My Documents help

I know that when I type something and want to save it, it will show up, BUT why do I get things that I don't type such as sort a list from Office----desktop icons and if I go to remove it , I get a messaage this part of my computer won't work. By the way, this shows up both on my documents and my recent documents--quickon icon--same thing

I am having difficulty understanding this. Is this problem you are experiencing a recent development, or has it always been happening? What is the EXACT MESSAGE that says "part of my computer won't work"? Are you trying to save an Office (Word) document or something else? Which version of Office are you using?

Don't try to remove it, just cancel out and try to save again.

To simplify things for you I have copied a fix that I found at Kellys Korner which is a genuine and highly regarded source of tips and fixes for all sorts of problems. Number 255 on the right hand side of the page is labelled "My Documents Folder Opens Upon Boot (for C:\)" and gives the code that I have copied below. It is a Registry Patch that simply puts the correct value back where it belongs. Open Notepad on your computer then copy and paste the text into it and save the file as USERINIT.REG - that's USERINIT dot REG Now double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. Incidentally, REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit. Ok. I guessed wrong on IE. I should have noticed that the directory name was slightly different. I just tried it using Chorme and the directory is a web page saved in Chrome, not IE. Chrome saves the files in snopes.com Microsoft AOL Giveaway.htm_files IE saves them in C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Green\My Documents\snopes_com Microsoft-AOL Giveaway_files If you didn't save the web page, somebody else did. What's the date/time stamp on it? Maybe it was long enough ago that you forgot doing it.

If you draw a section through the house you will be able to note almost everything and avoid a written specification the builders are likely to ignore. Make it large enough to easily read. It would show and note the framing heights, framing member sizes, anchors, tie downs, rafter clips, typ. header, insulation, weather barrier/vapor retarder/drainage plane, attic access, roofing, gutters, attic ventilation, ext. cladding, interior finishes & trim, crawlspace & ventilation, slab, vapor retarder and crushed stone under slab, foundation materials and depth and drainage. Framing plans would probably not be necessary. I would use 1/2" Huber Zip wall sheathing to eliminate housewrap or if you want to fuss with that stuff use Tyvek or Typar (no substitutions). 5/8" OSB or plywood roof sheathing, Ice & Water Shield full coverage (there would only be a small portion not covered after using it on the eaves, valleys and ridge). The window flashing would be a butyl based flexible tape (Tyvek Grace, etc. - I don't like to use asphalt based flashing on plastic although it seems to be done routinely. The windows seem small. I would at least lower the sills a foot. This would be a major improvement for a reasonable cost.

I knew I would make it difficult and I am sorry. But I guess what I am trying to say, is I am getting things in My Documents that I did not put there, such as Office showing up when I did not put it there. Sorry.

Word saves in My Documents by default. You need to go to Tools and Options to find where to change the location you wish to save your Word documents to. I have Office 2007 so I cannot give you the exact path on an earlier version.

Many programs, including Office, save files to the My Documents folder by default. If you click "save" and then "ok" they'll end up in My Documents. After you click save you can navigate to another folder if you choose and subsequent saves of that document will end up there as well. If you want to change the default folder, you will have to do that on a application by application basis, generally under something like Settings in the tool menu.

As far as my experience MK has it correct. When you save a document select the location you wish to save it to. Office should from that time on save to the new location until you change it again.

My Documents is the default location for many things if you have not changed the path for where to specifically send them so it is not unusual for things to show up in there that you may not remember putting there.
