find file- now it's worse- can't download Adobe Reader9

OK- Now I am really frustrated! I called Florida Agriculture, and they pointed me to the site I want (not the way I first found it, but 'oh well'. The site says I have to download Adobe Reader 9. Well- I read the article the other nite... so I stsrt to download Adobe Reader9, and it says that the program is already being used- what does that mean, and how will I view things that need Adobe Reader9? Thanks.

go to start all programs and look in your list of programs for which version of Adobe you have, you can open the version from there and use the update button to check for updates.

I would suggest getting the updates that way or going directly to the Adobe site and NOT using a pop up link on any website that says it is an update that is a known method of infecting a pc misleading you into thinking you are getting a legit update when in fact it installs malware.

Unless you are emotionally attached to AR or the site absolutely mandates it, I personally haven't found one yet as all they traditionally do is recommend, you might want to rethink installing or updating to AR v9.0. Beginning with AR v6.0 the application has become more system intensive requiring more resources. I do not know about v9.0, but v7.0 and v8.0 are terribly difficult to remove from your system if you ever so decide to.

The free application Foxit Reader has been the recent .pdf viewer being recommended here and at other forums. All you have to do is install it and configure it to be the default reader. It is low resource demanding and from my readings a snap to remove.

I dont have it installed so I cant look to see where it starts from at boot but it would be in the registry under one of the Run keys, or it might be in all users or maybe user start up folder which maybe have it listing under Start/All Programs/StartUp. That link in your graphic is on your start menu & is just that, a link, to lauch the program manually - Acrobat runs in the background since the past few versions because so many people had complained it takes too long to start. As you can imagine, that large of a program doesnt just pop to attention when needed if they don't partially load it at boot.

Well if you had success with Malwarebytes perhaps it is not necessary to run Superantispyware. If you would care to try then as you start the computer keep tapping the F8 button and a screen will appear with start up options. Select safe mode, everything will look totally different to the normal startup because only essential drivers have been allowed to start. My concern was the fact you mentioned AVG was not running properly. That is a good indicator of trouble. On reading the initial post a second time it appears you overcame that issue

Obviously...whatever is going on...it's not simple. As you didn't post what system you have...any pertinent facts about it...what version of Windows you're running...what anti malware/anti virus programs you're running...I'm really at a loss what to advise you at this point, Shaddy. Actually...my best advice would be to send you to a computer repair shop that you know and trust. Recommendations are difficult because I know nothing about your geographic location. I live in the northeast and wouldn't hesitate to use the local Staples computer repair service if my private source was no longer available...or if I couldn't root out and correct the problem myself. But beyond that...I'm of little help. The fact that all your PDF files are now zipped is a concern. I do hope that you have backed up your files...have them stored in a secondary location. The corrective answer to your systems problem may be simple. You could have a series of unrelated small glitches that together are causing a major issue but it's nearly impossible to discover it or them and/or help with it given the information known so far...and not being able to have a hands-on approach. I could recommend that you do a clean install of whatever Windows [or other] program you're using...if you have the original program disk...but in doing so, you'll lose all your files. If you've backed them up prior to this...you can always add them back into your system once you've done the re-installation. I'm sorry, Shaddy...but I suggest the best approach now is to seek hands on professional assistance if you don't want to re-install your system.

I agree unless you really have to have Adobe you might want to try foxit reader, the basic one is a free download.

to check out other alternatives you can look here at gizmo's site where they list known good free programs, in the viewer comments you will find other options listed also.

Another way around, perhaps, is to put the URL in a Google search. Often, but not always, there will be a link to open as HTML. This may or may not be readable as is, but you can select all and copy and, if it is not too large, paste in word and it is quite readable.

Now all of this sounds dreadfully tedious and riddled with "if" but once you have done it it is actually rather straightforward.

Hmmm. I hadn't thought about it possibly being a fake site. That would make sense, as I read the article a couple days before.
I will try to download the Foxit.
And thanks all for the sites to make me more aware.
