discovered that though I uninstalled Flash, there were still files left on my computer.

I would suggest you uninstall Flash using Adobe's removal tool following their directions:

Reboot.

Do a Search (Start/Search/All Files and Folders) entering "flash" (without the quotes) in the "All or part of the file name" box.

If files are found, go to the file location(s) and manually delete them.

Reboot.

Repeat the search on "flash" again to be sure the only flash files found are now in your recycle bin.

When your search comes up clean, then reinstall Flash.

It took me 2 1/2 days of frustration before I found that the uninstall was incomplete and Flash file remnants were causing my problem.

Hopefully the above will solve your problem as well.

Do you in fact have Java enabled? In IE8, click on Tools>Internet Options. Open the Advanced tab and scroll down to "Use JRE 1.6.0_15" (that's the latest update of Java). Make sure this is checked.

wait you are talking originally about flash and adobe but then you say something about installing the shockwave, those are 3 different programs.
There is Java
There is adobe player
There is shockwave.

you need to make sure you are getting the proper one. If you need java getting shockwave will not help you.
You probably want all 3 of them, and you will want them for each of your browsers you use.

To update your Java go to control panel then to the java icon there it looks like a coffee cup and hit the update button and follow the prompts.
For adobe go to adobe player on your pc and select the update option and follow the prompts to update your player.
For shockwave go to the download page for it and select the proper one for your operating system and browsers.
Install Adobe Shockwave Player
Install Adobe Flash Player
BE SURE to uncheck any added components or options like the McAfee scan on the site listed above and in each download you do be sure you uncheck any checked options for added toolbars or other options you only want the actual player you went there for.

In the steps I outlined in my message of 10/9/2009 at 10:36 AM, I said to search for "flash" files. That is a whoops! Please search for "adobe" and manually delete any files found unless it is obvious they are used by another program (I found an AdobeHookDLL.dll which was in a Program File for Logitech; I did not delete it). - June
