Advice neded as to helping someone clean up their PC.

In what order would you suggest doing a clean up?

go to TrendMicro? Get CCleaner and run it? Then add which of these: AVG, Spybot, AdAware,SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyWare.

Or start with DiskClean?

She has a Dell with XP and may already have some of these.

If they have no antivirus protection on the pc the first thing to do is get that set up and installed but do not run a scan yet. I prefer Avast free over AVG but if you choose to do AVG I would go with the light install without the add on stuff.

I would do disc clean and or cccleaner(not registry cleaning) first so you get rid of any unnecessary files, then get and install superantispyware free, install, update run full scan let it clean what it finds.
go on line to this site and let it run a scan.
Get a FREE Online Virus Scan

get and install spywareblaster, update and enable all protection.
I would not get ADAware or spybot. Instead I would get malwarebytes. Scans should be run weekly with superantispware and malwarebytes.
Once all that is done they can set the AV to do a scan when the pc is not active.
If they get Avast on the download page on the left is the pdf manual for install and user info follow those instructions including how to register it.

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

avast! 4 Home Edition - FREE antivirus

make sure they have an active firewall or else turn on the windows firewall. And are current with windows critical updates.

After all is cleaned I would do a defrag.

Note if they have an AV program on the pc of course it must be fully removed before another program can be installed and run.

Then go into your add/remove programs list, check to make sure make sure your Java is current we can help with that. Remove programs your no longer using. Double check the recycle bin and empty it if needed.

After you are all done and you have rebooted several times you would want to see how many programs are running on the pc we can also help with that when you get to that point.

Red lover, I've linked to my original question and some information about my albatros...um, inherited house :). Kswl, we didn't and probably won't wear masks although we did and will wear our rubber gloves. The nicotine isn't oozing into the air as far as I can tell, and of course now that my friend is gone there isn't any more smoking going on in there :). Sorry about not replying sooner! I had some trouble yesterday with certain children letting me on the computer long enough to answer emails and peek at the KT but that's it. Inconsiderate babies who don't nap properly! LOL ;) Anyway, thanks for all of the congratulations and good wishes. It is so exciting to know that we only have one more week here! Yippee! Now for the advice...motor home rental-too pricey...tenting it-this is early spring in Saskatchewan. We would freeze. There is no land because every lot is sold. Every lot. In the whole town. The "weekend" homes are an hour away and more expensive than a house in town would be. There is nothing to rent right at this moment and when stuff comes up it's snatched up in no time. I think there are people who troll the streets waiting for a rental to come up, LOL. I want Annie to go to the school in town so we have to live there. Also, Claire's preschool is there. All three Realtors know us personally and have all of our numbers and strict instructions to call if anything becomes available. And I so appreciate them for doing that. Gosh Patti, I wish you were close too! I would love for someone to play with the kids while I just laid on the couch and read a book for an hour. That would be SWEET! LOL Having time to house-hunt isn't a problem, it's the lack of options out there. :( I'm so sorry for your crummy experience Donna! We found out today that renting at the hotel is out of the question because it would be $2200/month at one and $1700/month at the other. *sigh* I don't even know if the campground is running at this time of year. We don't own a trailer and our car is too small to sleep in. :D I'm trying to see this as an adventure, and I was starting to think that staying at a hotel would be fun because I wouldn't have to clean, but darn. :) There is no one who can take our cats as our friends are either saddled with cats of their own or they are highly allergic. The hotels in town are not part of a chain, they are privately owned and thus why they can charge a goofy rate. Anyway, I appreciate every single person who responded to my thread. Mid Century Makeover Advice Neded - HELP

I think you have to work out which part of "Mid-Century" you're leaning toward. If it's early-Mid-Century ( for example, the fifties) then I think the stained woodwork would be less desirable than painted. If it's late Mid-Century and you're going for a 70s vibe them I think stained woodwork was more common. Speaking as someone who lived through the 70s as a young women just setting up my first independent household,, I am always taken aback by the idea that that period is MCM. In my childhood -the true heyday of MCM - painted trim was the norm, often panted to same color as the walls. (And the trim was minimal.) But by the 70s, a backlash had formed and people started using stained woodwork, part of the back to "natural" movement. It was often ugly then, and it hasn't improved with age, I'm afraid. Way back in the day (pre-MCM) in the 20s and 30s stained trim was made from beautiful woods (not necessarily luxury woods, like mahogany, just beautiful pine and fir), usually with carefully chosen proportions. But in the 70's, stingy-width, ordinary ranch-style trim pieces were given a few quick coats of poly-stain and paired with highly contrasting wall colors. (Think kitchens with white slab doors and bars of contrasting wood trim along the top to serve as pulls and formica counters edged with stained wood. Hang a spider plant with macrame, and you're done.) The thing is that this was the outer reaches of MCM, after the style had been wrung dry and was already on life support. The stained woodwork phase was the last attempt to revivify it. It only needed Nancy Reagan to smother it all under glitzy red and teal chintz by the yard. Now, an Eames chair, egg chair, Paul McCobb, etc., those were the true MCM of the 50s-edging into the 60s. But by time the 70s rolled around it was different. I know I disdained my Mother's Paul McCobb dining room furniture then, though I was mad for Dansk, Marimeko and other Scandinavian stuff. (The McCobb stuff grew on me, so that when I eventually inherited I didn't send it off to Goodwill.) If you're going for any retro look, it really helps if you can train your eye to see what the style points truly were for the portion of the MCM period that appeals to you. You can lose your focus if you're thinking that MCM encompasses the whole period from after the War through to Nancy R. There were distinct , evolutionary stages along the way through. True 50s/60s-era MCM is a very attractive look, IMO. Things like the Eames and McCobb furniture will continue to stand up as excellent, enduring designs. I think those things will eventually be as sought after as period Georgian or Craftsman stuff is today. But when I think back to some of the 70s furniture (and I have to really think hard to even get pictures of it in my mind) the picture is not so clear. In reviewing your comment I see you mention reading that MCM lets the wood lines of the furniture show, but wonderng if that extends to the trim. I'd say, yes the wood lines of the furniture should show, but the trim not so much. And I think that keeping the trim painted allows the wood of the furniture to be more prominent. The walls (including trim) were the background for the wonderful lines of the stuff in the rooms. HTH L.

I have had a very similar incident occurred to when I was renting. Although a little different, I did benefit from the fact that the rental company was non compliant, so thought I should share. We had a fire breakout in the kitchen in the middle of the night(3am). Although, we woke up in time to move out and call the fire Dept; we lost a bunch of stuff in the kitchen. The rental company, was very uptight on the whole situation and blamed us for everything - although we had reported an issue with one of the electrical burners that would work one day, and not the other(they did nothing for me than 2 weeks). Long story short, when I brought my lawyer friend into the equation; they noticed that there we no fire/smoke alarms installed in the bedroom and many of the ones in the building were non functional. That seriously changed the whole ball game, and we were offered compensation for the stuff we lost in the fire, a week's hotel and food bill and best of all the building manger's arrogance was nowhere to be seen for the next year or so we lived there.

Without question one step was missed here. After cleaning up the H/D with whatever applications you choose and what order you choose, and before doing a Defragmentation, you should do an Error Checking of the H/D.

To complete this task My Computer>right click on the C:/ drive>Properties>Tool Tab> Error-Checking Check Now> select both appearing options>Start. When a window appears and presents a message regarding Startup allow the action.

This task will take a while so don't plan to sit and watch it. Just reboot the computer. Don't be startled as the task acts in a DOS-like screen and has 5 steps. When it is done it will continue booting automatically.

That should keep her busy for a while!

I'll pass this on and wait to see how far she gets with it. Sure it will take a while.

In fact there are others here who might want to keep the info for their own use.

May I ask a question? Why do you suggest downloading AVG or Avast, but doing the online scan at eset.com? A friend asked me to help her install an AV program, etc and I plan to follow your "map" above. Can I just install AVG and do a scan after removing her old subscription AV program? Thanks for your help.

it is always best to do an online scan on any pc because if you happen to have had a type of infection that took control of aspects of your AV program which was on the pc it could have caused that AV program to be disabled or crippled. So doing a scan with a program that is NOT on the pc is a good check up on your actual installed AV. So anytime you are changing from one to another and want to make sure you are starting clean do an online scan, then once they have the new AV set up to their liking then run that scan also.

If the program is not run from on the pc then nothing on the pc can control it.

Curious why you do a error checking? I have never done that and never even heard of it.
