Avast????

I have the free version now and it seems to work pretty good. It is due to expire very soon and should I buy the upgraded version? I did that for Norton and it let a worm in, got it out, but insisted I pay 99.00 for a updated version and I said no, but when I went to renew it even after several calls I could not get to work, but did get my money back.

Can I get Avast in the store? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

you do not need to buy AVAST you can keep the free version all you have to do is simply reregister it and they will send you a new code to insert in your current AVAST. Did you do the original registration when you first did the install?
this pdf from the avast download page gives you the directions on how to do the registration.

Before it is ready to expire, they should be sending warning emails etc to let you know and also with a link to click on to re-register. Just follow that link and do a RC said

Running 2 firewalls will deteriorate performance. The 2 firewalls will fight each other. However, there should be a firewall running before allowing your computer to connect with the internet. If Avast has a firewall, then one of these firewall should be disabled. If Avast does not have a firewall, by all means, run the Windows firewall, Your computer may connect with the internet during boot-up, or immediately afterward, if software settings are set to check for updates, and if your internet connection is "live" at that time.

I agree, it's definitely not necessary to uninstall the old antivirus software before downloading a new one. But before installing the new one, for sure. fredda, at the risk of stating the obvious, Windows XP is no longer supported from a security standpoint and using it does entail some risk. So long as you are using this PC for general purposes only and not for essential uses with any Win-only software, I would seriously consider installing Linux (a different operating system that's available for no cost) to replace XP. Start a new thread on that topic if that may apply to you, there are other contributors here (not me) who can provide helpful guidance.

I am using firefox browser. Windows 7. I am not sure if I downloaded everything properly when I did it. Is there a way for me to uninstall all that they would have put on my computer last night.

Or you could uninstall Avast and install Microsoft's free 'Security Essentials'. No annual registration required.
