When that happened to me, my youngest son helped me by telling me to reformat the hard drive and then re install Windows.I had all my information backed up before I reformatted.

I don't have a Windows XP disc. Really stinks! Thanks, anyway.

1-Boot to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key while booting
2-Choose safe mode, Press Enter
3-Select operating system, Press Enter
4-Click Administrator Account
5-Windows is running in Safe Mode, Click YES
6-At the Safe Mode Desktop, click, Start, - Run - Type - msconfig - OK
7. General Tab - Click Launch System Restore.

I was able to get a cd for my emachine for $20.00

You should be using a backup system like Acronis 10 or 11
This would have allowed you to insert the Acronis CD and
go to your backup and restore your computer.

What is the make and model of the computer. Perhaps you have your operating system on a separate partition on the hard drive.

Went to safe mode, no option for Administrator..The computer is a Dell Dimension 8200.

When I had this problem, I went to a local computer shop and they made a Win XP start-up disk for me. Charged me a dollar.

Now a blue screen appears reading:

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again,follow these steps:

did you have sp3 on this pc?? did you have windows updates set to update automatically? did you have sp3 blocked from installing?

did you by any chance recently run a registry cleaner type program?

before you even consider doing a reformat you can put a linux live cd in and get to your data to save it so you do not lose it if you have not made back ups.

If you can get in through safe mode to system restore try to go back in time to a restore point before this started UNLESS it was the install of sp3 that caused this if so you do not want to do system restore you want to get to add remove and remove sp3.

try putting a usb flash drive in one of your usb ports and try to re start, on some occasions that helps.

I would follow those directions it gave you for sure, when in safe mode there is an option to stop it from doing the auto restarts you can turn that off and it may give you more info on the error messages.

I do think your're going to be able to work through this error on your own blue screens are difficult tell you the truth I don't think windows knows half the time it just generates the error with 16 possible causes, and the event viewer is useless unless you can understand the data and how to apply it to the problem.

I did it many times. Keeps going back to black screen after it looks like it's loading.

have you tried just putting a flash drive in your usb port and rebooting to see if that works? there is a problem on some pc mother boards that will help on certain error messages.

SP3 is the latest windows update service pack for windows xp, have you installed it? if not do you have your windows updates set to do them automatically? if so it could have installed it and this could be a result of a conflict with it, many pc's have big problems with sp3.

you do not have to buy any discs, you can download the linux live cd free there is a link on that link I posted or you can go to any bookstore that has linux magazines and they have them free in the magazines, some have ubuntu linux some have other distros, the directions I posted are using ubuntu.

have you made backups of your data or do you have any type of backup for your data at all?

Maybe someone would know if a BootDisk would do any good.

I tried the flash drive, nothing. Not sure if I have sp3 or not. I'm so not comp. savvy. Don't I need a blank CD to download the free Linux Live?
What kind of data would need to be backed up. I'm only worried about photos & email addresses.

Locate and open your pictures.
How to highlight or select one or more pictures.
Hold down on the CTRL Key and start left clicking all the pictures you want to copy
or hold down on the left click and drag your pointer to highlight.
Another way is at the left top open Edit - click select all.
After you have highlighted or selected the pictures you want to copy to CD, look to your left for the words - Copy to CD or Copy all items to CD
At the right bottom of your screen you will get a balloon popup. Read and click at the correct spot on the popup.
New location.
Look to your left and click Copy these files to CD.
You will get a welcome to the CD Writing Wizard. Follow directions and finish your copy of your pictures.
