Metal tiles in old shower stall

Now own my folks home. Shower from the 50's. Thin metal 6x6 tiles that have rotted at the bottom of the last tiles that meet ceramic bull nose to shower pan.but I have fixed rot with bondo.

The tiles were repainted years ago .....guess I can do that with valspar kitchen/bath, but any ideas for a better look?

Rebath wants $4500 to replace stall.

You undoubtedly have water damage behind the wall. You're talking half assed bandaids when you really should be talking total gut job. If you read enough posts on here and own some tools, you can DIY the whole job and save quite a bit of money. Otherwise, that $4500 quote will continue to get larger as the water damage continues to get worse. And never seal water damage behind a surface applied "solution". The damage is still there, and so is the mold. Plus you have old fixtures behind the wall, and the fixtures are probably not in the best condition and could fail at any time along with your "repair".

Rebath is bidding really high.

Bondo is not the answer, nor is paint.

Rip it out, tiles and pan, all the way to whatever studs are left behind and under the shower and see how much water damage you have. In the worst case, you may not have much of a floor under that shower and are a few weeks away from landing in the basement. In the best case you will have some staining and maybe a couple of studs need to be replaced.

Replacing it with a new shower pan (or a tub), and proper waterproof materials on the walls, followed by some nice porcelain tile can be a couple thousand ... but it's going to last.

Get several bids, especially from small licensed contractors who don't have fancy showrooms. Ask around and see if your friends know a good one. My neighbor keeps steadily busy by word of mouth, has no showroom, and has redone half the houses in the neighborhood.

So long as the shower pan is in good shape, it can be done. Most plumbing supply shops will carry "dummy" drain covers that sit on top of your existing drain cover, thereby allowing another layer of tile without pulling any of the old tile up. Make sure you scuff the face of the old tile well, so that the thinset has something to get a good "bite" on, and use a high latex content thinset, such as Mapei's Kerabond thinset mixed with their Keralastic latex additive.

Looking at your video, I would think it is advisable to replace the entire shower. I know it's easy for me to say, and you would have to live through the demolition process. But two things, #1 you would know that the entire shower is done properly and with proper/up to date waterproofing methods, and #2 you would actually be free to design a shower exactly how you want it and not be limited to 70 year old colours/materials.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. As Bill implied, there is a way to fix it properly, but it probably will cost more than what you are considering. I'd assume it would be a gut job of the shower. It sounds like it's rotted out. But I think you are looking for a more cosmetic solution to get it out on the market and the future buyers can deal with the proper bathroom remodel if they want to. If that is the case, you might want to look into a couple of cheaper/temporary options such as: Refinishing your bathroom tile (essentially a company comes in and spray paints over your tile, here is an example) or covering your shower with a new liner

Thanks for the response. Attached are 2 pics - the first is from inside the shower stall and the second is from outside. The water is leaking across the entire length of the door. I could see bubbles of water under the caulk - you should be able to see it in the picture. My guess is the handyman did not properly clean the joint after cutting out the old caulk. Let me know if you think it is something else.

Rebath is expensive and they only cover up the problem. I had them out to give me an estimate. I am getting a new Swanstone base and full tile for less than they quoted me for a plastic cover-up.
