KB 2345886 failed to install

All 12 updates installed okay for me including the one RC noted as having problems. It did take awhile though as my practice of only doing 2 or 3 updates at a time was once again the norm. I did save the Malicious Software Tool for last as a stand alone because of the time involved for it to do it's thing.

Glad you brought up the MST Bob as I haven't seen the disclaimer for it here in a long time. So here it goes.

When installing an update for the Malicious Software Tool during the installation process the tool will do an entire scan of the user's system so the installation may take some time. Don't unnecessarily worry or become impatient as again it does take some time. It is for this reason alone that I, like Bob, install it separately.

As far as the other updates, I also do them in groups and had no problems. Excluding the MST and the Cumulative IE update I only had ten here on my reliable Vista SP2.

I thought I read somewhere that many of this release group were system generic, and more dedicated to servers than anything else.

Back in my anti-Microsoft days I tried Linux. They said you couldn't crash Linux. Hah, what did they know. :-)

At the time I didn't think it was quite ready for prime time. Haven't played with it for years, maybe it's better now.

Another Mac-user having warm fuzzy feeling.

I downloaded four of the updates, including the MST and the IE one. Got the instruction to restart, so clicked on that. However, the restart only got as far as loading my wallpaper and then stopped. Did a hard shutdown and tried rebooting, but the same thing again. I then booted into Safe Mode, did a system restore to the prior day and then was able to boot up normally. The downloads had not installed because of this hangup. I went ahead and downloaded the rest of the updates and this time all installed normally, and I have had no other problems.

Thank goodness for Safe Mode and system restore.

Had as many as 18 updates (a whole hockey sock full) on my Vista and Win7 laptops..I do have MSOffice 2003 so that contributed a few as well...installed them in groups of 5 and rebooted after each group install, had no problems

Please enjoy your Mac. I do mean that. However, the sound you are hearing is the clock counting down as it is only a matter of time before the degenerates strongly focus on your O/S. They have always attacked Windows due to its inexcusable vulnerability, which is decreasing, and its huge advantage in market share. Meanwhile they are attacking Firefox, Java, Adobe products just to name a few.

damccoy.....I have no doubt that's true. On the other hand, the same (and likely very true) warnings were swarming about 4 1/2 years ago when I bought it, too. And for years before that.

FWIW, I had to update my aunt's computer for her (HP laptop - XP SP3) and did all 14 updates (35 mb worth) in one, big gulp. No problems here ! :-)

I only download/install the high priority items. Should I be doing the optional ones also?

I have only been notified of 2 updates.. Java & flash..is there more I should have? In add/remove..Abobe flashplayer is 10 & java is 6 update 22.
Is that right? If there is more I should have what are they & where do I get them? I haven't had a windows update for quite awhile.
BTW I am still using Windows XP.

Shirley I do the critical and recommeneded. I don't do the optional ones.

Sugar... you would need to click on your windows update to see what updates are available. Do you have your computer set to automatically download and install? If so you should change your setting to notify you first. Your other two programs are up to date.

Boy am I lost now..I went to windows updates & it said I needed to install the latest update software.. I clicked install & got the message below...do I need to be in IE for
updates to work? I use FireFox.
Where do I change it to NOTIFY ME FIRST? How do I know which ones I need?
The 2 I did today did not auto download & install.
When it comes to updates I am totally lost. Well I am lost about a lot of things on this machine but do try & want to keep it secure..
I have NOT read the self helps as it is late & I need to get to bed.. I check it out tomorrow if I need to do it.

And I smile at my Ubuntu Linux system :) It regularly gets security upgrades on various things, as fast as they come out.

And it's a really easy to set up system. Try the Live CDs and see if you like it. Just load and run the CD and you can play with Linux, or open a browser and do on-line banking with 100% safety. No password sniffer can infect the CD no matter what sites you browse.

Unix/Linus/BSD are secure by design - unless you have physical control of the hardware it is hard to get access to anything but a single user's account. And that user is not the admin.

sugar_fl you must use IE to go to the windows update site it will not work with firefox.

Which version of xp do you have? is it sp2 or sp3?

in xp you should be able to go to start> all programs and see at the top windows update if you click on it you should be taken to the update site using IE. click on custom and have it scan the pc it will then tell you what critical updates you need those are the ones you need to download and install.

to find the settings for windows updates in xp
go to start> control panel> automatic updates> double click>there you will see your options first one is automatic which means it will find them and download and install them with out telling you. the one I use is 3rd which says notify me but don't automatically download or install them.
That way when it pops up down in the task bar saying I have updates I am able to view them and decide if I want to do them then or wait to see if there are reports of any problems from any of them etc. you would have to click the apply ok at the bottom of that box if you make changes.
