Hawaii webcam Windows plug-in needed?!?

Hi gang!

99% of the time, I'm on this sites' Paint & Home-Dec/Conversations Forums, & occasionally peek in here...

"Plug-in" help needed here-
* I can't view a Waikiki-beach webcam I used to enjoy checking on my pre-laptop, old Gateway computer.
* Now, on my newer (summer 2012) Dell-Inspiron laptop, this State of Hawaii webcam says it needs a Media-player plug-in!
* Huh...?!??! I've got the newest MP! Windows7 Home-Premium too.
* I use Firefox 99% of the time.
* Haven't tried using the cam thru IE yet '...

Any help would be stud!

Umm, Googling "Hawaii webcams" only brings up over 5 million hits. How about you provide the link you are questioning so help might be better provided perhaps.

I have a HP laptop with windows 7 so it may not be the same but if I click on the start button and type webcam in the search programs and files box my webcam is the first thing listed in the search result. I can right click on the name of the webcam and select send to and choose desktop. it will make a shortcut on the desktop. Or I can choose pin to taskbar or pin to start menu from the drop down list. This may not help you at all but thought I would suggest trying.

Hi, Jane. The computer seems to be working great. It's noticeably faster. I don't think that the mouse and keyboard not working was bc. of the RAM. One possibility is that I had put the USB devices back in any USB port - which I thought should be no problem - but may have been. maybe it was especially too much since there were 3 USB devices in new ports. The other possibility is that in getting rid of the dust bunnies - blowing the dust out with compressed air, that I got a bit of dust on the power supply plug/port. I'm not sure - but one place I googled (perhaps a cnet forum?) reported the keyboard and mouse not working bc. dust got into that area. They had unplugged the power cord - cleaned out any dust - and tried again. I did both. Unplugged the power cord and dusted the area again - and replugged the USB devices into the right ports. I also started by just plugging in the keyboard and mouse. Once I was up and running, I plugged the microphone back in. So I don't know what caused the temporary disabling of mouse and keyboard - but I"m pretty sure it wasn't too much RAM - just something I did when I was messing with the innards or replugging devices back in. All seems to be great now. I put it off forever too. I'm pretty sure that I went to Crucial's website (on the computer I wanted to upgrade) and let it scan the computer to determine how much RAM (and what type) it could use. Using the virtual machine for running older xp programs is a very good idea, however you have to understand how to set it up and you might want to have someone help you with that if you choose to get a newer version of windows. The 2 gigs is the amount of RAM memory it has and for xp that should be workable. As to why it is so slow, lots of things can contribute to that from infection, malware, number of programs, and possibly it needs a defrag and disc cleanup. If you are buying it from a business ask for them to do the cleanups before you buy it. Check out the websites for the software you are using they often times offer an updated driver etc to have the program work on the newer version of windows. For a business I would really recommend moving to at least windows 7 for security reasons since very soon Microsoft will not be providing any type of updates including security related ones. I also just read an article about some of the antivirus companies moving away from supporting xp. It really is going to be fairly obsolete after the end of life date. So for the safety of your files etc you will want to be looking to move forward.

By sound system do you mean the sound drivers in as per viewed in control panel or a physical system of speakers and amps recognized by the computer? It could be one of many things if you have a complicated sound system. but if you only have a pair of speakers plugged in directly to the laptop we just might be able to help out. do give us details.

I don't use firefox but installed it today to check a webpage.. so I tired it on the Hawaii video. See my pic ? ... (cam video and sound works fine in IE11 preview win8.1)

Searched firefox plugin site and they show the plug in at page link below for some versions of windows. But not win8.

Here's what you need to do in Firefox to make this particular web site work,

To play Windows Media in Firefox, you need the Windows Media Player browser plugin installed. There are two different versions:

The original, which is usually included with Windows up until XP. The new version, specifically developed for Windows XP and above, which is only available by download.

Note: Even if you already have Windows Media Player installed, you may still be missing the plugin required to play back Windows Media audio and video embedded in web pages.

See link. You will need to go into About: config and change a value to true, as instructed on the link I have provided.

My Firefox would not work on the web page either. I went through the instructions and it works now.

EDIT : I installed the plug-in from mike link that he provided, but had to do the about:config thing to make it work.

I've always enjoyed this cam! I live in Fargo, ND...and it can get damn cold up here! Seeing what's happening in the middle of the pacific is a nice distraction obviously!
We were there in '87 on our Honeymoon (Oahu & Kauai), and again in June 2009 for DD's HS-Grad. present (Oahu & Maui).
So...corny as it sounds, this means a lot to me.

I don't understand though why we have to jump thru so many obscure hoops to make certain features work...siiiigghh!
