Yesterday,while googling "how to locate driver for my printer,

I found help via a tutorial. Real legit looking,like from Microsoft & HP."You can find driver & install the hard way & risk screwing up computer" "or do it the easy way.Click here ".Like a dummy,I clicked.I realized my mistake soon as I see "click here for complete scan of your PC."

This is installed & I cannot remove it. If I try to uninstall

it says "caution you will be removing all drivers on this computer.This scares me & I hit cancel It is called Utilities Driver Update ,.Co. is SlimWare

How can I get this off?

First try running a full scan with malwarebytes and also with superantispyware.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Win) - Detecting and Removing Malware

SUPERAntiSpyware

Then also check in your add remove programs to see if you see it listed there to do a removal.

Wow. So glad I posted. I didn't even realize the rootkit thing was a big issue (and I'm not sure that's what I saw). Avast was scanning - and it didn't even come up with the usual alarming "found something" screen. It just seemed to pause and said this had to be stopped/removed first. It never even showed up as an infected file. So it seems I have to deal with this rootkit issue first - before the possible device driver issue - or system restore. Is it possible that this rootkit issue is the only one going on? Thank you for the caution about not using my password. I didn't do any online purchases. The only password I would have entered was for my gmail account. Luckily I don't use that password for my commerce, banking, etc accounts. So I want to be sure the order of things: update and run malwarebytes first? then do the LzD removal? I'm not sure if that's an online scan program - or is there actually a company I will be asking assistance from? Don't know if this is related. Earlier today when I was using the computer (my main PC) do look at emails, it logged me out and said my gmail was locked and would be inactive due to too much activity (from pop accounts) - or browser compatibility issues (I have Firefox and have had some gmail/Firefox issues from time to time). As it happens, I can still access my gmail account from my laptop. I didn't try again from my PC - and itseems that I shouldn't for now. Now I had also used my gmail from my laptop, my daughter's pc and my smartphone - all just today. I assumed that's why I got logged off. But could this be a result of my gmail account getting hijacked (or whatever it would be?). Thanks everyone for your timely responses. I didn't realize it was quite this serious when I first posted - just that my PC said it was serious. Lynn. PS - used2bsane - I am not that knowledgeable so your instructions above were great and much needed. It seems that I have to address the rootkit issue first, however. Okay. So I'm feeling reassured. I'll back up my data files again. Is there a simple command to back them all up at once - or a whole group at once. I'm sure the instructions are simple, but I've never done it. Grandms - I don't save most email, but I do save some. Some that are from a professional organization I'm on the Board of. Others that might include professional recommendations (plumbers, petsitters, etc) - things like that. I'm on a couple of listservs that often have very useful compilations of resources and professional recommendations.

Really should use the uninstaller & a reboot before deleting left over files & folders. When you install a program, most will write data to the registry.. the programs configurations. Which might include some items that run at startup. If you leave the registry items by deleting just folders rather than runing its unistaller - which will delete most registry items,, you may or may not discover at start up or at other times, errors when the registry tries to access some file you deleted. And with some programs, it might be a major error.

Mary Lu, it wasn't you at all; just me trying to do too much :~) I basically just followed Camp56 and Ideefixe's instructions and it worked! I can't thank you both enough for taking the time to walk me through it!! Rose: the thumb drive idea is a good one for future problems. I never would have thought of that. Thanks! Olychick: you know, I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea about that Restore feature. In the past, whenever I've had a problem DH has fixed it for me. I need to be more proactive. Allison: thanks for those recommendations. WIP: yes, they use a small outside IT firm; nobody in-house except DH. I was going to call them next if I couldn't find a solution here. Oakley: you're kidding?!? I made a mistake earlier saying that I deleted Norton, it was MacAffee, which I've had for quite a while. It ran every day, scanning for problems but never found a one . . . and I KNEW something was wrong before all of this. That's why I was looking for anti-virus programs. Hmmmmm. Graywings: Thanks! I'd forgotten that GW even had a computer forum and had never checked it out. But, I will definitely keep it on mind for future problems. Chickadee: Haha . . . that's for sure! Should be a legit program. Not sure why it's saying that it will "uninstall all drivers from this machine" I think it scans for outdated drivers or something.

I would question where you got it from and could it be a type of rogue or have something that came with it. I looked up reviews for that driver update program and there are a lot of negatives on it, most say not worth it.
I am not familiar with it at all.

I don't use any type of driver update program myself.

Good freeware driver updater, but not infallible.

Everyone, This is what Zep showed.I was able to uninstall in my programs list.But it is still on my bottom right bar. If I click, there is an uninstall option. If I click uninstall,a box saying Do you want to uninstall drivers? This will cause your entire computer to stop functioning. Yes or No. Of course I hit no. I just got my computer working well LOL.
So,the burning question is,should I click yes?

Leave it alone for now. Is there any way you can give me the download link so I can download it and fool with it. Can you see the file running in the task manager? I'd love to see the name of it.

If you can't tell what file it is in the task manager, would you follow the directions below:

Listproccess
A very small program that simply lists the processes that Task Manager lists, including the full path name so you can see what program they are part of.

Download ListProcesses for Windows from here Click Here when the box opens, click on save file, save it to the desktop, once there double click and choose run.

Once it opens select Get List at the top in red. Then at very bottom on left click Copy. Then come back here to this thread and right click in the reply box and choose paste. That will copy the list to the forum so we can see the process running.

Those are all normal. I was hoping to see an exe that would be related to the Icon you have by the clock.

Is there a way you can provide a link to what you downloaded? So I can download it too.

Gotta ask this one. Have you rebooted the system since you did the uninstall? I ask as the uninstaller from some applications require a restart to complete the removal process.

Download and install WinPatrol. Review the reports on the Startup and Services tabs. Pay close attention for software entries in the Title column which include wording as to the application of concern and the word tray. Do not delete any entries only disable them. I share this as there might be an orphan entry remaining from the uninstall.

Finally, if you use CCleaner run the Registry Tool. After the report is complete check for any application orphan entries. Do not remove them at this time. Just jot them down and share them on your thread.

I want to thank everyone for giving me ideas on removing this. Actually,I probably removed it myself.dammcoy hit it! I had failed to reboot after doing the uninstall. Failing to reboot was the issue in some of my other computer troubles. So,I learned good lessons from all of you. Doris
