Where is this coming from? This is last year's news. GE shopped its appliance division last year to try to raise cash needed for its bleeding GE Capital division. It couldn't find a satisfactory deal so didn't sell it.

There are NO guarantees in buying appliances from ANYONE. Brands get bought and sold constantly. Even with the SAME ownership, companies discontinue models. Small, new companies may not be around in 5 years. Companies that make great products may go under due to debt structure. Etc.

However, I would be LESS concerned about the future of GE Appliances, whether it gets sold or not, than about most any other appliance company.

Never worry about parts. 99% of the parts are the same in each appliance. You can fix a 30 year old range, just as easy as a new one. An ignitor used 30 years ago, is still being used today in most ovens. GE is going no where.

I agree with the above posters. On the other hand I wouldn't necessarily get all the same brand. Personally, I would stay away from GE refrigerators. In the past, at least, some of their models have had problems with leaks. I suggest you research the appliances individually.

Weissman... which French door fridge would you recommend? Budget is around $2500 (give or take) and, based on many posts here, am thinking i should stay away from LG given customer service complaints, etc. Looking at a 28.5 cu. ft., with an ice dispenser in the door. Crushed ice is a deal breaker for me so omited Dacor from decision set since they don't seem to have any ice dispensers in teh door. Thoughts?

Have you looked at Whirlpool and/or Kitchenaid? They make good fridges - don't know if they have a model that meets your needs.

In that size range, people like the Samsung.

Off topic but wanted to ask you... as for a 30" gas range, am thinking about GE profile also since they're offering a good rebate if you buy 2 or more appliances. The ideal would be a Wolf but $4k for a 30" gas range is a bit out of budget. Trying to stay around $2k. I do cook and bake a lot... we have a GE profile right now and it's fine but certainly not exciting. Any other brands i should look at that can deliver while still staying close to budget?

GE isn't the best brand on the marketplace.

They are not the worst either.

They have been for sale over a year now, but no one has an xtra 50-100 billion lying around to scoop them up, so it's unlikely to happen soon.

Their parts are already expensive so not much worry there.

Your salesman isn't a very savy one.

I have been thinking about GE for my gas stove. Had a GE refrigerator but several problems so would not buy another GE fridge. You mentioned Wolf 30" for $4000-that's a great price. Looked at the 30" Wolf model DF304 and cheapest price here is $5731.

We just had a repair guy out to work on our fridge and we asked about other brands, just in case it turned out to be terminal which, luckily for us, it is not. He recommended staying away from both LG and Samsung.

Not sure about repairability of older appliances. We tried to get a replacement control board for our ~ 13 year old MagicChef AG range for about a month and finally gave up. (we get an erratic alert tone with a flashing F1 on the display).

Now looking to replace the range, but in no hurry. I just plug it in when we want to use it and it still works fine.

I have owned a GE French Door refrigerator since last year and it has worked fabulously. No problems whatsoever. We love the stainless finish, the LED lights, the space, the bottom freezer, etc. Just to hedge my bet, I got a 4 year performance guarantee.

I bought GE washer/dryer 10 years ago and they are still going strong.

My brother bought GE dual fuel gas range 3 years ago (through me) and he has been very happy.

While they might not be the best, I have had good luck with them. However, stay away from the lower priced products from most manufacturers. One of my friends bought a house 4 years ago with builder grade GE appliances and they are all rusted!!

The logical buyer for the US GE appliance division is MABE SA of Mexico which has already taken over the Canadian operation among others and also produces a lot of GE branded products at its various factories for sale in the US. Like others have mentioned, the retail customer shopping for appliances will likely notice little if any difference.
