Best oven for slow cooking
Comments (2)Not sure if you're able to use an outdoor grill/oven thing over there. Here, if you live somewhere where its nice out a lot, you might get a Big Green Egg for the combination of slow cooking and very high heat (searing). If you're interested, there are threads about this (and similar models) in this forum from last summer. Indoors, I've used the Miele speed oven for slow cooking, because it does relatively low temperatures. But Miele doesn't go as high as you want (maybe 475; I forget), and it kicks out an error code and shuts down if you run it more than ~5 hours or so; that's a bother for long bouts of slow cooking. Not sure how common that is among other oven brands....See MoreDoes anyone have warming drawer under their scoop drawer?
Comments (7)I reported a repair & had the service technician come out to check out the warming drawer. His explanation after verifying the temperature is correct is that the drawer is UL certified (Underwriter's Laboratory) & pretty much operating as designed -- not a direct quote. I told him that my assessment of the situation is that this is a design problem. KA has a great idea to add additional capabilities to the warming drawer (slow cooking -- works great, I can do multiple dishes simultaneously), but the drawer is commonly being insulated when placed under a single or double oven. KA does not design for serious cooks (for example, they design a maximum size 30" warming drawer so it will fit nicely under the oven stack). Serious cooks want & need their warming drawers more accessible. Thus I installed under my 36 inch KA cooktop (& scoop drawer). With the gaps left between the drawer & the spice pullouts I had the cabinet maker create filler panels on the island beside the drawer. I asked the technician to report my concerns. In the meantime I sent an email to KA & their net was working-as-designed, move the utencils (I have to use an oven mit with the metal handled utencils in the drawer after using the slow cooker function.) I have noticed a blog & I will attempt to get there over the next few weeks to see what response I get. Additionally, DH had some water heater insulation we placed on top of the warming drawer. Although it reduced the temperature a few degrees, I could still not hold my metal-handled utencils with my bare hand. The KD is asking the cabinet guy if a panel can be built above the warming drawer. If anyone else uses this feature on the KA Warming Drawer I'm interested in your experience....See Morewarming drawer with slow cook setting???
Comments (4)I have a panel ready KA with slow cook ability. I love the drawer and use it 5x/week, despite the fact that it's under a double oven stack. I bought it because I was looking for a deal on a panel ready unit. Hopeful I could find a KA for the slow cook, I would have purchased whichever brand I could find panel ready at the best price. I got lucky. ;) Truthfully, I have a crock pot I've used 2x in 10 years and only for a mulled berried cider and a warm cheese dip so I don't necessarily plan to use the WD as a SC, but you never know. Nice to know the ability is there....See MoreWarming Drawer Questions
Comments (7)Will 3cm marble have a plywood substrate? Mine at 4cm does not, and it was my understanding that if I had chosen the 3cm it wouldn't have had it either. I have a paneled 30" KA WD under my double oven stack. When I decided that I had looked around enough to know I could find a good deal on one and that we would use it enough to warrant buying one, my cabs were already mostly built. The only spot I could really put one was under the ovens where there would have been a drawer of that same size. I was looking for a panelable one and just happened to find a killer deal on the KA on Ebay. My cab maker made a cab front for mine as I wanted it to match my cabs. He said he couldn't drill the holes for the control knob and indicator light through the Shaker front so he made it a slab. (I don't think he had ever paneled at WD before.) DH really hates how it looks with the slab panel so we're having it remade in Shaker without the holes. I don't turn the control knob through that hole anyway as I can't see the temperature markings without opening the drawer, and we'll just have to remember to turn it off. (Ignore the pot roast on the rangetop and grease spatters on the drywall behind.) The KA has a moist/dry setting and a slow cook function. I have yet to use it as a slow cooker, but it's nice to the ability is there. I use the WD about 5 times a week: - To keep food warm when I've mis-timed getting everything finished at once - When I know I'll need both ovens at the last minute and need to bake something else also. I bake the dish ahead that can be kept warm in the WD. - Warm plates. - Keep DH's dinner warm on all those nights he works late. - Keep certain foods warm for second helpings. - Proof yeast dough. - Batches of pancakes as they come off the griddle - Warm bread or rolls. (I haven't used it yet to retherm dried out crackers or bread but I know I will at some point.) Mine may be in the least ideal spot, but I can't believe how much I use it. I'm so glad I bought one. I second Plllog's excellent advice to do it now. Retrofitting will be difficult with the electrical outlet you'll need and, possibly, the extra room at your electrical panel....See Morechipshot
