I just counted all my accounts - 54.

There are 20 passwords; 32 User ID's.

There are a variety of requirements for passwords so it's impossible to use the same one for all.

Only one has a gizmo with a 60 second code to type in which I keep on my desk. If they all had one of those - well the mind boggles.

Only one (Treasurey Direct) uses a virtual keyboard with a changing format.

That doesn't even touch the "secret" questions.

My list sits easily to hand. The chance of someone messing with it are vanishingly small.

Duplicate passwords and/or usernames on sensative websites; i.e. web shopping, financial or medical, are an invitation for disaster. Being a lazy user is not the way to proceed.

As I reported on another thread, many sites are now requiring a minimum of eight characters with at least one numeric. In addition, some are requiring a capital letter or a miscellaneous character; i.e. $,%,#.

In the financial realm, some sites demand a password change every six months, and have a protocol that three consecutive log-in errors and the user is locked out of the account.

I agree that a breach using an at-home hard copy list is absolutely minute.

I have 117 passwords with who knows how many user names and secret questions. I never use the same one twice or my mother's maiden name, which the whole world must know by now. Genealogy has been great in opening up many new family names--all long dead--to use.

They are all on a handwritten doc. The only very bad omission is that I have not photocopied this doc and put it in the safe deposit box. Maybe confession to all of you will get me to finally do that critical step.

Hi Andrea, I was just thinking about you, too. I understand I may be seeing you on the 27th, hurray! As for the roses, I'm not a big fan of Madame Alfred, but mine is a minority opinion and you are free to dismiss it. It got a lot of mildew here, but your climate is quite different from mine and it may not be an issue for you. Since you have one already, you know how it responds to your conditions. I have Alister Stella Gray out on the back fence but it is one of the ones I just planted last year, so I will just be hopeful along with you. Secret Garden Musk Climber is a very large rose, bigger than I imagined. Make sure you give it generous space. I did not allow enough, and it did not survive when I tried to move it to a better spot. I have heard that it does not like being moved. I grew the shrub form of Hadley for a few years. The fragrance was divine, but it never did much and eventually I removed it. However, it may well like your climate better. Finally Autumn Damask. Mine just died, probably due to gopher damage. I had it for a good ten years. It bloomed in flushes for me all summer, so I suspect it rather likes warmer climates, unlike some of the other OB-OGRs. It is rather wild and woolly in its appearance, better suited for the back of the garden than front and center. I enjoyed growing this rose, but have already replaced it with something else better suited to that spot -- front and center in my garden. I've never grown Laughter Lines or Niles Cochet, and don't know them very well (or at all, in the case of Laughter Lines). In any case, have fun with your new roses. Rosefolly

Ah, yes, that was one! I love Solstice's yard :). Many years ago, I had a upsetting, disagreement with a close family member. That night I wrote a long, rambling letter bringing up every thing this person did from the beginning of time. I was upset and, maybe its a female thing, I wrote this ridiculously long letter using Word so I could password protect it. I had thought I would sleep on it and reread it the next day before sending. I didn't want to send an email. Well, needless to say, the next day the problem resolved. Everything was wonderful, I totally forgot about the letter. Long time later (maybe a year), I'm cleaning out my computer and find this cryptic Word doc that I couldn't open. I was deleting a bunch of junk. Then, I remembered that letter ! It was not something I would want on my computer (as life with this person was wonderful). So, I tried to delete it, couldn't. Needed a password. Had no idea what that could be. I was upset when written and heaven knows what I came up with. That letter still sits on this computer. I could never figure out the password. Back then, I thought I would have a new computer (this one is XP) and I would wipe the drive. Well I'm still using this machine and hope I can finally wipe it out and get a new machine. On another note, I worked in the medical field for years. Sometimes I would write letters for patients from home (rather than the office computer) in the evening to save time at work. I would password those letters, copy them on a flash drive and taken them to work. Copy to the work machine then delete from the flash and the home machine. Not ideal, probably not the best thing to do, but I did it. Any patient letters were always password protected. I sympathize with the OP as I've been there many times. If I did that now, I would write the password down. I didn't back then and never found a way to open that personal letter. I'll wait for Windows 10 then wipe this drive. Hope you find a way, Jane

I'm not sure it was my first day of school but it was definitely one of the first days of kindergarten. My cousin has just moved to my town and we were fast friends. We ruled the kindergarten classroom because we were the only ones that knew someone. Our mom's had to have the teachers put us in different classrooms after kindergarten because we wouldn't let anyone else play with us and we were very bossy. I'm not sure my mom did the right thing on that one. Both of us were very shy after that and didn't make friends easily until much later in school. My DH remembers his first days vividly. His mom walked him and his twin brother to school and they both followed her back home. They didn't want to stay there. This went on for several days and she'd walk them both back to school only to get home and find them back at home. Finally one day when they showed up yet again at home, she put them outside (it was a cold day) and wouldn't let them back in. They finally got cold and walked to school and stayed the rest of the time. I think that is the funniest thing ever. I can just imagine getting home after taking the little rascals to school only to find that they'd beat her home. Today they'd probably call social services or something.

Raven, I don't see how passphrase would be any better than random numbers and letters would be. You would have to remember the sentence for each site then the combination you used, no one can do that. I would think that just using a jumble of letters and numbers would be easier. Maybe I am missing something. I write passwords down. I don't have the security problem lots of people do because no one touches the PC but me. I do not keep them on the PC and I do hide them.

My grandmother would have said, "goot ottical".

Pity the poor typist like me that typically types every 3rd word 3-4 times. A complicated random combination becomes a nightmare. Example: Original of above sentence:

I've come to accept my disability but a complicated password becomes a chore beyond all. As a student typist in my prime (age 12) I was able to achieve 10 words per minute ---before mistakes. Wouldn't let us look at the keys. One of my sisters was a professional piano player and she looked at the key board. Why couldn't I look at the stupid typewriter?

I can, however, type my name and address to beat hell.

Some years ago we had a visitor I didn't want to see. Wife told em I was busy and I sat at my desk typing name-n-address over repeatedly; on a real type writer. Clatter clatter clatter bing thunk. The ruse workrd. Uh. workt? )^)&**(&^%!!!
