How to back up the hard drive

I've been reading some threads on this forum today and was reminded that I don't have any backups of our hard drives. I looked at some past posts that recommend Acronis True Image and was wondering if this program is still recommended. I'd also like to know just how to go about backing up the hard drives. What I need to get and what I need to do.

Acronis is an excellent program, I have it. There are some free imaging programs also.
You would be imaging the entire drive including the opearting system so should you have a need to use the image it would put it back exactly the way it was when you did the image, it is just like taking a snapshot of the drive.
This site does a good job of explaining how to use it and also you can purchase it from them for a reduced cost.

with imaging you can back up to an external hard drive, another internal hard drive, a partition, cd or dvd, flash there are many options depending on the product used.

I still also keep a copy on a flash drive and online storage of my most important files and pictures etc just to be extra safe.

I save a copy of my hard drive to the Acronis Secure Zone.
That's on my hard drive. I also save a copy to an External
hard drive.
I had and extra hard drive so I cloned a copy of my hard drive to it also.
All it takes to Recovery your hard drive is to insert your
Acronis CD and power your computer on. You can than go to
your Secure Zone or your External hard drive for a full
Recovery. Some parts are confusing but with practice you
will be OK. I have Acronis True Image 10
They have newer versions out now.

If you have it in Norton Antivirus quarantine......delete it. Then if you can't reformat the Hard Drive, toss it out! Look2me was an adware program that tracks your online surfing activity. It then sends the collected info back to the originators and starts generating targeted pop-up ads based on your interests. This parasite can also redirect your web browser and hijack your homepage. In addition, Look2me can download other spyware to your hard drive, including fake anti-spyware and antivirus applications. I'd make sure that your computer is free and clear of infection and then delete all your old Restore Points and create a new one. Try running a malwarebytes scan as a precautionary measure.

How to back up on WD Passport hard drive?

Hi Susan, I just got a WD Passport also, haven't done anything with it yet. I just want to use it to back-up my most important files as about a year ago my hadrdrive went and had to replace it, luckily I found someone who was able to recover just about everything that was one it. I don't want to take that chance again. I hope someone answers your post so that I also can find out how to update my files once I save everything. Carol

A 1 gig drive is awfully small to use as a backup device. There are 4 gig thumb drives available for $10-15 that will store more without using electricity. If you're going to use an old drive for backup, it's probably already formatted, but you may want to do a quick format to clear it off. It doesn't need an OS on it.

Thank you all for answering. owbist, I downloaded a program called HDD Health (recommended by Kim Komando) and that is what is giving me the Attribute seek error message. It was giving me the message about the Temp Critical and with the dust that was there, I'm sure I was headed for a crash. It said the temp ws 48 degrees celcius, so I feel very lucky that HDD Health caught it. I haven't had that message since I cleaned it out. I will try PC Pitstop when I finish here. I did a Balarc Advisor report and all it says about the hard drive is "160.04 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity",so I have to do a little research to find out what make it is. I do have the case up off the floor sitting on my desk top, but it still was very dusty. It has plenty of free space around it for ventilation. I really don't want to replace the whole set up, because this has every thing I need except smaller size and still feels like a "new" one to me, except I have a bulky 17" CRT monitor. Until now I have had zero problems with it. I think I bought it in 2004, so it isn't that old, at least for me, and it has everything most of the new ones have. I have 135 GB free out of the 160. How do I backup my bookmarks and address book? I use Firefox and Outlook Express. cboy,I think cloning to a new hard drive is what I want to do, so I might be back to ask how to do that. Thanks again

If you have a new drive or external drive, suggest you search the manufacturer's site to see if there is free backup software available. My old Acronis backup software was no longer supported by Acronis and at a poster's suggestion, found that the Seagate site offered backup software. It turned out to be Acronis also, but a version a little older than that currently being sold by Acronis. It is working well. Would Seagate's current free backup software, FreeAgent, work on your computer? I don't but it might be worth a try. If it doesn't work, it can be removed.
