You can buy the new range for $1200, right? That's not enough of a savings to warrant a 10 year old appliance with no warranty. I'd offer no more money than you can afford to lose. Suppose mice have taken up residence in the base of the range?

People selling older appliances are lucky to get 10% of retail price, in which case, this should be worth about $3500.

I agree, too much money for a hand-me-down. If they can afford a new one,(and there was nothing wrong with the old one) then they can sell it to you for a nominal price.

If you were buying new, I would not get a Viking.

id tell you this is a bit better than the current viking ranges but i agree at 10 years its not worth much more than $750

try to locate the Model # & serial # - ?inside the door or it may be you need to lift the top off the range
You can then contact Viking to request any service history on that particular range

For the most part - not much has changed w/technology of all gas ranges - The most critical thing on that would be the electronic ignitors - that may be right around the time Viking went to el ignitors

If possible I would have a reputable appliance svc person check the range out

I have a 36" AG range & Love it, but Viking is a product people love to bash here...

I have a 36" Viking gas range that was purchased new in 1995. I would definitely get the serial number and call Viking about parts availability. You should be able to find a label with the serial number underneath the burner cover on the left hand side. Remove the grates, remove the bowls around the burners then lift up on the cover close to the front of the range. (The back portion slides into a tab and the front snaps into place.)

In my case, Viking doesn't even recognize my range's serial number. The label is clean and clear but Viking keeps suggesting that "maybe some numbers rubbed off". Not sure how they thinks that's possible since the label is hidden and nowhere near a moving part that would "rub" off a digit or two, but they've got nothing in their system that matches the serial number.

I can tell you that burner knobs for the range are NO longer manufactured. Viking redesigned the knobs at some point (maybe eight years ago?) and I have been unable to get a replacement for a broken burner knob that is in the old style. I was able to get a replacement oven and griddle knob, but I've been repeatedly told that burner knobs are simply not available.

one of the things i notice when i was doing some research on the web over the weekend is that there is a lot of unhappy customers that bought viking stove in the last few year and they had to spend a lot of money on pro repair people and parts, plus my kitchen is small and i'm just going to have micro hood and that want be enough venting for the viking range.

so it sound like i better of buying a new gas range that will just work.

Ten year old Viking, should be good for a few more years, but don't look to the long term. Our 18 year old 30 inch open burner model is falling apart from rust. Gas tubes and burners are crumbling. I don't think it will be safe to use it much longer.

Don’t write off an old Viking. I’m renovating my kitchen and decided to buy a new Wolf range for resale. I’ve had my Viking range for 23 years now and I’m really sad to see it go. I can’t bear to simply throw it away. It is still a powerhouse and has been consistently reliable and performs like a pro even after all these years. I bought my Viking when they were top notch (1996). I know Vikings manufactured in later year had many problems. I personally think the old Vikings are probably better than anything on the market now. I’ve had the same repairman for all these years and he loves to work on my Viking because it is easy to fix and the repairs have been minimal. Never had an issue with a part not being available. Over 23 years I’ve only had to replace igniter switches, door hinges 1 time, and the broiler igniter. That’s it. Very reliable and I cook every day multiple times a day. If you can find an old one, buy it.

My 30 year old viking works great. Easy to get parts on the web, and easy to work on. HUGE oven capacity, hot burner, what else does one need? I’m looking for an old used one to refurbish for my kid. Fun little project. Be aware that the igniters are a slow-fail item and need to be replaced when you notice the oven taking forever to heat. It’s easy, but spring for the authorized part. Cheap ones fail again soon.

Just purchased a home with a 1989 Viking 36” open burner range. Oven door doesn’t seal completely, and appears that the right side door hinge is bent a bit from years of use. Anyone have any experience repairing door hinges on a vintage model like this with the single spring closure design versus the newer design with springs on both hinges? I have a Viking 36" - 6 burner - black enamel, gas cooktop (drop in) that works perfectly and in great condition AND appearance. Knobs are perfect, too. I'm in So. Calif. - what would be a fair asking price? Prob. installed in early 2000 teens - 2011 -12? Not sure.

condition except the Infrared broiler does NOT work. I don't broil so never bothered to have it fixed. Could be as simple as an igniter. Has two new rear burners. Looks new. Has all knobs, just forgot to put one back on after washing. Over the years, have replaced knobs, spider grates and grate supports so those are in great condition. All replaced parts are OEM. One owner. Stove located in Knoxville, TN.
