I just counted all my accounts - 54.

There are 20 passwords; 32 User ID's.

There are a variety of requirements for passwords so it's impossible to use the same one for all.

Only one has a gizmo with a 60 second code to type in which I keep on my desk. If they all had one of those - well the mind boggles.

Only one (Treasurey Direct) uses a virtual keyboard with a changing format.

That doesn't even touch the "secret" questions.

My list sits easily to hand. The chance of someone messing with it are vanishingly small.

Duplicate passwords and/or usernames on sensative websites; i.e. web shopping, financial or medical, are an invitation for disaster. Being a lazy user is not the way to proceed.

As I reported on another thread, many sites are now requiring a minimum of eight characters with at least one numeric. In addition, some are requiring a capital letter or a miscellaneous character; i.e. $,%,#.

In the financial realm, some sites demand a password change every six months, and have a protocol that three consecutive log-in errors and the user is locked out of the account.

I agree that a breach using an at-home hard copy list is absolutely minute.

I have 117 passwords with who knows how many user names and secret questions. I never use the same one twice or my mother's maiden name, which the whole world must know by now. Genealogy has been great in opening up many new family names--all long dead--to use.

They are all on a handwritten doc. The only very bad omission is that I have not photocopied this doc and put it in the safe deposit box. Maybe confession to all of you will get me to finally do that critical step.

Ah, yes, that was one! I love Solstice's yard :). There was another one that had pics of the back yard...I've got some time right now...I had started going page by page and I'll pick up where I left off as I don't think the search function is working correctly yet. Thanks Mikie, but I have IE 7 and don't have anything that looks like that pic or anything similar that I can see via IE>tools>internet options> and checked all of the tabs...thus no way to change things that way. Am I missing something there? Might anyone know that has IE 7? Should I maybe just update to IE 8? Advantages? Disadvantages? It seems there should be some way to get the setting right in IE. btw...a friend had been here, so when I went to the Windows live log-in page it was also showing her email addy too. Just for kicks and giggles I clicked on her email addy to see it if would go to her In box without asking for a password. No go...it asked for a password on hers.

My funniest experience in an aircraft happened while I was stationed in Germany. The Air Force used to use a Kaman HH43 helicopter for an emergency responce crash vehicle. They had a huge 6ft diameter round metal pressure sphere that was loaded with firefighting foam which they carried on a hook under the helicopter. Two firemen were inside the helicopter with the Asbestos firesuites on. When an aircraft crashed they would fly in quickly and set the firebottle down and the firemen would jump out and grab the foam line, then the helicopter would hover over the burning aircraft using the downdraft to blow the flames back while the firemen laid down a path of foam till they could get to the aircraft and pull the crew out. One day my buddy, who was a crewchief on the helicopter called me and said they were going up on a training flight and asked if I would like to ride along, so off I went. As I boarded the helicopter I saw the pilot & co-pilot up front, my buddy, the crew chief, two firemen and another guy who worked at the base chapel that was coming along for the ride. We were all seated in the back while the helicopter just flew around in circles close to the base when suddenly we heard a radio call on our headphones. They had a crippled F4 Phantom coming in with an engine fire, so the pilot told us he had to go back and hook up the firebottle and while they were hooking it up I and the guy from the chapel would have to jump off. The chopper landed and while we were jumping off one of the ground crew hooked the cable on the lifting hook and the chopper took off again, but when it was about 50ft off the ground one of the firemen jumped out, bouncing off the ground from 50ft and broke his leg. I didn't have a clue as to why he just mysteriously jumped out, but later that afternoon while sitting in the NCO club my buddy the crew chief came in and he told me. It seems that while we were flying around the guy from the chapel had got airsick, but not wanting to appear like a whimp to the other guys onboard he didn't ask for a burp bag, instead, he had barfed in the firemens boot and while we were jumping off the firemen was pulling his boots on. By the time he realized that the guy had barfed in his boot he tore off after the guy without even thinking and jumped out....LOL

Raven, I don't see how passphrase would be any better than random numbers and letters would be. You would have to remember the sentence for each site then the combination you used, no one can do that. I would think that just using a jumble of letters and numbers would be easier. Maybe I am missing something. I write passwords down. I don't have the security problem lots of people do because no one touches the PC but me. I do not keep them on the PC and I do hide them.

My grandmother would have said, "goot ottical".

Pity the poor typist like me that typically types every 3rd word 3-4 times. A complicated random combination becomes a nightmare. Example: Original of above sentence:

I've come to accept my disability but a complicated password becomes a chore beyond all. As a student typist in my prime (age 12) I was able to achieve 10 words per minute ---before mistakes. Wouldn't let us look at the keys. One of my sisters was a professional piano player and she looked at the key board. Why couldn't I look at the stupid typewriter?

I can, however, type my name and address to beat hell.

Some years ago we had a visitor I didn't want to see. Wife told em I was busy and I sat at my desk typing name-n-address over repeatedly; on a real type writer. Clatter clatter clatter bing thunk. The ruse workrd. Uh. workt? )^)&**(&^%!!!
