It sounds like the shell is incompatible with MS 8.1 so I will uninstall it before I upgrade. One poster said he would recommend 8.1 without the shell. He really liked it.

That's what I thought too, not sure how big the upgrade is, but I would consider creating a restore point. I thought this was also automatically installed through a Microsoft up-date (Win 8.1). Do you know if that's true?

I read that....it would be. I am going on a bus tour during the release period. I will remove the shell before I leave just in case and make sure my update setting is NOT on automatic. My update settings get change quite often for some reason. I think they want to over ride my decisions.

Noteworthy caveat: You are required to have a personal Windows Live account or the enterprise equivalent in order to finish the installation. I do not like that idea.

Cloud storage: SkyDrive is the default location for saving documents as opposed to the C: drive, for example. I do not like that idea either. I like my stuff on my computer.

They would move our stuff to an online site????? I don't even know what sky drive is and doesn't sound good to me. I read the info on the site you mentioned and searched for info on other sites. I will just stick with Classic Shell. The people who post and/or work at classic shell are not happy campers. The F word was used frequently. All of this makes me wonder what the next OS will be like.

I did some more searching and one poster said it would be a windows update. I copied and pasted his statement and put the link in.

Launched the update (and yes it is an update - KB2849363 - it gets installed by Windows Update, configured as an update at restart, etc.). It installed and went through the whole configuring updates sequence at reboot, and voila! The Go to Store link comes up when I get to the desktop.

And that's all it does. If you click Go to Store, that's exactly what you do. You go to the Store. That's it. Search and find nothing.

What I've read and understand... windows automatic updates installs the store item for you to decide to install or not from the store the 8.1 upgrade.

I assume it will be much like 8.1 preview and if it errors on the live login it defaults to a local non email login. Many were using felonious email account names just for that purpose.

8.1 preview you can right click folders and/or files and tell it skydrive or not or both by save local copy. Which I use the local copy only on things I use frequently. I would hope the final 8.1 will do that save local copy automatically for a few days unless manually checked or marked not to..

They're still not finished with 8.1 final. So nobody knows the changes we will see on Oct 18 ,... probably as an upgrade to the RTm and download intergrated install withl at 8.1 upgrade or fresh iso upgrade last moment download install.

If a user is unhappy with it, they may not be able to remove it. Reformatting it will work for some but not for others. I will be able to remove it because I have the reformatting thumb drive from Acer. I don't have a live account so that lets me out also. I am happy with the shell, so will not do the upgrade. It won't be good if this turns out bad and users get angrier than they were.
