Printer ink usage

Here is a rather inconsequential question, but I wonder about it frequently. I have 2 printers connected to my computer. The oldest is a Lexmark, and when I turn off my computer at night, the printer automatically turns off. (I use this printer for printing my church stuff). I also have a newer HP all-in-one for my personal stuff. The HP doesn't turn off unless I can remember to actually physically turn it off. And I frequently forget. Some times it will be a couple of days before I turn on the computer. So my question is ----------does this cause the ink to dry up any faster? Maybe because of heat? My last cartridge didn't last very long at all, but the previous ones seemed to last a while.

Are they both inkjet printers? Most of the newer inkjets will turn off or go into sleep mode when they aren't in use so there shouldn't be a big difference in ink usage if it does that. How old are the printers? Do you know the model numbers?

Both my HP7760 and my wife's Canon AIO stay on 24/7 with no ill effects. As Bpgreen notes above they go into snooze mode.

I use my HP laserjet 6L laser printer and the pot stakes I get from Gempler's. I can print a sheet at a time, and they do hold up well in the sun. I have used these now for two years and you can still read the tags on the few plants I didn't sell in that amount of time. I just go into word and format the labels and then print them, but gempler's will send you instructions with the stakes. You can order a sample pack to see if you can deal with it, and it doesn't cost much. The only drawback is that the stakes are thin and flimsy. They are good to put in new plants as you're potting them up but you can't go back and tag established plants very easy with them because they don't stick into the soil well after the plants are rooted in. Yes, I knew there were expiration dates on ink (there's expiration dates on many things people wouldn't necessarily think about, peroxide & alcohol are just a couple) and there's also good and bad ways to store ink. You don't want to stockpile too much. I was looking in the store at the ink cartridges and wasn't surprised that the rotation wasn't maintained. Won't name the store. A couple people go crazy when it's mentioned. So watch when you buy too. Also, many if not most have a chip inside them to say they're out of ink before they actually are. They have to declare how much ink is in a cartridge but not how much you can actually use. On my Epson, there's a little reset switch. It gave me the message that it was out of ink. I pushed the reset and looky here, all of a sudden there's ink in there again! How it works varies from printer to printer but usually look around the electrical connection and there might be the little spot to poke a paper clip. The maddening part is that it has to cost more to put the electronics in there than it costs for the ink but they keep you buying it.

I recently purchased an HP Photosmart C6380 all-in-one. Is there any way to shut off the head cleaning that this printer goes through between scans? There should not be any ink usage with just scanning but for some reason this unit does. I have printed out only two pages but have scanned numerous things. The ink is nearly out. Ouch! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Anyone use the inexpensive replacement inkjet cartridges from companies like LDproducts? For my Canon printer, they have 15 cartridges for $40. Probably made to a low quality standard in China, but the price is so attractive compared to the Canon OE cartriges at $10-12 apiece. Ilene, good suggestion about the .pdf file "print" software that is free for download. The one I use is primo.pdf. I don't think everyone knows about this useful option. I get a very long life out of Canon S600 cartridges by using the custom print setting with fast print quality and auto (fast) halftoning. This results in less ink use than with the draft setting. They both say 600 dpi, but this custom setting is faster and the text is grey black instead of jet balck with the draft setting. It also works fine with color maps I print. Text is still highly legible and makes two sided printing not show through the page. Cost per page is very low, even with the Canon cartridges. You can save custom settings with most printers.

Normally leaving a printer on will have no ill effect on its operation or the life span of the ink cartridge. An actual curse to inkjets is lack of use. The heads will tend to dry up and start to clog.

I like Janette have two printers, a good one and an inexpensive all-in-one, which I truthfully don't use all that much. I do try to remember to print a sample page every few weeks if I haven't used them.

If you are like me and have the printers defaulted to greyscale and fast print remember to manually reset them to normal so the color cartridge is used also.

When I click print it will come on by itself, then I turn them off at night when I turn my PC off. I have been using printers since 1996 and haven't had a cartridge dry up. I used it a lot in the beginning, but not anymore and still no problem.

Another thing to consider, some cartridges are small...meaning they contain less ink. I think mine are 7ml, enough for 190 pages.

I was told several years ago by the IT gal at my former job that it does dry out the ink if you leave them on. However, it has been almost ten years since she was in college for computer science and machines may have changed.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I just got back to the computer. Here are some answers to your questions.
They are both inkjets. The oldest one is a Lexmark Z705. It is color and black, but I only use the black ink now since I got the other one. I don't remember when I got it, but it has been a long time, 4 years or longer. It is the one I use for the church printing and I use it a few times a month. The other is an HP PSC 1510xi that I got in 2006. I sue it frequently,but not heavily, for personal use. The Lexmark I never have to turn on or off. It automatically turns on when I click on print, and turns off when the computer turns off. The HP I have to actually push the button on the printer to turn it on and off, but I can't tell that it goes into sleep mode. The lights never dim. Anyway it sounds like I don't need to worry about it when I forget to turn it off. I think I just got a bad cartridge last time, because they usually last quite a bit longer.

I'm not sure about Lexmark, but if you get a bad HP cartridge, they (HP Support) will lead you through some diagnostic tests and send you a free cartridge.
