Cabinet cut out for Miele Optima Dishwasher?

Hi,

I have a Miele dishwasher and the cut out specs say 23 5/8". My cabinet maker suggested I use 24" for the cutout in case I change dishwashers in the future. Is this a good idea? Will extra space make a difference in noise, function, or looks?

My Miele is installed in a 24" opening. It replaced an Asko that came with trim pieces to fill in the 3/8" gap. I don't particularly like that the gap is wider and more visible with the Miele, but that doesn't seem to affect the dishwasher's function or quietness. I would have the cabinet maker make the full coutout 24" wide (as a "future-proofing" measure) but install a couple of small filler strips in the front to bring the opening down to 23 5/8".

there are quite a few 60cm wide DW's on the market, why go to the hassel for something you may never do?

Hi homepro01, You have given me pause. I checked out the reputation of this seller online and there have been mixed reviews. It seems a lot of the appliance places have mixed reviews! I will make sure that the deal is for a new dishwasher in the box with no scratches and dents and not a customer return. So, thanks for the reality check! lulu88: I suppose it is important to make sure that there are no punctures in the unit, not likely with a stainless steel tub, or with the hoses, but I suppose you don't want any leaks after hooking up the dishwasher. Be careful if the deal says "as is" because then you have no recourse if you find out something is wrong after purchasing it. I saw a couple buy the same fully integrated Optima model from the floor this weekend and it had a small dent and some scratches. The dealer said the retail price was $1,900 and gave it to them for $1,488. Personally, I thought that was still too high for the floor model. I have checked a couple more appliance places around here (San Francisco bay area) and it does appear that the prices for in-stock Mieles are dropping because there is too much inventory. I don't think this is surprising given the current economy and the slow down in construction.

I see you don't live in Calif, ---do you still have hard water? Our water is so bad (Hard) here, that everything gets coated with lime, including the DW, It totalled our old KA in 9 years, so when I bought the Miele Optima, in 2006, I had a water softener connected to the hot side and Miele is connected to the hot side. It has stayed like brand new inside and it has been trouble free as , most the Miele DW's are----Jammer that yours isn't (Jammer = Bummer in Dutch)! We hope yours stays trouble free henceforth! Gary

I have the Excella and love it... If I were going to buy again I'd probably go with the new La Perla that opens the door when itÂs finished the wash program. It's my only complaint with the newer European condensation drying systems. If you do not open the door within a few hours of the cycle completion, the residual moisture redistributes throughout the inside of the tub and starts to smell funky. If you're not getting this feature I'd lean towards saving your money and going with the Inspira... I personally do not have to remove my cutlery tray but if I did I would not like the split cutlery feature. ItÂs more of a pain in the butt when you want to remove it when itÂs filed with silverware. I would consider paying more for the delay function so that you can run it during Âoff peakÂ grid hours for possible savings on your energy bills. IÂd also consider spending more money for the turbidity sensor, quieter insulation package and possibly the new sensor dry feature. The only reason I opted for the more expensive Excella over the Optima 2 years ago was for the auto-load and auto-wash functions [auto wash was not available on the Optima at that time]. I liked the idea of not having to run a full load with the auto-load featureÂ Sorry for rambling, I'm sure all of this will be no help to your decision making process...

It's the salt indicator. You can see it on pg. 13 of your manual. If you want to see how to test your water hardness, look at pg. 11 under "checking your water hardness". That should tell you if you need to add salt. I had to purchase the salt online since the local miele shops don't stock it. Don't know how to turn off the light, other than add the required salt.

I had the cabinet guy make mine 24" wide. The day the appliances came, that morning I pulled out the old dishwasher, set the table saw at 3/8", and riped one of the left over filler strips. I can see it if I look for it, but I'm not planing on looking to much. If I ever get a 24" DW again I'll just pull it off.

My cabinet guy made the opening 23 7/8" for some reason. We added a 1/4" filler strip to make it fit nice. Don't just leave it with a gap.

Thanks for the tips. I called Miele and they said it would be considered improperly installed if it is 24in opening. Not sure if he is implying my warranty would be void.

Improperly installed? That surprises me. I had my dishwasher installed (into a 24" space) by a Miele authorized installer which doubled my warranty to two years.

kgyso - it is improperly installed in a 24" opening per se, but will not void you warranty.
