go to control panel and then go to the java icon there looks like a coffee cup, click on the update button, follow the prompts, you probably have your pc set up to send downloads to a specific location, you need to know where that location is or you need to change that option to ask you each time so that you can select where you want each download to go to, that is how I set mine up so that I can control where they are saved to. I would think it might send them to your My Downloads folder or to your desktop.

Once the download is completed if you can not find it you can do a search on the pc for the file name.

RC, I tried that already, I cannot find anywhere the Java cup, I know what it looks like, it's just not there, and I looked before I did all the uninstalls. It was one of the things I tried from the list of things on the Java website help sections. I have found the Java update but I get the same results.

I have tried to change the location where the download files are sent. but the file still is not in the location I designated.

then do a search on the pc for the name of the file, it will find the file and tell you where it is, when you find it double click it to do the install.

Looked on desktop and everywhere else, search just won't bring up any exe. although there is some java stuff that does comes up but nothing that will connect and finish a download and update.

I did finally get an error message,- ERROR 1723, something about DLL. I'll have to investigate further, had company this weekend and had to wait on this little problem.

That's a windows installer error. Lets clean out all Java files first. Try running the javaRA program below then reinstall java see if error persists. After that we can address the windows installer error there is a clean up utility for that.

Save it to the desktop then extract it to it's own folder.
 Open the folder and run Dial-a-fix.exe
 2 windows will open. Close the one in the background labeled Restrictive Policies
 Check the box in section 1, Empty temp folders.
 Check the box in section 2, Fix Windows Installer.
 Check the box in section 3, Fix Windows Update.
 Check the box in section 4, labeled SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography. The 4 boxes under it should be pre-checked
 Check all boxes in section 5, labeled Registration Center.
 Click Go
 OK any error messages if received, but write them down and post them here.
 Restart the computer when done.

zep516, tried to download the javaRA and it did basically the same thing as trying to download the JavaJRE, that is it shows a box for download but only gives a choice of 'save file'-does not give a choice of run or save. Then when I click on 'save file' and it looks like it's downloading for a second or two then a window pops up from the tray that says that download was complete. When I do a search from the start menu the only JavaRA I can find does not have an .exe, only has .zip file,[whatever that is].

Same thing with the Dial-a-fix-download, only has a .zip file, no .exe. It will not download.

Right click the zip file. Then extract it to the desktop. Try it.

Also click start, then documents, see if a download folder might be there.

Already checked the document folder, nothing there but the Java .zip files described above.

I sent the dial-a-fix zip file to desktop but it will not open. When I right click on it, the top word is READ, where usually it says OPEN. It also says, in the list under READ,: Scan with AVG....then next on the list is:
Open with..........Adobe Reader 9.0

But when I try to open with Adobe Reader I get another error message that says "Adobe Reader cannot open .....because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged..."

Did you by chance upgrade your FF to v3.53? Knowingly or automatically? If so, did this coincide with the onset of you concerns?

damcoy, yes I just checked and I do have version 3.5.3 as you say. And yes it seems to be about that time that I noticed the problems....

I haven't read the posts and articles to determine their content, but I have seen where users have been voicing displeasure with v3.5.3. Maybe?

Perhaps you might want to delete v3.5.3 and reinstall v3.5.2 until things are cleared up. A link to that version and other prior versions is below.

Yes of course try IE.

it sounds to me like everything is downloading properly and is showing the download completed dialog box pop up but you just do not know where to find where the items have been sent to on your pc. As zep stated go to the zip file you saved and double click on it to extract the file simple as that. YOU must find the location of where you have your pc set to save your downloads.

IE will give you the run or save dialog box Firefox will not it only gives you the save file dialog box and you must have it set up where to save your files to. To find out where you have yours set to go do this in firefox: Tool>options>MAIN tab> under downloads area make sure you have a check mark in Show the download window when downloading a file: Next is the option to select where the file goes, this is where your files will be going if you have a selection there in that box. You can change that to desktop or where ever you want the files to go to. OR you can put a check mark in the next item which is Always ASK ME WHERE TO SAVE FILES. Always hit OK when changing any items.
This is what I choose to do that way each time I can tell it exactly where I want that file to go. I have a my downloads folder and in there I have individual folders for what every program I am downloading.

If you go to the above and find what it lists as your current location for where it is set to store the downloaded files you will find there all these files you have been downloading.
If you do not know how to open a zip file then you need to familiarize yourself with that. but if you are using windows xp it has a built in zip opener just double click on the zip file!

you do not need any other application to open a zip file no need to download any thing since windows already has one built in.

And you also check to see what you have to open Java.exe.

Windows XP is all I have to go by.
Start - Control Panel - Folder Options - File Type TAb.-
For Java it will say Jar- Lower down click change and select Java TM.......... Whatever you select click OK or
Apply as needed.
I don't know what it will be for dial-a-fix zip file.

thanks all of you for your input...I have been at this today for quite a while and I'm getting a little punch-drunk. I need to take a break and come back in a little while and re-read the information you have posted.

Wanted to update you on my problem with JAVA download. I did get all the downloads found and tried to open and install them but kept getting messages, error 1723, when i tried to install any kind of Java file.

I finally had to call system support to get it straightened out. I wound up doing a 'system restore', going back to a date listed in the restore section that says 'scheduled check point'. The tech guy said that was a good starting point because that point was most likely the most accurate.

But any way it is fixed, as far as I can tel. The bulk uploader portion of Photobucket connected without a problem and that was what prompted my downward spiral into 'computer try to fix it' mania.

If I have another problem I will try to be more to the point in describing the problem, After i re-read the above postings I see where I rambled too much and got off message. Anyway I wanted to let all of you know and thanks for the effort of helping.
