When you click on 'Bookmarks, click on 'Bookmark this Page' a box opens allowing you to place the bookmark in a folder. You can make whatever folders you want and categorize the site. You can then drag your bookmarks into the proper folders.

When you hit the Bookmarks icon in the toolbar, your bookmarks will be displayed in a box on the left side of your screen. Just right-click on the Bookmarks Toolbar icon and choose New Folder. Name the folder anything you want.

You can also add sub-folders to a folder.

For instance, I have a folder called Recipes. I right-clicked on the folder and created subfolders such as Asian Cooking, Blogs, Forums, Markets, etc. for the various websites I wanted to save. You can do this for any subject.

Then, when you're on a site you like, just drag the icon in the toolbar to the folder. Now right-click on the bookmark and choose Properties. It is here that you can change the name to something that makes the link easier to identify.

I am constantly adding folders and sub-folders for any new subject I'm researching, as this makes it easier to find the sites later on.

I have a huge list of folders, but my list of links has proved invaluable when looking for information later on.

And, by the way, since you have Firefox, have you tried the add-on called Cool Iris? Check it out--you'll love it. Also try the Stumble-Upon toolbar. Both are great and fun.

even easier is to get the add bookmark here add on and you just right click on any of your folders and select the bookmark here option which opens the box letting you name the bookmark and add tags etc. I love that add on.

Bookmarks are the only thing I don't like about FF, I like IE's. I have never had a lot of book marks and just like the list in the open, not in folders.

you don't have to do folders in ff if you do not want to you can just leave them in one long list in the bookmarks area. Folders only make it easier to categorize and find them.

loomis: I'd like to stay away from toolbars and folders if possible. My intentions are to shorten my bookmark list and to keep as few folders as possible.

ravencajun: I did download "add bookmark add on" I'll check that out along with zep's tutorial.

stargazzer: I do have Favorites mastered in IE. I love the "dropdown boxes".(or whatever they are called)

I'm looking for a way to simplify in Firefox the way that I have them in IE.
When I downloaded Firefox, the items that were in IE automatically transferred over as they were in IE. But, of course, the terminology is totally different!!! Now I'm trying to learn the easiest way to do the same in Firefox. I'll explore, and surely be back for more guidance!

PLEASE do, I am coming over from IE also, and have found FF to be completely unnerving as the bookmarking goes. Very difficult to understand.
I had just rearranged all my bookmarks and deleted dead links etc. in IE, and imported to FF, what a darn mess now, and I don't even know where to begin, so when you get some stats, please keep it simple, and let me in on the info?

Although I can still get the list of bookmarks over to the left in FF, I have put all of them up on the Bookmarks Toolbar, where I have them organized under several headings, such as Books, Crafts, Financial, Media, Shopping, and so on. When I click on any of these, I get a drop-down menu, and on some of the menus, I have sub-headings; for instance, under Crafts, I have a folder called "buying," which contains sites where I buy fabrics or paint and other things online, and other folders for patterns, message boards, magazines, tips, and videos. You get the idea.

When you want to create a new bookmark, the "Bookmark this page," box that comes up offers as the first location to put the new one, "Bookmarks Menu," but you can click on the quotation-like mark just to the right of that and it will change to "Bookmarks Toolbar." Then click on the "V" over to the right so you can see all the items on your Bookmarks toolbar and choose one of them to put the new one into.

So that I can cram more items onto the toolbar, I make 2 or 3 letter abbreviations for their names, and I even have one heading for all the different sites that I use the most often.
