Wallpaper wont display

When I turned on the computer, instead of a picture for the background, itÂs a blue screen.

I change the picture to see if that was the problem, but all I get is a blue screen.

IÂve run all my anti-virus programs and even used an online scanner. They all found nothing.

I then uninstalled and re-installed webshots, thatÂs what IÂm using for a wallpaper program, thinking that maybe it was something between webshots and the computer that may have caused them to stop talking to each other. Still a blue screen.

I got tired of the blue screen so I went to the DISPLAY PROPERTIES screen (right click on the desk top, properties, desk top tab.) The only thing that I couldnÂt click on was the list of backgrounds that came with the computer.

IÂve gone through all my programs that I can think of that might block webshots from working and didnÂt find a thing.

IÂm run MS Windows xp.

Oh, another thing. When shutting down, the wallpaper, flashes on the screen for a second before shutting off.

No real help but go here to see if any wallpaper is listed.
Start - Run - c:windows\web OK
Double click Wallpaper.

OK......... Found the wallpaper folder and the pictures are there.
So it must be running, just not displaying any pictures.
Hmmmmm.

This is getting more and more puzzling, ain't it.

I love wallpaper, and use it often. But I do agree about people who apply multiple layers or paint over it. Doesn't sound like any of you have ever had the challenge we had in this house. I kid you not--I counted carefully--our living room had TWELVE layers of wallpaper, several with pain on them. And we stripped every scrap of it off before doing anything further. One interesting thing I've noticed lately--the houses for sale in the neighboring town (one of the priciest, most 'desireable', most trendy in the country) are mostly showing very, very busy wallpapers lately. Guess it's coming back.

Usually would want either the wall or the rug to be a solid color, especially if the rug is to be a large or room sized rug; however, if you're choosing a rug with two shades of the same color and that color or those colors are in the wallpaper, that could work. With that wall paper, you might consider a muted shade of green for your rug. However, and this would be my preference, IF this is a lady's room and IF the lady likes pink, you might consider a smaller, elongated oval braided rug for beneath the wing back chair (and a very small foot stool) with a muted pink in it, perhaps with a beige/tan color of the adjoining wall or even a pale neutral gray. If there are other colors, as long as they are muted colors or the overall effect of the mix of colors is a muted effect so they compliment and work with the wall paper rather than compete with it for attention. Sorry to hear about your experience. Mine is/was similar. I found several layers of wallpaper, with a skim coat in between, and then under that, it seems to have been applied directly to drywall. I have removed a lot of wallpaper in the past, but I ended up damaging the drywall in one room so badly, we decided to hire someone. I had several contractors come through who looked at the amount of wallpaper and wouldn't do it! One guy was willing and he starts this morning so I will see what magic he uses. If he has any tips, I will share.

Hello all. I’m trying to do a vinyl wall paper that mimics grass cloth like texure. I also don’t want to see seams. The original wallpaper I bought is attached and after reading this thread in worried seams will show because it’s a horizontal pattern. I’ve attached an option 2 and option 3 pattern. It seems because option 2 has a vertical pattern that this will hide the seams. Is that correct? Option 3 im not sure but it’s also a darker wallpaper and the pattern seems to be horizontal and vertical would either of these qualities cause seams to show?

Sorry to butt in, but have you tried deselecting Web shots Wallpaper, closing the photo manager, then selecting it again? I am a huge Web Shots fan ;-)

Yes, I've done that. I even made sure that in the options the 'use webshots as the wallpaper' was turned on. Still have a blue screen.

Why could you not click on those? Were they grayed out? if so there is a registery fix you can download, I can get that for you but I need to know if the background options are in fact "grayed out & un-clickable"

Couple things to try.
Display Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop > Web tab, Uncheck everything there.

Go to Kelly's Korner scroll down to line 142 and in the right-hand column, click on "Allow Background Wallpaper Changes" to download a small .reg file and install it.

I don't think it is a Webshots problem.

Only the word background above the list is grayed out. The list itself seems to be frozen.

Sorry Randy. The only thing it did was to move all the icons to the left side of the screen. So it must of done what it was suppose to, but it must not be the problem I have.

Very strange Randys' link is the one I would have gave you, you can always try a system restore---

Click start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore

Choose a restore point from calender and it will set the computer back to when things were working correctly.

Try Error Checking
1. Start - my computer - Right click Local Disks C - Properties - Tools Tab - Error Checking Section -
Check Now - Check mark both boxes - Click Start.
This will start when you Restart your computer. It take about 35 minute on mine. 5 parts and the last 2 takes
the longest.

2. Try a screen change this way.
Right click Desktop - properties - Desktop Tab - Customize -
Web Tab - New - Browse - Right click a picture -
Click Select - OK - OK - Apply - This picture will be small in aize but can be increased to cover the Desktop.
It can be most any size you want.

Looks like if you go to webshots support and read the faq they will tell you two files which are probably corrupted to delete.

I now know why the computer is doing what itÂs doing.
After trying a restore point, error check and all the rest of the fixes with no effect, this is what IÂve come up with.

The computer thinks that the background belongs in front and the foreground belongs in the back. This might explain why I canÂt pick a background from the display properties screen even though I should.

It also explains why when shutting down I can see the webshots picture for a second. ItÂs not suppose to be of webshots, but of the blue background. And I know webshots is running OK because during the error checking the screen saver came on and ran as normal.

So the question is, how do I tell it to switch the background and the foreground back to where they are suppose to be?

At the bottom you will see Line 97
Wallpaper (Folder) Background

Background for folders: To create a template folder with a background image, create a new folder and customize it to create a hidden desktop.ini file inside. Edit the desktop.ini in the folder and add two lines:

IconArea_Image=Background.bmp

Then create a hidden image file in the folder and name it "Background.bmp". This image can be .bmp, .jpg, or .gif, but you will need to edit the image file extension in your desktop.ini file to match the image file name.

Wallpaper - Desktop - Disable Changing

Allow Wallpaper/Background Changes - Disable

Manual: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop. NoChangingWallPaper
DWord value: 1 prevents changing wallpaper, 0 allows changes.

The same value can be created in the following Registry branch, to make the restriction machine wide.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop

Wallpaper - Users

To modify the wallpaper for every new user added to the machine.. and has the added benefit of showing up during log on:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. In the right pane change to path to Wallpaper.

Thanks cboy, the screen change worked. Now I don't have to look at a blue screen.
I'll also try the other things this weekend and see if they don't work as well.

I think it is odd system restore did not work, after all it restores the registery back, and Kellys' corner should have worked too. Need to focus on getting those background options to work the ones provided by windows first.

I saw your question regarding the Webshot wallpaper only displayed for a split second but the regular desktop was blue. I have the same problem but I am still unable to get it reverse from the background to the foreground. The Kellys-korner only displayed the text format which I don't know how to implement it to windows. Did I miss anything or misinterpreted it somewhere along? Can you email me direct with the fix? Thanks.

You copy the text format at kelley's korner and paste it into notepad, then save as .reg
Any name will do as long as you save as dot reg
This will create a reg file that when you open will merge into the registry and replace or add the correct key.
