WANTED: Phyllis philodendron rocks!

Well my swap package arrived yesterday. I didnt get to open it till late last night, that's why I am late in posting. I love everything! Phyllis did a real good job of 'reading' me. The First item I opened was a book about wine. RED, WHITE AND DRUNK ALL OVER by Natalie MacLean. I love this book! I have looked at it a couple of times at Borders. Called my bf last night to tell her I got it and she demands to borrow it asap. We will see! :)

The second item, I must admit I went crazy over. A cookbook, ITALIAN COOKIE TRAY by Maria Sanchez. Phyllis saw my post about the gift boxes I make at christmas. This book will come in handy next year. Of coarse I plan on practicing untill I am blue in the face till then! :) I called my friend in Orlando, who just happens to be italian, and he already wants several of the recipes!

The third item, I dont know what to say! Phyllis hand painted a cookie tray for me in a Tuscan theme. Absolutely beautiful! I cant wait to make some goodies to put on it!

The fact that she took the time to make something by hand for me is just overwhelming! I will always display it proudly in my kitchen! She also included a box of note cards that say 'In the cookie of life Friends are the chocolate chips!' My mother especially liked these. I am gonna try to post the pics I took now, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

I know exactly how you feel, Kwie2011. When I stumbled up to that website, I think I suffered from sleep deprivation shortly thereafter, lol. I combed over as much of it as I could, trying to soak it all in. I was devastated when the original site stopped functioning. I thought all of Steve's knowledgeable information was lost to those of us online. You can't imagine how thrilled I was when I learned that the IAS had archived it. I'm always going back to read up on different sections whenever I get the chance. Seeing as how I live here in Arkansas, not too far from his "Exotic Rainforest," I plan on some day heading on up there to check it out for myself. As beautiful as the pictures are, I'm certain that they don't entirely do this place any justice. :)

Actually, there is a major reason it is not a Philodendron. The genus Philodendron contains approximately 1000 plant species. The genus Monstera contains just over thirty plant species. They are related, but not the same. They are related in that both are aroids. An aroid is simply a plant species that produces an inflorescence containing both a spath and spadix. One common example of a spathe would be the inflorescence of Spathiphyllum species, commonly known as a "Peace Lily". The inflorescence is commonly called a flower but is not. It is simply a specially modified leaf and is used for reproduction purposes. If pollinated, seeds will form along the spadix at the center of the inflorescence. Monstera species will eventually produce holes in their leaves. But they begin looking just like Philodendron species which can be very confusing to those without a botanical background. Typically, all Philodendron and Monstera species morph as they grow from juvenile to adult. People commonly expect every leaf of every Monstera, and Philodendron, species to look alike. They do not. They are not only capable of changing as they grow (and do) they often take on completely different forms within the rain forest. As as example, plants such as Monstera adansonii are extremly difficult to identify when young. Botanists have given that species many different scientific names (synonyms) due to the different morphologies within the forest. But all of those produce the same type of inflorescence, or spathe and spadix. A botanist often goes to the shape of the spathe and details fo the spadix for a final identification. Commonly, plants which are truly Monstera adansonii are sold as Monstera friedrichsthalii and Monstera obliqua plus many other names. Fortunately, Monstera deliciosa does not have that many "morphs" and is less difficult to identify. But it does have different shapes, especially sizes. Some have very few holes and are quite small. My friend Dr. Tom Croat of the Missouri Botanical Garden has seen variations growing in Central America that are quite small and actually grow attached to rock. Rarely does a leaf of Monstera deliciosa grow larger than four feet. I absolutely love the tray, such a gorgeous, graceful shape and the design is perfect! Well done, Phyllis!

Looks like Phyllis touched on two very important parts of daily life, wine and cookies! LOL! I love notecards and have stacks of them in the closet but I sure don't have any with a such a cute saying on them, 'In the cookie of life Friends are the chocolate chips!'...how perfect.

I'm really not that good with a paintbrush, honest! :D

I sponge painted it and then did the design in pencil. I was so nervous it wouldn't come out right! This painted pottery place in town is so much fun to visit but i always freak out waiting for my stuff to get done, because I think "What if it didn't come out right??!" I'm so glad it did.

You're too welcome for the box, Brenda! It was so much fun to put together for you, as I mentioned in my letter. I'm so glad you enjoyed everything and that it arrived there safely! And quickly, too! I was impressed. I really packed that tray well and hoped it didn't take you forever to get it open! :D

I'm so glad you didn't already have the books. That is too funny that you were looking at that one in the store! I hope you can get a lot of use out of it!

Here's a picture I took of the notecards...I thought they were so cute I bought some for myself. Of course. :D

You can see the detail of the tray in the background. It's supposed to be a vine with red berries but I almost thought they looked like Christmas lights. LOL I was looking for a smaller paintbrush to do more detail but the lady at the pottery store said she hides them from her employees. Well, duh!

Phyllis, let me applaud you in a dignified manner--well done on your beautiful cookie tray! Whether it's 'Roman Holiday' or 'Let's Get Drunk and Make Cookies' it looks like a great swap to me!

That Italian cookie book looks very intriguing. One of the guys I work with is Italian, and does a big cookie bake with his family at Christmas every year. He brings in lots of cookies for us--and we love him for it! You'll certainly gain new admirers with that in your baking arsenal!

Enjoy your treats Brenda. You did a great job Phyllis. I always end up buying a duplicate of something I bought my buddy too!
