Miele SpeedOven 120V or 240V ?

I am trying to be ahead of our installers who I don't 100% trust. We have a H6800BM SpeedOven from Miele that is supposed to be installed in a couple of weeks. We were checking the fit in the cabinet space and realized we only have a standard 120V outlet. The spec sheet originally told us 120v/240V 20 A. My original assumption was it could work off either 120V or 240V and just use more or less amps respectively. The book says look at the tag on the machine( it shows 120V/240V), however it comes prewired with a 14-30P plug on it. The new spec sheets for the oven say it must be 240V. The box it come in however simply said 120V 60Hz.

My current understanding is 120V/240V means the plug needs to be able to supply both voltages. The box the machine came with is now the major point of confusion. Otherwise I would have already started fishing wires. I plan on calling Miele as well when they are open to get further clarification. Does anyone here have experience in kitchen appliances with a 120/240V tag?

I had the same issue when I installed my Miele speed oven. The installation instructions confused my electrician. We didn't have the 240 and when we turned the oven on, it didn't heat. The lights and clock worked but no heat. He had to run a new line. You need the 240.

That is indeed misleading labeling on Miele's part. I think what they mean by that is that it needs to be a 4 wire 240V connection, not 3 wire.

3 wire connections are comprised of 2 120V lines and a ground. They derive 240V from the 120 volt lines and are suitable for appliances that contain 240 volt loads only.

However, that does not apply to kitchen appliances, which generally have 120V loads as well. In the case of this oven, that would be the lights and the control board. So, we have 4 wire 240V connections for this situation. They have the same wires as a 3 wire connection plus a neutral, and supply 120V only to the loads that need it. This explains nycbluedevil's experience. Only the 120V loads on the oven functioned.

We've had 3 Miele (USA) spec washing machines and dryers in the last 15 years, and NOT one was able to be converted. IMO, this is not possible, or a good idea. Miele now sells several washers that run on good ol' American current...although their electric dryers (as so USA electric dryers) still require 240/200. Good Luck!

The Advantium won't do that for you either, really. You can warm frozen food on speed cook mode but some of the limits of microwaving apply. The smaller the serving, the better it works. Family sized portions take longer, and you have to work harder to make sure the interior is fully and evenly cooked. There is a loss in quality when you take short cuts. Some people can use a speed oven to cook many things as well as they could in a standard oven, in about half the time. That's cooked from raw. With anything frozen, especially if it's large and dense, you'll have a much better result if you thaw it first. From there, speed cooking could cut the time for warming. And the Advantium isn't bad at defrosting. I have both a Gaggenau combi-steam and an Advantium, but I don't have the time pressures most of the time to need to speed cook. If I had to choose one, I'd choose the combi- and a basic model microwave, because there are things that I like to microwave. You could probably do all of them in the combi-steam though. Part of the reason I have an Advantium is for the third oven space it gives as a convection oven. And I thought I'd use the speed feature more. I also didn't find any deals on that speed oven. I've bought many appliances from AJ Madison, great customer service, quick shipping. With problems, we have dealt with them sending out local repair guys, arranging appliance return etc. Yes, a little more of a hassle than buying local, but not bad. Get ahold of a sales rep and write an email asking for a year end deal etc...they have always adjusted the price rather than just adding into your shopping cart on the website. My local appliance store quoted the 240V for $2400 while HD has it for $2799.

Excellent info! Main takeaway: 240 gets concurrent elements which can lead to faster results. This makes perfect sense. I didn’t learn that from any other conversation and a couple of you commented about this. Also, 240 cannot go be below a counter. I’m good with this. I wanted it to be counter high but not on a counter’ which I don’t think you could do anyway. There are 27” built-ins and 30” built-ins. They have the same interior space, but the 27” does not come in 240. Becky- I am also a little shorter and am slight concerned not having the traditional microwave opening, but a traditional oven pull. I’ll learn! Thank you everyone and I am staying with the 30” built in 240. Regular oven height and I’ll have 3 nice drawers below and typical above oven storage up top. For my plans, this is going to be great! I think the advantium will be my primary everyday, everything oven. I am also planning on a dual fuel range with two ovens. I’m getting the cafe modern glass version. It’s a very sleek look. Very excited. Thanks again and I hope this helps others, too. Although I’m having to pay to install the 240 circuit, I think in the end I’ll be happy I did. Looking forward to 3 ovens. If I find a neighbor with a 120, maybe we’ll have an Oven-off and I’ll report back to this thread!

The speed ovens that do run off 120 Volts, can NOT, "Walk & Chew gum" at the same time!

The 120 Volt Advantium, (for example) can not microwave and convection bake at the same time. It has to "divide its time" between the 2 functions, whereas, My Electrolux Speed Oven, as well as the Miele and the 240 volt Advantium can microwave and convection bake at the same time, and thus are faster.
