Now What?...I'm lost

I posted earlier about MS Word/Excel 2000 update ... took advice and downloaded the updates. Now when I call up the programs I can't open either & just get a blue screen which leaves me no choice but to manually shut down the computer. I tried restoring to a later date before these downloads but still get the blue screen. I checked for updates that were made and nothing is showing up for what I did.

I booted up in safe mode .. didn't help.

I was thinking if I delete both programs from the computer & buy MS Works would that be a good solution? I'm so lost on this & terrified my HD is going to crash. Please excuse my ignorance on all this but I just don't know what to do now. How can I get my files back? I need help so please thanks in advance for any advice.

can you please post a link of the other thread you are referring to, it is very difficult to follow if we can not see what was happening, I wish I could remember everything but my old brain cells just can not cope these days.

The beauty of the new roses you brought home is that they DO NOT need constant "tweaking" as the HTs do. Good pruning advice above - but don't overdo it. Relax, try leaving them alone for a while (except for water, of course). They need time to settle in and deal with growing new roots. DO NOT use HT pruning techniques on them, or as you have noticed, you will not have any bush at all left. Just let them grow for a few months, and then look at them and see what they are doing. I do not prune any of my roses except to take off dead growth, and prune a bit for shape if they are trying to block a path or the driveway, etc. One thing to keep in mind since you are in zone 9 - here in CA, you cannot rely on the size estimates of Austin or even HMF, because in warm climates many Austin roses get MUCH bigger than most sources will tell you. Do you live on the West Coast, or the humid South, or where? Local advice is best, so if you tell us what part of what state you live in, someone from there is likely to see your post and grow Austins, and then you can get more specific advice from locals who grow them near you. Good luck with them - just be patient and do not worry about having to constantly do things to them - they will be much happier left in peace. Jackie

Thank you all for your support it means the world to me. I've always been the type to beat myself up for not knowing how to do the things just right. It would not be so bad if dad's mind wasn't clear as a bell right now. His abuse of his medicine is a real concern for me. I got a call from him today saying he needs his antibiotic for his sinus, well he'll only take one or two and he says it cures his sinus. You and I know this isn't so and even if it does help it's short term, taking the antibiotics like that can cause harm but no one can get this through to my dad. I have had so many problems with doctors in my past that I don't trust them easily. It was me that saved my husband from a possible stroke, his blood pressure was high and I could tell when it was up but with the sleep apne he had to take showed how bad it was. They could not get it down all night so I marched into our dr.'s and told them about this and they looked back at his chart and seen that it was high everytime he went in for a check up. Now why don't they pay more attention to this? This is why I fear looking for yet another doctor. I have no luck with them. Only once did I have a wonderful doctor and within a year my insurance changed and he didn't take it :( He was the one that listen to me about my weight and took test finding that my thyroid was bad. I went through years with a sore throat and my throat closing up at night in my sleep, waking up unable to breath for 10 or so seconds but felt longer and didn't know if I'd get my breath. If it's wasn't for y'all I don't know if I'd be able to be strong for my dad. I never knew it could be so hard. I look at pictures of my grandparents, dads parents and talk to them and wishing they were here. They had a hard life and I can just image that they went through just what I am now. They took care of my great grandmother for 17 years then told my grandmothers brother it was time for him to care for his mother and give them a break. Great grandmother was called little granny and I never seen pictures of her but heard great stories about her, I found a picture of her the other day and I'm so happy to finally seen her, she past away a few years before I was born. Exterior paint-please help, I'm lost!

I have another question. If we decide to paint an accent color for the rest of the exterior doors....and I'm still not sure this is a good idea...we have THREE different styled doors on the back porch. A solid 6-panel, a single French door, and a double French door. Will painting these a color different than the trim highlight the fact that none of the doors match? My gut says yes, and just paint them the trim color. OR...paint just the main door that exits from the house (the double French) the accent color, thus making the other doors secondary and less noticable? I have looked at tan colored paint chips until my eyes cross, and don't like any of them. Now I'm considering going lighter with a cream. The yellow undertones seem to be the better match, but I want something a bit muddy that doesn't read YELLOW from the street. I thought this would be a fun project, but since we're hiring this job out, there's considerable pressure to get it right the first time. We could repaint doors and shutters ourselves, so if we goof on those, it's not a huge deal, but the trim color has to be right.

I know the feeling well!! When I was up in Pasadena(CA) a few years ago(I live in San Diego), I was driving by a Marriott hotel where all the cabinets had been torn out. Mind you, these were not your ordinary cabinets as they were trimmed in rope moulding, etc. Some had wetbar sinks still installed, but most were separate cabinets, with nice countertops still attached. I've kicked myself numerous times for not picking up a couple(there were people with trucks helping themselves). I'll never pass up something like that again!!! patty_cakes

well you could go into add remove programs and find the updates you did which seems to have caused your problem and choose to remove them there.

What I have decided to do since I also had an older version of office suite is change over to open office on my computers it is free and has done everything I needed it to do same as my office from MS. You can choose the format to save things in with open office and i save mine in a .doc format same as MS did so that should I need to share it with some one that has MS office they can open and read it.

If you have your office suite discs you could re-install from them then do your updates fresh. When you were doing these latest updates did it request for you to insert your office discs for verification? It always does that to make sure you do have a legit copy.

I would definitely give open office a try prior to buying anything, you can go ahead and install it along side the one you currently have with no problems.

you want to make sure you get the correct version of open office for your operating system on each pc you put it on.
OpenOffice.org 3.1.0

that gives you 2 places you can download from and read about it.

Thanks Raven...I did go into my add/remove and can't find any recent updates that were made. No I don't have the disks nor did updates ask me for them. (My HD was ripping away at those downloads for a long time)! I was looking into Open Office but didn't know how secure it was. But looking at the amount of downloads it must be.
I can do that but any suggestions on how I can get my old files back? System Restore just isn't giving them to me. I know I should have backed them up before I started all this but I had faith in Microsoft that all would go well. What was I thinking????
Also did you delete your 2000 office since they are now vulnerable? Thanks Raven ...

Your files should still be in your My Documents folder and Open Office will open them.

I have been using OO for some time now both personally, and for Word documents between home and work.

OO will automatically open .doc files. However, when you publish and save a new file on OO you have to change the default association from .odt if you plan to have it Word compatible. It is no problem. When you first save the document the "save file as" window will appear. A user just has to click on the arrowhead and select the Word format of choice. I recommend Word 2007. That's all there is to it.

In the original thread you mentioned having Bitdefender and Spyware Sweeper but you never said if you had checked for updates and ran a full scan with each of these programs.

With so many bad guys out there today determined to get into our computer anyone who has any problem they do not understand should run a full virus and spyware scan. This ensures the computer is clean, it also helps those offering suggestions to know some preliminary action has been taken by the person with the problem.

Have you ran a scan?

To try finding your files if Bob's suggestion fails to locate them click Start, click Search and in the box type *.doc, click OK. This should find all files with the .doc suffix.

If it is only Word you need and not the huge Office program you know there is another program already on your comuter I suppose. I am referring to Wordpad. This is located in Start/Accessories/ Wordpad.

This will open all .doc files but you will have to save your work in .rtf (Rich Text Format) which is understood by almost all other word processing programs including Word. If I only needed word processing I would not waste time and hard drive space on Open Office. Of course if you need to use other programs within Open Office then it is a great choice - and free.
