Thermador Double Oven - worth repairing or start new?

I Bake alot....Dacor/Miele/Thermador Double Oven?
Comments (14)I think if you set the oven to one temp and put your dish in and cook it you might not notice so much that it has a problem. If you turn up the temp from 350° to 400° it will read the temp as 400° immediately and the oven element will continue to oscillate (just as it does when finished preheating)and verrry slowly increase in temp over 20 minutes for the wall oven and it was initially 60 minutes for the range oven. The worst part was if you lost heat opening the door to bake cookies-multiple batches it would just continue to lose temp and no way for it to make up for the heat loss, so pretty soon you are trying to bake cookies at 250°. Dacor said that it was a recognized issue and they sent a new computer board, but it didnÂt fix it. I didnÂt realize at first that the range oven had the same problem because I tended to use it to bake or roast long term. Turning them off and on made no difference-that was my first thought. The only way I could get the oven to heat again was to turn the oven up to 550° and make the differential more than 200 degrees and watch the temp very carefully and turn it back to whatever temp I wanted it to be. The oscillation is meant to keep the temperature within very narrow parameters but it has no way to make up for increased heat loss of open doors or cold food load. The wall oven had the additional problem that the preheat would kick off long before it reached temp even though it would say it was preheated it was around 100 degrees too low and some functions the temp was way off. This may have been able to be fixed by calibration, but in all the service calls, Dacor did not choose to do this. It also baked unevenly. The door was on crooked and that could not be fixed. If you want to check your oven, you need an independent thermometer. I used an oven thermometer, but checked it with my range oven that did seem to be the right temp if preheated long enough. I also checked its lag time by placing the cold thermometer in a well heated 450° oven. It took 5 minutes to read 450°. This was the best I could do as far as trouble shooting myself and try to figure out why recipes I had made for years were not coming out right. Dacor offered me a third oven, to be delivered "the next week" but I never heard from them for the next month and no one would return my calls. I ended up going back to the original dealer and Dacor bought both appliances back. Believe me IÂve baked for along time and I did everything to try to get the ovens to work, tried every function and IÂm getting a headache just thinking about it! I have since come across 2 people with the high end Dacor oven and they have problems with food not getting done but the people did not know why. I also talked to an appliance person who had the same oven as I do and said she had no problems but didnÂt use it very much. Comments (14)You are lucky, I have a 24" Jenn Air double wall oven set in brick, that is 20+ years old, and playing up. The only replacement I can find is a Maytag. I'm replacing mine and it will cost less than $1,500 installed. You will spend more in repairing than replacing in the long run. I put a thermocouple in the top oven the oven to see how out is was. Set the oven to 350F and watched the readout - it got as high as 672F before settling down to ~400F. Comments (11)We landed at Thermador through a bit of a roundabout route. Our kitchen designer had originally recommended the Gaggenau wall oven because the side swing door provided meaningful utility in our prior layout (the new layout will work OK with either style door). We had decided we wanted an induction cooktop and he recommended the Gaggenau induction cooktop because of its fairly shallow depth. We then went to a BSH showroom and took a look at both the Gaggenau and Thermador induction cooktops. We couldn't find enough functionality difference in the cooktop to support the significant price differential (the magnetic knob was neat but we are confident we can live without it) so decided to drop down to the Thermador cooktop. (We had also looked at Monogram, but shied away from the required 12" deep clearance to combustibles that unit requires). We liked the high power, available boost on all zones and generally low power sharing that the Thermador induction cooktop provides. We had separately decided on the Bosch 800 series dishwasher because of the top Consumer Reports ratings, the now available cutlery rack and reasonable price compared to most of the Miele dishwashers. Having then dropped down to the Thermador cooktop, on one of our final visits to the local appliance store, the sales person with whom we were dealing (who is excellent and knows his stuff cold) mentioned that if we were going to get a Bosch dishwasher and Thermador cooktop, we might consider the Thermador oven and dishwasher since the Thermador dishwasher is basically the same as the Bosch dishwasher. That's about as far as we've gotten. If there's another route we should be considering, nothing is locked in stone except: we would like a very good dishwasher (doesn't have to be the world's best, but very good and quiet is a requirement), we would like a 36" induction cooktop, we would like a good double wall oven and the double wall oven doesn't need any microwave functionality since we're getting the Advantium....See MoreAnyone out there own Thermador's MED302ES double oven

Wow I had almost ordered the same one the other day with the combo micro-convection oven until I did a bunch of research and found horrible posts all over the internet about Thermador. When one starts doing research on the internet one tends to find tons of complaints about most everything so it is so difficult to make the right decision!! I feel your pain! lol Finally I figured the BEST place to find the answers was to call my trusty repairman that I have used for years and ask him what oven he would recommend for me. He would know what are the best and worst appliances. I asked him what are some of the best ones and which ones should I stay away from. His words: "I'm sorry to tell you but there are no reliable appliances out there. All the American made appliances are built to last 5 years and there are some that look like they've been put together with toy parts. They are built to cut costs and compete. They are not built like your Moms or your Grandmothers were built. Try to find something with REAL KNOBS (some are fake attached to a computer board) because the biggest problem I see is that the "touchpad" types blow and the whole board has to be replaced. ($$$$$$$- caching caching). Never buy LG- they are the worst. As for Foreign made, It is very difficult to find people who can service them not to mention the repair expense, and it can take quite a while to get parts". So I told him that I had planned on getting a Thermador oven and his advise was such that if I'm stuck on going Foreign that I should do the research and go with the most reliable one. I mentioned that I am now steering towards the Miele (love my dishwasher) and he said he had never worked on them because he was not certified but had heard they were good and if I could find mostly good reviews and not many complaints then I should either go that option, or just go with the American made GE or Whirlpool and pay for the 5 year coverage plan. He also said to get coverage plan for foreign. If you Google "who makes what appliances" you will find a list that tells you Bosch makes Thermador. I did not know that until last night. Bosch is also supposed to be good but I have found slews of complaints. Based on all the information I have put together I have decided to spend a little more and go with Miele. Miele makes Miele and that is it. They are a family owned company and notorious for quality and customer satisfaction. I am going to copy and paste some links to info that I have scrounged up. LOOK AT THESE COMPLAINTS ON "CONSUMER AFAIRS": http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/thermador.html I have not found any complaints on Miele ovens but some favorable reviews on "Epinions". There are some complaints on the dishwashers but I can tell you if they are not installed properly by certified Miele guy they will not drain properly so that's probably where some of the complaints come from. I have had a Miela "Diamante" for three years and not one problem. It's the best dishwasher I have owned and I have owned many. I also own Miele vacuum and it is THE BEST!
