Three DW repairmen - Bosch now worse off than before.

Bosch - SHE43 model, about $600 from Lowe's in 2008.

Top rack not washing at all (bottom rack seemed to be getting clean). First two DW repairmen were worthless. One was an idiot, 2nd said I needed a part, 3rd was an "authorized" Bosch repair guy who Bosch sent out and said that supposed part recommended by 2nd guy didn't exist.

He poked around in the bottom of the dishwasher and pulled out some mushy paper bits (I guess from a label) and said "aha." Then flushed out all the extra soap....then left and said the problem was solved.

Now DW not heating in addition to not getting anything clean - everything's greasy. No sanitizing. Even when it wasn't washing top rack, it was still getting hot as usual and sanitizing light would come on. Now it's cold. It also added about 1.5 hours (at least) to the regular wash cycle. I started the DW at about 10:30 am and was still going when I left the house at 2pm.

I have not had a working DW for a month now.

So I will be on my 4th service call once I call Bosch in the morning. Do I still hang in there with this Bosch? There aren't really any better alternatives out there, are there? Kenmore??

I've had a Maytag - hated it. Had an Amana - fully broken down after 2 years.

I can't afford a Miele. I'd be afraid to sink all that money in and get another fancy pricey CR recommended piece of junk.

three_daisies thanks for sharing and I am so sorry for your heartache with the dishwashers all not performing like they should and not lasting.

I had a similar problem with my KA DW. It was not getting the top rack clean at all. The repairmen did things similar to what yours did, but then on the fourth service call (I got the extended warranty- thank goodness) the service guy really took on the challenge of being the one who fixes it. He took the DW outside and took it apart and found the problem to be a broken small rubber back flow valve that would never have been found unless it had been taken apart. This was causing the dirty water to go back in. This guy was so proud of himself and he was just a young kid. So, I think you should insist on having your DW disassembled so the problem can be found. Just my 2 cents! Stay strong! :)

I emailed Bosch because I couldn't get through on the phone. Always on hold for an hour or more and eventually had to give up. This was the response I received: Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We can send you a lower rack wheel replacement kit, which includes wider wheels that have been redesigned to improve the stability of the lower rack. We have owned three Bosch DW's to date, the oldest of which we have had for perhaps 10 years now. Regarding capacity, I have not seen any significant loss of capacity versus the generic GE we had prior to buying the most recent Bosch. We have a family of four with two teenagers, so our use is probably less than a family with small kids using sippy cups etc but it's more than adequate for daily use. We do have a second Bosch currently in the basement which we use for spillover, mainly after entertaining. The comment about "drying overnight" is ridiculous. Yes, Bosch like other European manufacturers uses residual heat rather than an electric heating element to dry. It works well for glassware and silverware. Tupperware and other plastics are often still damp to wet, and we will sometimes put them on a drying rack before storing. The typical length of a cycle, including drying, is about 90-100 minutes. If you take dishes out as soon as the cycle is over, everything is dry except the plastic ware. Certainly there is absolutely no need to wait "overnight" to get things dry. Reliability has been generally good. We had to replace one circuit board but it was my fault (spilled a glass of apple juice directly down the vent in the door). The soap dispenser is somewhat fragile--on the 10 year old model it pops off the track if you push it too hard, so I'm careful to close them correctly (push door til closed, then push DOWN on the back of the door to lock the door--don't just keep pushing harder and harder to get it to lock). Overall they are very nice machines. Quite quiet, although interestingly the newer ones are a bit louder than the oldest one. Confession--for our ongoing renovation, we are actually getting two Miele Excellas--but that's mainly for the crystal capability and the fully integrated look.

I have a lower cost Bosch DW (white, tall tub, external controls) about a year old. It replaced a terrible Amana that sounded like a jet engine when it ran. I got really tired of not being able to hear the TV in the next room! The pros: pretty quiet, seems to clean well. Dries okay. Love how simple the controls are. Really like the stainless interior. Doesn't seem to need a food disposal after all (I was skeptical). Cons: SMELLS BAD. I rinse my dishes really well anyway before loading but there's something about the interior (maybe the stainless steel?) that traps odors big time. It smells like something is dead in there and I'll have to run a load that's not even full just to eliminate the stink (the "rinse" cycle doesn't help all that much). I've never had that happen in any dishwasher before. It happens fairly consistently in this Bosch. Now I rinse everything about 4 times before putting it in b/c I'm paranoid! I have check the food grate thing at the bottom of the DW all the time, but that's never been the source of the smell... FWIW, I went to a neighbor's house yesterday to see her kitchen and she has the stainless version of my Bosch DW. She doesn't like hers because she says it smells AFTER the clean cycle has run (never happened to me) and that the dishes don't dry at all so they have to crack the door for awhile before unloading. That hasn't happened to me either. One more con - a design flaw. Bosch made the grate openings on the bottom rack so large that you can't put smaller items (like cups or small bowls) on the bottom. Too bad - because you can put plastic anywhere since there's no heating element. Poor design, IMO. I deal with a lot of small cups and sippy cups with three small kids so that has been annoying for me. Overall, it works as it should and even though I have gripes, I'm not replacing it in the new kitchen since it's so new...

I've had a Miele for 10 years - no problems other than it etches my glassware which I did a lot of research on when it happened right from the start and there was no solution other than using the China and Crystal cycle any time I had any glassware in it. I also seem to be the only person who has had that problem. All in all though since I can only use one cycle and would never put any good glassware in it, it was far overpriced for the features I use. I have a rather basic 12 year old Bosch at another house and really like it - works great, no problems. Both are very quiet which I love. I recently moved out of the MIele house and will need to replace my 15 year old dishwasher there that sounds like a jet engine. I will get a Bosch.

Thanks. I do have to add that even though I am intensely disappointed in the dishwasher, the Bosch folks have been fairly pleasant and responsive - and were able to schedule a repair call pretty quickly (w/in 48 hrs) of my call. Now, if they can send someone who can actually fix the problem instead of making the DW worse, I'll be much happier.

And - one last bonus, the Bosch guy who came on Friday did NOT blame ME for the DW not working (e.g. not enough Jet Dry, too much detergent, not rinsing dishes, etc.). I think that's a first for me!

Since the techs are finding debris in the d/w here are a couple things to try yourself.
1.)Remove both spray arms and run the d/w throught a quick rinse. Make sure the filter is securely in place. This will flush out anything left in the water system. While the rinse is running closely inspect the arms to make sure they are free of debris.
2.) check your drain line under the sink to make sure a high loop is there. Without the high loop the d/w drain pump will not pump correctly. While checking the drain line pull on it to see if it was left coiled behind the machine. This will mean the drain hose didn't have the high loop installed correctly. The hose should be pulled completely through the cabinet hole with none left behind the machine. Sometimes if a tech pulls out the unit the high loop doesn't get reinstalled after they are through.

If you do have another tech out have him look at the check valve next to the drain pump impeller to make sure it's not stuck or blocked.

Also--Remove the plastic tower that carries water to the top shelf and check it for stress cracks along the seam. (Happened to mine.)
