    WANTED: Plumerias--need some info

    Q

Renee, I bought some cuttings from a guy in the French Market in New Orleans a few years ago. I think they were 3 for $10. Two of them rooted and survived. I grew them about 3 or 4 years before I finally gave them to a friend. First, you must bring them inside every winter. They are not winter hardy here. Every winter they will go dormant and all leaves will drop off, looking like deer antlers. When it gets warm, they will sprout leaves. If I remember correctly, it must be very warm before the leaves start. Right now I would give them a good shot of fertilizer. Stoke's Tropicals catalog recommends 8-14-10 fertilizer. You could use 8-8-8 and give it a small extra shot of super-phosphate to bring up the middle number. I put mine in the sun and I watered daily. They are absolutely beautiful and smell so good. Have you tried the plumeria forum for more information here on Gardenweb? Good luck. - Terry

Info needed on 2 trees I want to plant in Houston area

    Q

dan - Longleaf pines are very beautiful trees. The wood is stronger than other southern pines so they withstand hurricanes better. I planted 100 containerized seedlings (plugs) last spring. They did fairly well but I had some losses due to drought. I ordered more containerized seedlings this year to replace the losses and expand the longleaf pine groves this year. LLPs are very sensitive to provenance so it's best to buy seedlings grown from trees in your area. As Alabama says, they spend a year or two in the grass stage while they grow a long taproot (several feet long), then they take off. When they are in the grass stage, keep the weeds down around them - they need sun. I've seen 2-3 ft seedlings in pots that were too small to accommodate the taproot so I didn't buy them. Most magnolias don't need much or any shade. There are exceptions so do research on the varieties. I planted several magnolias planted in full sun as part of a wind screen - they are tough. They are reported to do well in hurricanes - mine were flooded this year during a Cat 1 hurricane - they were fine afterwards. If fall color is on your list, consider a tupelo/black gum tree. They have spectacular color that continues into December here. People say they grow slow but my small (3-4') trees put on at least 2 ft of new growth in their first year, during a drought. They also have long taproots. I didn't lose any tupelos during the last big hurricane.

When the stalks die out you trim them back to the ground and dig them up, usually around November for me probuably earlier for you. It is safe to replant them when the ground is above freezing to be safe you should wait til all danger of that is past May for me, maybe June for you? someone who lives in your zone might have a better timeline for you. If you have seeds to plant you have to nick them before planting them so they will germinate (think its called strafing?)

Hardwood Floors? What Do You Want? Do They Listen?

You mentioned Orange County, CA in another thread and concerns over humidity. I lived in the city of Orange in my early twenties and don't recall anything excessive. Prolonged periods of high or low humidity is what can cause issues and not four or five days here and there. Looking at the past year in Orange itself doesn't ring alarm bells. Averages are in the 60’s from my glance. I didn't see 80% I did most of my work in SW Florida where humidity was much higher. The work was anywhere from beachfront, island, to twenty miles inland, but before the days of five inch wide solid planks. Then it was more three inch solid. Yes there were a few issues here and there especially with stilt homes that had no climate control underneath (open to air). That’s all changed now with nearly all homes using those areas for game rooms, guest bedrooms and the like. As far as concrete slab sub floors, which I’m guessing you probably have, engineered floors are all over the place. No issues. Be careful with the reviews you read. Many are probably a matter of installation related failures and lack of awareness, especially with DIY’ers and inexperienced installers. Think about these three M’s Moisture testing - material, subfloor Moisture awareness - in, and around the home. Before and after Moisture control - barriers

    Favorite food store?
Trader Joe's, but it's 400 miles away. We have a food routine when we go 'to town': Costco, Cash & Carry (a restaurant supply-Jessy's right, you can find all kinds of interesting things, and Super 1 Foods, a local chain with great produce and a big, uncrowded, clean store. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with our little local Harvest Foods.

    Wine or beer?
    Wine.

    Tea or coffee?
Coffee in the morning, tea sometimes .

Favorite dessert? Something chocolate, though I never met a dessert I didn't like.

    Here's me...

    What's your favorite color?
    Kitchen related: Black/cream/green
Me related: brown, green, red, pink, black

Are you traditional? Modern? Contemporary? Eclectic, or??
What's that called? Transitional? Between Contemporary and traditional... definitely not modern

    What's your dream meal?
Something that tastes like it takes hours to prepare with complex flavors--most often if prepared by someone who has hours of time to do this. If I have time, I don't mind doing it! Just went back to work full-time though, so now quicker meals are the norm. I love fresh, real food.

What's your nightmare meal? Fast food, packaged food with no flavor

Place you'd most like to visit? Europe, never been! Mostly Italy, France, Greece and Germany

Cuisine you want to try? Tried pretty much everything!

Cuisine you dislike? Scared of raw fish sushi--otherwise adventurous!

Favorite food store? Trader Joe's, Whole Foods

Wine or beer? Definitely red wine. Like microbrews too, though!

Tea or coffee? Coffee, black. Flavored Decaf for dessert.

Favorite dessert? Chocolate! Lemon is a close second. Love Sol's MLCs and Ann's Chocolate Bread & Butter Pudding with Vanilla Sauce (someone actually called me a pastry chef after serving that one!--thanks ann!)

I'm very easy going, and other than lima beans, I'll try just about anything!

Sorry partner I have been so busy lately I hadn't the time to check this side of the forum LOL

What's your favorite color? My favorite color is purple, but my kitchen hopefully this summer will become mustard yellow or harvest gold if you remember the appliances.

Are you traditional? Modern? Contemporary? Eclectic, or?? I am more of a vintage kinda gal, give me some old fire king and I am happy. Love old and different and unusual things

What's your dream meal? Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and lemonade. Can you tell I am ready for summer and warm weather?
What's your nightmare meal? Can't think of a nightmare meal, but being preganant some things just don't sit well.

Place you'd most like to visit? Anywhere
Cuisine you want to try? Just about anything, we don't get much variety in the middle of Nebraska
Cuisine you dislike? Right now I can't handle much Italian, but that only happens when I am pregnant.
Favorite food store? Well considering our only shopping is a Jack and Jill and our Local Grocery Kart my favorite would be any in a larger city.
Wine or beer? Neither right now with the baby to be but normally beer
    Tea or coffee?Tea
Favorite dessert? Strawberry shortcake and homemade ice cream

We are pretty easy going around here, I stay at home with the girls and with no places to eat out I do all our cooking at home. I do enjoy canning each spring and summer and have tried some bread baking.

    What's your favorite color? blue
Are you traditional? Modern? Contemporary? Eclectic, or?? Combination of traditional and electic. I collect porcelain and ironstone pottery the most. I love antiques. (But nothing too dear, just the cheap stuff ; P)
What's your dream meal? I have no idea, although I know I haven't had a dream meal in a while! LOL No wait, probably a HUGE seafood platter.
What's your nightmare meal? Where everything has dairy in it. I can't have ANY dairy because my daughter has a cow's milk protein allergy! :(
Place you'd most like to visit? Europe, Greece, Istanbul
Cuisine you want to try? Greek
Cuisine you dislike? Mexican or anything hot and spicy
    Favorite food store? Wegman's? I don't know.
