Advice neded as to helping someone clean up their PC.

In what order would you suggest doing a clean up?

go to TrendMicro? Get CCleaner and run it? Then add which of these: AVG, Spybot, AdAware,SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyWare.

Or start with DiskClean?

She has a Dell with XP and may already have some of these.

If they have no antivirus protection on the pc the first thing to do is get that set up and installed but do not run a scan yet. I prefer Avast free over AVG but if you choose to do AVG I would go with the light install without the add on stuff.

I would do disc clean and or cccleaner(not registry cleaning) first so you get rid of any unnecessary files, then get and install superantispyware free, install, update run full scan let it clean what it finds.
go on line to this site and let it run a scan.
Get a FREE Online Virus Scan

get and install spywareblaster, update and enable all protection.
I would not get ADAware or spybot. Instead I would get malwarebytes. Scans should be run weekly with superantispware and malwarebytes.
Once all that is done they can set the AV to do a scan when the pc is not active.
If they get Avast on the download page on the left is the pdf manual for install and user info follow those instructions including how to register it.

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

avast! 4 Home Edition - FREE antivirus

make sure they have an active firewall or else turn on the windows firewall. And are current with windows critical updates.

After all is cleaned I would do a defrag.

Note if they have an AV program on the pc of course it must be fully removed before another program can be installed and run.

Then go into your add/remove programs list, check to make sure make sure your Java is current we can help with that. Remove programs your no longer using. Double check the recycle bin and empty it if needed.

After you are all done and you have rebooted several times you would want to see how many programs are running on the pc we can also help with that when you get to that point.

I had a heavily brambled area that was supposed to be a right-of-way. I tipped the hand mower up to a 90 degree angle and went for it. Grass established, the area also flourished with wild strawberries, devil's paintbrushes and a lot of other wild flowers. It was a lot more difficult than it sounds and worked out nicely. Most projects are not that straight forward though. What I see a lot of people do is start at the edges of the property and work their way out. I love woodland gardening! Depending upon the situation, you can probably cut a balance between... maintenance, progress, urgent issues and final goals. For maintenance, a lot of people have it somewhat clear around the house. I would be sure that this part of the property is set and work my way out. Progress is starting from maintenance and working your way out. Where I garden, I only have a small patch of woods. My brother has a much larger patch. It is really interesting being right with the plants if you are not too much in a hurry to get everything cleared. I have lots of plants that come back every year that are really wonderful. I can give a whole tour any time of the growing year to point out interesting plants. The children love to hear about pokeberry and how the pokeberry ink was used to write the constitution. The thing is, all different kinds of plants will become obvious during the year. Trilliums (my brother has these) are so lovely! They can get completely lost in a rushed clearing. I start at the edges and remove trees, brush and brambles that are invasive, diseased or crowded out to unhealthy have some of the nicer specimens flourish. Sometimes even a broken dying stump as artistic value. I have gone to garden areas where they have done wonderful things and photographed the stumps! While clearing, I am watching for those lovely surprises by my feet. Trilliums, wild lily of the valley, star flowers really make the place a special home! Urgent issues may come up from time to time. My brother has some wetlands, and wetter property in his woods. He did find it necessary to go on a project to clear out some trees and concentrate on important issues. He had to remove a lot of the Virginia creeper that was choking some house stomping sized trees. This year that is his largest concentration. Final goals can be considered at every point of the project. Even while working on urgent issues, if you have discovered some native or desirable plants, you can probably stick a few in the ground so they can be populating. While clearing, you can be making the path, if you are thinking about a certain route through the woods. I grew up where there were several paths crossing paths through the woods to get to special places. I could branch off towards different springs, to the abandoned quarry or go directly to the pond or visit a friend. Gardening is an ongoing project. I would keep it to enjoyable levels. A couple years from now you will sit back and enjoy your artistic endeavor and think about how you would never arrive.

how was this so called "optimization" done? did you use a registry cleaner product or did someone do this at a shop? If the registry was messed with it could be bad news. There is no real reason to do registry cleaning on the versions of windows from xp forward and doing so by someone that is not very very versed with the registry can lead to serious problems. I never advise the use of any registry cleaners and if you do by all means back up that registry big time before doing so. Let us know exactly what was done I see it is vista

Red lover, I've linked to my original question and some information about my albatros...um, inherited house :). Kswl, we didn't and probably won't wear masks although we did and will wear our rubber gloves. The nicotine isn't oozing into the air as far as I can tell, and of course now that my friend is gone there isn't any more smoking going on in there :). I have had a very similar incident occurred to when I was renting. Although a little different, I did benefit from the fact that the rental company was non compliant, so thought I should share. We had a fire breakout in the kitchen in the middle of the night(3am). Although, we woke up in time to move out and call the fire Dept; we lost a bunch of stuff in the kitchen. The rental company, was very uptight on the whole situation and blamed us for everything - although we had reported an issue with one of the electrical burners that would work one day, and not the other(they did nothing for me than 2 weeks). Long story short, when I brought my lawyer friend into the equation; they noticed that there we no fire/smoke alarms installed in the bedroom and many of the ones in the building were non functional. That seriously changed the whole ball game, and we were offered compensation for the stuff we lost in the fire, a week's hotel and food bill and best of all the building manger's arrogance was nowhere to be seen for the next year or so we lived there.

Without question one step was missed here. After cleaning up the H/D with whatever applications you choose and what order you choose, and before doing a Defragmentation, you should do an Error Checking of the H/D.

To complete this task My Computer>right click on the C:/ drive>Properties>Tool Tab> Error-Checking Check Now> select both appearing options>Start. When a window appears and presents a message regarding Startup allow the action.

This task will take a while so don't plan to sit and watch it. Just reboot the computer. Don't be startled as the task acts in a DOS-like screen and has 5 steps. When it is done it will continue booting automatically.

That should keep her busy for a while!

I'll pass this on and wait to see how far she gets with it. Sure it will take a while.

In fact there are others here who might want to keep the info for their own use.

May I ask a question? Why do you suggest downloading AVG or Avast, but doing the online scan at eset.com? A friend asked me to help her install an AV program, etc and I plan to follow your "map" above. Can I just install AVG and do a scan after removing her old subscription AV program? Thanks for your help.

it is always best to do an online scan on any pc because if you happen to have had a type of infection that took control of aspects of your AV program which was on the pc it could have caused that AV program to be disabled or crippled. So doing a scan with a program that is NOT on the pc is a good check up on your actual installed AV. So anytime you are changing from one to another and want to make sure you are starting clean do an online scan, then once they have the new AV set up to their liking then run that scan also.

If the program is not run from on the pc then nothing on the pc can control it.

Curious why you do a error checking? I have never done that and never even heard of it.
