Bathroom exhaust fan

Hi

I just finished remodeling my downstairs bathroom. The exhaust fan works when you turn on the light. My wife would like for each to work separately of each other. So I need to know how do I run a separate line and switch for the fan and the light.

Rick -- well,
you need to know where the power source is -- either run to one of the fixtures or the switch box.
and you need to know how the wiring to the switch is run.
Easiest - would be if power is run to the switch box. then you'd just need to run 1 wire from there to either the light or fan

Not to sound snarky -- but if you're asking these questions on a forum, then I hope you're not thinking of DIY

Not to pile on, but this is something that should have been done near the beginning of this reno. No matter which direction power is coming from, you can't run a fan and light separately with only 1 wire. You'll need another wire running from the the fan to another switch. Obviously, that will need to run through the wall and ceiling. f you don't have open access from above, this will likely require cutting holes in the ceiling and/or wall.

My two guesses: Condensation & dirt. Or condensation & rust. Insulating the duct will help with the condensation. Also check to make sure there is a backdraft damper & that it is functioning. i.e., not stuck open...which it could be because of an accumulation of dirt, lint, etc.

We have 3 panasonics in our house-- a whisper warm which includes heat+light+fan and two of the ones that look like a recessed light and are light + fan. All work well, but all have been installed in the past year, so I can't comment on longevity. The recessed light ones are my favorite-- they allowed us to keep a sleek streamlined look in the shower (the ceiling in both showers is tiled) while also doing a good job moving air. All 3 are quiet and all 3 were expensive. I was uncomfortable spending that much on fans, but I have no regrets (as of now).

Is there no roof structure - rafters - which you can run between or mount an interior side fan? If you mount an exterior side fan, look at Fantech to find smaller cfm models suitable for a residential sized bathroom. If you have deep snow, you may want to curb it, or keep the fan interior side with a gooseneck vent cap.

It is one conductor (wire) and a double sw single gang. The hot is already in the switch box, that single wire gets attached to one of the sw and gets wired to the fan motor. You may have add a jumper depending on the sw configuration
