Air Hockey Tips?

I got Beau an air hockey table. He is 4 years old so I got the 6' instead of the longer one. It keeps score, has crowd noise, timed games.I just found out today from a neighbor boy that it had air. Duh--AIR Hockey! Anyway, any tips I should know about e.g. maintenance, problems, longevity, other kids playing, etc.?

Thanks for sharing any experience that you have.

No tips from me but Jayden and Mason love it! The air part died sometime this year, but they still have fun playing!

Thanks Ellen. I'm glad to hear that your little guys like it. We Cooking Forum folks played air hockey at the cabin at our PFPP get together--we didn't have air and obviously didn't miss it 'cause I didn't know about the air thing!

Thank you! I thought so as well. I insisted he put it in. It tool all of 8 minutes but he was complaining it was a waste of time, and he was paid by the hour and just so long as I didn't complain about the bill... I was not really terribly happy about that. But he did do it. I felt embarrassed to insist but with your opinion I feel better. It's done anyway. Dunno, there was no qualification in the instructions about needing it only if there was no air-quick. It said always, no exceptions, etc. Well, I may have been a ditz-owner, but it's done and I appreciate knowing there's at least one other out there. Thank you tux.

I have worked part time in a vacuum store for over a decade. I would recommend the Miele over the Sterilaire, and add a turbo head (STB 205) for the low pile carpet or even the small powerhead (SEB 217) for low to medium pile. The Miele has more than enough power, excellent filtration, is well made, and offers great product support. I am not familiar with Sterilaire so I checked out their website. Not much info there. The Sterilaire looks messy and combersome to use compared to the Miele. Also Miele's new bare floor brush with the extra swivel makes vacuuming around furniture so much easier. Sterilaire doesn't show their bare floor brush on the website, but I am sure it does not have the double swivel Miele has. Try both vacuums in the store and see what makes you comfortable. Some questions: Who is Sterilaire? How long has the dealer been selling this vacuum? How long has Sterilaire been selling them? Does the 10 year warranty cover everything? Where is it made? I would not spend $1,000 for a vacuum the dealer has carried for less than two years, unless it already had an established reputation.

I think cloudy christine may have one solution. Letting any whole wheat dough rest for 15-20 minutes after the initial quick knead really makes a difference. The liquid is absorbed and distributes itself evenly. The hard, dry bits of bran or whatever else that's in the dough soften. Then when you return to finish the full kneading you have a much better sense of whether or not you need to add a bit more liquid or a bit more flour. It's the autolyse principle. Also, I think you might want to knead a 50% whole wheat flour dough more. That's one of the reasons I like using my bread machine. It does all the heavy work. And, as others have mentioned, adding some vital wheat gluten is also a good idea. One problem may be the liquid from the cooked oatmeal. Everyone's leftover oatmeal is different: some might have really, super thick oatmeal, while others have a thin gruel. It's an imprecise ingredient. That's why letting the dough rest so all the liquid is evenly distributed might be an important step as well as kneading longer. The recipe looks pretty good, and I'd like to try it.

Your GC doesn't know?! Make him call/visit the permitting authority and ask. Give him the DW model and a copy of the install sheet (I think that's where Miele puts the info) explaining why how the Miele works negates the need for an air gap. Make him earn his money by finding this out for you since he should know. If he won't do it, go in yourself armed with the info. Write down what was told to you and by whom along with the date you visited. That way when inspection is done, you have back-up if inspector questions it. Sorry....I GC'd my whole house reno so I feel the homeowner is entitled to know the laws. Side note: My municipality supposedly enforces the make-up air requirement, like most states do, for range hoods over 400cfm. I put in a 600cfm beauty and no one along the inspection path ever asked me about it at all, other than to admire it. I was a bit worried, but it turned out fine. I was really quite shocked at how little the final inspector looked around and enforced code. My island outlets weren't to code, but the inspector never once looked at them. It was a cursory 5 minute glance through my house, and he was gone. Long story short--your inspector might not even care about the air gap.

Despite what you may think, drinking doesn't make you a better player. (Same advice for ping pong, btw)

You crack me up -- AIR hockey. Sounds like something I'd do.

My sons had air hockey and loved it. I put it away in the attic and was surprised to find that the air part still worked after many many years. Unfortunately the "rink" was warped from too much attic heat and cold and damp.

Maybe just vacuum the air thingy, like you do with refrigerator coils?

Dedtired, Good tip about the vacuuming. I'm wondering about the Florida heat-it's going to sit out on the lanai.

Beau got to open it at the Family Christmas Eve Party tonight. I had his 8 year old twin cousins--whom he adores-- planted for the unveiling. They showed appropriated excitement for Beau's benefit and jumped in on que to play a demonstration game.

Ha Ha Shaun. It's amazing how tolerant I am when it's Beau who is making the noise! That's reassuring since our weather is the same. I did some googling today and found many options for covers.
