kids' bath counters
Comments (12)I am doing a kids' bath, and I'm doing granite. If you do a remnant, you can get it really cheap - in my case, a couple of hundred cheaper than the cultured marble (plastic) - which, if white, looks nice and lasts forever - won't stain, either. But with a double sink, 72" long, I am getting granite for $450-800 including the sink cutouts (I haven't settled on one yet), and the plastic was $900+. Also, in Chicago, there is a HOBO store (an outlet type of store) that sells prefab bathroom granite tops for no lie, $179 a piece. Look around! One of the Home Depots in the Chicago area also had precut/prefab pieces for $25 a square foot....See Morehelp - bathroom redo decisions 2 parts
Comments (14)My son is just finishing up a bathroom redo. He had water leaking into the kitchen below the bathroom. To correct the leak he had to remove the tub, tile surround and floor tile so that meant the vanity and toilet had to go too. One of his friends told him to file a claim with his insurance company. He was pleasantly surprised when they gave him a check that amounted to about half of the total renovation cost. So if you haven't done so already file a claim with your insurance company. His bathroom is a simliar set up to yours except his vanity is 66 inches long. His toilet is also between the vanity and tub like yours. He has another bathroom with a tub so he decided to do a shower only in this bathroom. He opted for the Kohler cast iron shower pan that is meant to replace a 30x60 tub. His vanity will be natural maple. He found a remnant at a fabricator's and will be using black pearl granite for the countertop. Just for some ideas for you here is his before And here is a during: He used Dal Tiles Ayers Rock Majestic Mound porcelain tile with 13x20 tiles on the wall and 20x20 on the floor. He is waiting on shower doors and his counter top so I can't post finished pics yet but we think it already looks great. My daughter did a small bath remodel this past spring she used Dal Tiles Florentine porcelain tile. She kept her tub and used 12x24 around it with 24x24 on the floors. Since she had no linen closet in her house she opted to sacrifice sink/countertop space for tall storage. Her sink base is 24 inches and the tall cabinet is 18 inches. She used a remnant of quartz for her countertop. Here are a couple shots of her bathroom. Good luck on your remodel This post was edited by badgergal on Wed, Nov 5, 14 at 16:30...See MoreMore granite backsplash help, please!
Comments (19)Hey, Cloud! Is yours the blue kitchen, by chance?! When they did the first installation and I had my doubts, I start searching GW and found someone's beautiful blue kitchen w/ full granite backsplash, and I was indeed trying to find shots of well done installs. I couldn't quite find a close-in shot among your earlier photos...thanks so much. So helpful. My two windows are undercabinet cutouts (about 4-5" of space between window bottoms and counter), and while the installer offered a lip/sill as an option, I was looking for a cleaner look to the facade of the backsplash -- plus, more corners sticking out just meant more that would risk getting chipped. I can just see us sliding our glass salt/pepper shakers across the cabinet and constantly hitting those corners. :) Below is a profile shot of one of the windows...latest version. I could've cropped the pic more closely, but then you'd all miss seeing my refrigerator in the background that's been parked in our family room for six months!!!! Maybe it hurts less to insert some humor into all of this. This was their 'best we can do, ma'am' on Monday. I'm just noticing NOW that they left the upper joint completely uncaulked! And see the gloppy line silicone at the lower edge? They didn't even try to tool it. The company owner, who was there, said that since it seemed I was so bothered by seeing the black line in between granite pieces, he said a bead of caulk would be better. Ugh...I'm just so done. Life really is too short so, yes, I'm picking my battles and trying to move on....obviously more difficult than it sounds, as I sat bolt upright in bed at 4 a.m. this morning, thinking about my kitchen. Here's another question for ya: the end portion of your backsplash that faces the window? Is that as glassy-polished as your countertop surface? See the end edge of the window, the piece on the left? All of the straight edges in my kitchen look just as dull. In this pic, you can see side by side the difference in glossiness....normal? Edited/Added: or, maybe, is this similar to wood and its end grain? And that the flat surface of the granite can be polished to glassy smoothness, but the end/edge surfaces, not so much? Comments (2)That's certainly true. However, the prefab piece does need to be cut and installed, adding to its cost. Any idea what it would cost to install a tile backsplash? Say, a 6" high tile at $6/sq foot?...See Moregmp3
