Wireless router help

I feel like an idiot for asking this, since I feel the answer is probably obvious.

I upgraded to a wireless router when my wife got her HP laptop with built-in wireless card. I have it working fine, until we turn off the wireless connection by pushing the button on the laptop to conserve battery power. When we later turn the wireless button back on, it will not connect to the internet, even though it says it has detected the network. Only rebooting the computer solves the problem.

Is there something not set right somewhere, or is this just the way the (router/network card/HP computer) works? It would be nice to connect to the internet only when needed without having to reboot the computer.
