how many cfms for small kitchen but large area

Hi -
I was wondering whether any of you could help me figure out which range hood to buy. There are so many variables, and from my online research, I might need anywhere from 300 or 1000 cfms! This is too much of a range to be able to make a decision!

Here are the details of my situation (apologies if I'm providing too much info):

- The range is gas, 30".
- The kitchen is 952 cubic feet
- The kitchen is open to the dining family room. This room is 2592 cubic feet
- The kitchen has a 14" beam along the top which will stop a lot of smells from permeating the rest of the house, I would imagine.
- The house was built in the 1950's; walls are not insulated; has a fireplace. This house is not tight.
- hood will be vented straight up out the attic. House is one storey.

There is a hood that is 600 cfms with a 6" pipe. Will this do?
