Just curious as to which of the above programs you guys & gaks prefer and why. I think they are both free?

Thanks

I would have a difficult time justifying storing my personal info in space. So I would opt for Open Office.

Googling I found no forum comments in the first 5 pages for Google Docs. I like to find forums, that way you are more likely to get actual user comments rather than paid for comments in many blogs and other articles. There was an interesting reference to Zoho Docs which seems much of the same but slightly ahead of Google Docs.

Zoho offered something I had not considered, the possibility of sharing certain docs with others selected by you. A person can be allowed as merely a reader or can be allowed input/modification privileges.

I know little about such things, but I would tend to take the opposite view for my own situation. I think of programs like Open Office (and email clients like Outlook) as kind of like a mail box one has at the end of one's driveway. It's at one's home, but a lot of things can go wrong on your end (weather damage, vandalism, etc.). Online storage (and webmail clients) on the other hand, to me, are like a Post Office (or safety deposit box). It's (supposedly) a safer place to keep one's 'stuff,' because it's in the hands of professionals -- with professional back-ups as well.

Of course, that's just my view and anyway I'm not2bright. ;-)

I have used open Office (OO) in an environment in which Word is the standard word format, usually some near current version of wood, e.g., Office 2005 (I now have 2007 and don't remember what the last version date is). I would save in Word '05 format and was able, most of the time, to open and modify/edit Word documents created by others. There were some glitches, bet there are some new ones between Word '07 and the current version of OO. The point of my post I I have done what is recommended.

MS Office question..

Some computers come with a free 30 version of ms office, but I deleted mine rather then pay for it, because if I was going to buy it, I would have gotten a disc in my hand instead of "downloaded version" because I am parnoid that I will lose the number and get it deleted, and not be able to install it. But, I would not make any changes without back up disc of the OS. Is it HP? You can order them from HP if it is less then two years old. I used to have a sony lap top and it came with microsoft money, and games that took like all the memory, so I kept deleting them, but that would make the whole system not work. Things could be different now. I have deleted microsoft office and no problems yet, but I have the back up disc in case. I bought microsoft office, because it was a cheap as microsoft word alone, but it did not work for me. I returned it for a full refund and bought just microsoft word which was all I needed. I don't know if any of this information will help you, but it always better to have recovery discs before doing anything. If you don't have them, you can returnd the computer to somewhere like best buy, and have them reinstall it. But, I have heard horror stories. Even if you pay to have someone else restore it to factory specs, it may or may not work the same.

Yes, the whole "Vista is a horrible monster" thing was way overblown. It wasn't MS's finest moment, but led to a lot of ill considered piling on. SnidelyWhiplash wrote : >>"kbarb, in that other conversation, . . . . If you want to guide that person through a conversion to Linux or a Windows upgrade, please go ahead." That desire was never expressed, neither for nor against - the person wasn't asking for any help installing an OS. The point you're trying to distract from with that sarcastic remark, is your blanket statement that any computer (hardware) with Vista (OS) isn't worth resuscitating and destined for the trash bin. It's just tendentious bad advice, for reasons afore stated. SnidelyWhiplash wrote : >>"15 year old . . . car with bald tires . . . . you'd say "Stop trying to deal with that junker and get something more reliable". Is calling the car a junker offensive?" Your analogy there is extremely exaggerated and hyperbolic, so not in useful support of your argument. Nevertheless, despite attempting to persuade someone towards what you think is a more promising direction, Yes, - saying something like that using derogatory words to someone who liked their car would be insensitive - the exact point we're trying to make. There are a myriad more considerate ways of wording things. And as mikie_gw has noted, we're getting way off track here as the OP's question is about Google Docs security and office type software suites.

I can't help you with any info about monitors and Lyme Disease but I've been a computer professional for 40 years. I'm certainly picky about being able to see what I'm doing since I'm clearly not young and spend 60-70 hours a week working on monitors. My first monitors were printers with keyboards attached as the punch cards were just going away. Consumer monitors like the ones you bought are pretty much made for consumer activities such as watching movies and viewing pictures. They are part TV and part computer monitor. I don't know how people stand them for serious work on text, particularly with black text on a white background. Actual televisions hooked up to a computer are great for a group of people looking a pictures from your travels but are just horrible for this type of work. Over the years, I've frequently needed a monitor on a weekend where the only choices were Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, etc. Basically nothing they have is acceptable for serious use. I'd suggest you contact someone that deals with real computer systems and have them setup something for you to look at. My personal opinion of Viewsonic was good about the time that CRT were the norm and was impressed with some of their early LCDs. My opinion of the company is poor for at least 10 years. Another problem I see with consumer monitors is the short height, for example 1920x1080 resolution in a 27" vs 1920x1200 in a business 24". When I work seriously on a long document with lots of reorganization and edits, I use a 1920x1200 24" turned portrait. I am sure you would love everything about this one except the price: http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/p242w-bk The next step down may meet your needs: http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/ea244wmi-bk I've never seen that one but have the 30" version. It's a big step down from the P series but still fabulous compared to the one you are using. On my desk, I have a P241, P301, E305, and a Eizo 27" square monitor 1920x1920. I wouldn't buy anything without trying it first!

Thanks, Owbist and Not2Bright, for answering. I had not thought about one being on my computer and the other being in outer space. I'll have to think about that. I can see advantages on both sides.

The only purpose I can see for storing documents on the web is if you need access to them from various locations. I like having them at home with the critical ones stored on external media.

On the occasions that I have to transport work product home I just use the good old thumb drive. Due to their nature I am absolutely certain my employer would never approve on-line storage.

I use Google Docs for some work documents which are not private. Surprisingly, a number of medical insurance companies, medical societies, even Medicare send documents through Google Docs. It is handy for filling out forms and applications. You can take your work home though the internet. I use flash drives for personal Word docs.
