Phones/tablets with stylus

I was going to evaluate which smartphones would be useful for my 80-years old mother. Someone at work suggested that a larger screen might be useful in case she has trouble seeing/reading "small" screens and someone else suggested models that have a pen or stylus in case she wants to write emails so she will not have trouble using those electronic keyboards.

The unit could be a tablet too as long as it has features to allow her to use as a phone (meaning a smartphone not doing calls like in Skype).

Thoughts/suggestions?

Note to self: noticed that Smasung Note 3 is only available on Verizon instead of her current provider, ATT

Maybe it's a regional thing but AT&T offers the Note 3 around here. I believe the Note 4 is due out very soon (which will make the Note 3 available at a nice discount).

Frankly Mom might be better off with a basic cell phone and a tablet. With a true tablet, she could have a much bigger screen.

Both the Note and most tablets can be paired with a Bluetooth keyboard if she doesn't want to tap at a screen.

Smart phone? Nope, I still have the same old stupid phone, and I've never learned how to text and the phone is seldom charged anyway, Elery and I currnetly have 6,000 minutes to use on the account, LOL. However, Elery has an iPod that I bought him for a Christmas/birthday gift, so I'm going to check out that link. yes it does and also I use an eraser pen it is just like a mechanical pencil but it has just an eraser in it that you can move down as it wears. I also have used a cuticle stick the one I have has one rubbery end and one pointy end.

So many good suggestions - thank you all. I think I will try the Otterbox. It will make DH happy since he researched it plus it does offer good protection. DH really did all his homework - he also bought the 2 year full protection plan' and a stylus. Checking the reviews I read that many complained about the difficulty in installing it and that Otterbox's own video wasn't too enlightening. many also mentioned that it's not something that's easy to put on and take off. Good point about the foldable headphones. DH doesn't care for ear buds so he'd prefer them too. I have a Kindle eReader and all of my books transferred to the Fire. I have subscribed to several free Kindle sites but I really find the best recommendations are when KT members mention titles they've found and post about it. The number of books are overwhelming and it can be hard to pick the good ones from the mass of mediocre books. DH paid the extra $15 so I don't get any of Amazon's "special offers" (a.k.a. advertisements) but I did notice today that there are small adds on the top of some pages. So I guess I'll have to install Adblock Plus. And I should download Avast too. Pammyfay I got a chuckle out of your suggestion to pick up a little pouch for my charger and earphones. It's amazing how quickly the cables, connectors, chargers and other accessories for these devices multiply. I started out with a small clear plastic zippered pouch to hold the cables and chargers for my cell phone and iPod. Then when DH gave me the eReader I bought a slightly larger one. I have so many duplicates that I finally labeled them and I now keep one set at home, another in the car and a third set at our vacation house. I'm sure I'll be hitting the 'Mayday' button regularly. I've already jotted down a few questions. I'll save Raven's link to the 12 tips - there are 5 or 6 that are useful now and the others might come in handy in the future. May I suggest that if you have an ATT store close, that you take her in and have them demonstrate phones for her. I'm 74 and it helped me a lot....

I agree with John and Jean. Even for someone who's somewhat "tech" savvy, it's so important to actually go in, get a "feel" for the phone and actually push some buttons/swipe some screens. :) It may be that she doesn't need or may not want to contend with layers of technology. Or...she may turn out to be my hero and be a savvy 80 year old who will be texting, googling and using google maps. :)

I agree with the other responders, except...
Im older with fingers that aren't warm and moist enough to operate most touch screens. I started with a Samsung Note II, then later a Note III, and now an LG G3. The stylus was a lifesaver for me, otherwise the touch screens usually wouldn't work for me. With the G3 I bought a tablet stylus that I can clip onto the phone case. Whatever you get you might want to try using a stylus, because it might make things easier for older hands.

I am impressed. My Mom is 85 and would never touch technology while most of her friends Skype with their grand kids and stuff.

I like my smart phone when out and about but at home I love my tablet. I bought a blue tooth keyboard case for my tablet so have the best of both worlds. Mary

I have not seen these Bluetooth Keyboards that y'all mention. Someone care to elaborate?

ZAGG makes a nice one that is standalone but it's pricey but they have it at Walmart. You can go to walmart and get a generic stand alone Bluetooth keyboard with rubber keys for like $10-$20 I think it was. They also had a generic tablet case with a keyboard that had rubber keys at Walmart for like $10. I like the a mini keyboard with the solid plastic keys on a spring so that's what my case has and my case is made specifically to fit my device to line up all openings for the buttons on my tablet and the keyboard has magnets so if I just want to take the case the keyboard comes off the case.

You can also find tablet cases with keyboards that plug into the minis USB instead of using Bluetooth. My friend has one for her tablet and it works just as good as mine and hers was generic to fit any tablet and has plastic keys with the spring underneath. If you search on amazon for your model tablet and put keyboard case after it you can see what is available or search generic tablet keyboard cases and such. Mary
