Diane,

Your package arrived today at the post office and your double swap was a big hit! She is off doing word searches while I try to get dinner ready.

Diane sent a lovely package for me, but not only that, she did a double swap and sent a package for Chance as well!

I got a pretty chafing dish that is both glass and metal and a few sets of glass salt and pepper shakers (sorry Diane, one set did not make it in tact.) These will come in handy with entertaining, for sure. For ethnic, she sent me a charming, sort of vintage, Amish cookbook. Looks like a great read and probably filled with t and t recipes. The book will come to bed with me tonight for some reading!! For the cooking method I got a complete roasting set, which of course includes some items I have never had (baster cleaning brush) and some that certainly need to be replaced (a slightly melted baster comes to mind).

In Chance's swap package she included a Velvet cookie mix, (did you put it together Diane?), angel stickers and lotion (has sparkles right in it and has already been tried out) and an activity pad, that she is already working through!

Once hired a student out the Jr. college that had a course in horticulture and they gave one credit if a student worked inside the industry during the summer break. I thought it might be a win-win situation where I would get a worker who was actually interested in plants and the business and they would get better pay than one of the big box stores were paying and some college credit also. Went to career day at the college and found a 22 year old man who seem qualified. First day he comes in thirty five minuets late. One of my pet peeves. At the time all of our plants were in pots grown in fir bark. The main task that day was repotting. All you had to do was take a plant in a 4" pot and dump the old bark out, wash off the plant and repot it into a 6" pot. Seems simple enough and all the material was light weight that a child could do it. So I could get to know him a little bit I decided to do the same job next to him figuring that the learning curve here for a college kid was in the first five minuets and then just repeated for the rest of the day. It was obvious that I --- the very elderly man --- was producing much more results than he was. I encouraged him to keep up. After lunch he wanted to learn something new. He had had enough potting up. But while I said we would do many different tasks within the plant industry... today all these young plants needed to be repotted so we could get them ready to be sold. Next morning he didn't show up for work but came around in the afternoon to pick up his paycheck for one day's work. Quote "This is too much like work!" Obviously he thought that a job was getting a paycheck but without any effort. Most of my employees are pretty good overall. But sometimes you come across a situation that you just cannot guard against because you didn't think anyone could survive without one iota of commonsense. Like the time a thirty year old was water the pots and the water was coming out with such force that it was forcing the fir bark along with the plant out of the pot. Had over 100' x 6' of empty pots and suddenly bare root plants. I feel there is not much you can do with someone this to the bone stupid and it will only get worse in time. This guy has the record for the shortest employment, I doubt I could of been able to help him become better in time. Of course when these two first showed up looking for a job they said all of the right stuff... They are pretty good at interviewing for a job. ... but not keeping one. One reason why they are good at interviewing is that they have had so much practice at it !

I love the mug, it's a verynice shape and I really like the blue colors, they are so peaceful and soothing. The colandar would make a very nice fruit basket and I would never have thought of putting a candle in it. The cookbook? Most definately let it go. Been awhile since I've been on here, but my situation is partially the same. We have a grown daughter (actually not biologically either my husbands nor mine) but he has been with her, her entire life. He retained custody of her and her 2 sisters when BM went all crazy on drugs.. Now that she is grown she just pretends he doesn't exist. Now this enrages me to no end. I feel like if she wants to ignore me or be angry with me fine, I can take it. But that man did what even her own biological mother wouldn't do for her.. Love her unconditionally and raise her. However; I learned that this rage I feel doesn't help me at all, nor my husband. She is an adult and it is her life and her mistakes. although it hurts, you have to let them make their choices be it right or be it wrong.

Christina may be one of the worse offenders, but then I never watch Vintage Flip. I have to mute the TV when Christina speaks or else I cannot watch that show. I simply change channels when HHR is on and someone has an annoying voice. As for "Pop of color" - I am reminded of a project given to my 2-D design class, in which we had to create a geometric abstract watercolor painting and use only one fully saturated color, but it was not called "pop of color" at the time, although it served that function. The lesson was that only one saturated color should be used at a time, but this rule was lost on Piet Mondrian. My painting started out with both red and blue at pretty much full intensity, but I still felt that the blue receded. The teacher made me dull the blue for that project, but I'm not sure it helped the final result.

I love the old cookbooks and the Amish one sounds intriguing and I'm going to look for some of those! A Chafing Dish and a Roasting Set...wow how fun!

i love your entire package but the chafing dish, what a great item. i find that amish cookbooks have simple and excellent recipes in them.

Diane always puts such a personal touch on her packages, I always love them. That chafing dish is really pretty, although it's too bad about the broken salt and pepper shakers. :-(

Chance sure has that mega-watt smile, she certainly approves of Diane's choices too. I'll wait for the pictures of her baking those cookies!

What a nice swap(s), Janet. I have a Mennonite cookbook that looks much link that one. It was a great read. And the roasting set...you put some thought into that, Diane!

Great swap box! I have a chafing dish and they are wonderful for parties. That one is so pretty! And the Amish cookbook sounds like it will have some great recipes.

Hi Robin, not don't mind at all....that one we got last August. We have to go to Toronto to get them made. Last summer we got to visit with Chase when we were there.

When she was smaller we had to get new ones about every 6 months, now we can go to 10 or even 12 months. Notice the sleeping beauty on it!!LOL

Janet, the Amish cookbook looks really interesting. Would love to know if there's a recipe for chow-chow in there that doesn't have to be canned? Your Chance is a breathtaking child, what beautiful eyes she has!

So can she use the hand? A co-worker of DH only has one hand and her other arm is like Chance's and goes below the elbow. She is very co-ordinated without her hand, although she does tell her co-workers that they type to fast and so do not think about what they are writing. her son once took her to school for show and tell and she tied her shoes.

I remembered that Chance did not have that arm in the photos from Toronto (I think).

Well seeing that smile on Chance is worth all the trouble I had trying to come up with 3 things that would match the catagories for the swap for her-- guess the "ethnic" angels fit ok-- such a sunny smile-- made my day .

Yes the cookie mix I do-- it's one of the "cone mixes" we sell at craft shows-- as is the Angel Cream.

Diane, we are so pleased with everything. The angel cream has been smeared all over her face two nights in a row, it has pixie dust in it you know!!!!! We are going to make the cookies Saturday so will try to post a few pix then. She LOVES the activity book.....going to try to find a few more for our road trip this Sunday.

The cookbook is a very fun read, I see a few recipes I will try, but the lye and grease soap I think I will pass on!! (It has recipes for just about anything in the home)

Robin, her arm is a myoelectric (has two electrodes implanted in the arm)and she can open and close it with her muscles on her little arm. She is very competent with it and without it, and we used to have to get her to wear a few days a week with some coaxing. Last month a kid at a party we were at "laughed" at her little arm (she did not have on the prosthesis) and so she has insisted on wearing everyday now. She has a "tatoo" of sleeping beauty on it but it is turned away from the camera.
